Our patient was a 58-year-old man who was diagnosed with a large bowel obstruction caused by ascending colon cancer, together with multiple liver metastases for which a right hemicolectomy was performed. After the operation, he developed disseminated intravascular coagulation(DIC)and severe anemia. Bone marrow biopsy findings led to a diagnosis of disseminated carcinomatosis of the bone marrow caused by colon cancer.

The patient was a 54-year-old woman who developed a right adrenal tumour, Cushingoid features, elevated levels of cortisol that were not suppressed by 1 nor 8 mg of dexamethasone, and suppression of adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) during treatment for severe hypertension. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a right adrenal tumour and an atrophic left adrenal gland. In addition, elevated plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) and suppressed plasma renin activity (PRA) with an aldosterone-to-renin ratio of 128 (ng per 100 ml per ng ml⁻¹ h⁻¹) suggested aldosterone excess.

Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare, highly malignant tumor. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the prognostic relevance of a proliferation marker Ki67/MIB1 by immunohistochemistry in 17 cases who underwent resections of the primary tumors and diagnosed to have ACC at Tohoku University Hospital based on the criteria of Weiss during the period from 1976 to 2005. The follow-up periods ranged from 221 days to 10659 days (about 29 years) with the median of 1895 days.

Urotensin II (UII), first identified from goby urophysis, is a potent vasoactive peptide hormone and an endogenous ligand for an orphan G protein-coupled receptor GPR14, now named urotensin II receptor (UT-R). Orexin-A (hypocretin-1), a neuropeptide with stimulatory actions on arousal and appetite, was originally shown to be specifically expressed in the hypothalamus. We studied expression of orexin-A and orexin receptors in the kidney and the presence of orexin-A-like immunoreactivity in human urine. Immunocytochemistry showed that orexin-A-like immunoreactivity and two types of orexin receptors (types 1 and 2) were localized in the tubules of the human kidney obtained at autopsy.

We have recently shown that retinal pigment epithelial cells secrete endothelin-1 (ET-1). In the present study, we studied effects of cytokines and dexamethasone on expression of ET-1 in two types of cultured human retinal pigment epithelial cells, ARPE- 19 cells and D407 cells. Treatment for 24 hours with a combination of three cytokines, interferon-gamma, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-1beta, induced expression of ET-1 in both cells.

Urotensin II (UII) is the most potent vasoconstrictor peptide ever identified.
