Diversion of the initial blood flow is conducted for all donations, and additionally, blood remaining in apheresis machine circuit is lost. Here, we aimed to investigate on the health impact of frequent apheresis donations, as measured by the serum ferritin (sFer).

The cornea is densely innervated with sensory nerve fibers that are not only responsible for sensation but also required for physiological processes such as tear secretion and wound healing. Loss or dysfunction of corneal nerves thus impairs corneal epithelial wound healing and can lead to neurotrophic keratopathy.

Here, we applied high-throughput sequencing of ribosomal RNA gene amplicons to investigate soil biota in two fields of central Japan with different histories of maize-cabbage rotation. We identified 3086 eukaryotic and 17,069 prokaryotic sequence variants (SVs) from soil samples from two fields rotating two crops at three different growth stages.

Microscopic feature of lymph node anthracosilicosis adherent with pulmonary artery: a case report.

Background: Although thoracic surgeons occasionally encounter dense adhesions of interlobar lymph node anthracosilicosis with the pulmonary artery, adhesiolysis may be challenging. Besides, characteristic microscopic features of the adherent lesion remain limited.

Case Presentation: During a thoracoscopic right upper lobectomy of a patient with stage IA3 primary lung adenocarcinoma, several interlobar lymph nodes adhered to the posterior ascending branch of the pulmonary artery to the right upper lobe were noted.

SARS-CoV-2 has gradually acquired amino acid substitutions in its S protein that reduce the potency of neutralizing antibodies, leading to decreased vaccine efficacy. Here, we attempted to obtain mutant viruses by passaging SARS-CoV-2 in the presence of plasma samples from convalescent patients or vaccinees to determine which amino acid substitutions affect the antigenicity of SARS-CoV-2. Several amino acid substitutions in the S2 region, as well as the N-terminal domain (NTD) and receptor-binding domain (RBD), affected the neutralization potency of plasma samples collected from vaccinees, indicating that amino acid substitutions in the S2 region as well as those in the NTD and RBD affect neutralization by vaccine-induced antibodies.

Urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) is a serine protease that plays a central role in the pericellular fibrinolytic system, mediates the degradation of extracellular matrix proteins and activation of growth factors, and contributes to the regulation of various cellular processes including cell migration and adhesion, chemotaxis, and angiogenesis. The corneal epithelium responds rapidly to injury by initiating a wound healing process that involves cell migration, cell proliferation, and tissue remodeling. It is innervated by sensory nerve endings that play an important role in the maintenance of corneal epithelial homeostasis and in the wound healing response.

Postoperative changes in a bronchial stump following covering with free fat tissue in a rat model.

Objectives: Covering the bronchial stump with free fat tissue has been used as minimally invasive prophylaxis against bronchial stump fistulas; however, postoperative changes in the bronchial stump have not been well validated. Our goal was to examine changes in the bronchial stump in response to covering with free fat tissue in a rat model.

Methods: A left pneumonectomy was performed on 16 Wistar/ST rats, 12 of which had a bronchial stump covered with free subcutaneous fat tissue.

Aim: Primary hepatic angiosarcoma (PHA) is extremely rare, and its imaging findings are similar to those of other liver tumors including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Here, we report a case of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related HCC followed by PHA that showed remarkable clinical response to atezolizumab plus bevacizumab (Atezo/Bev) therapy.

Defining the ontogeny of tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) is important to develop therapeutic targets for mesothelioma. We identified two distinct macrophage populations in mouse peritoneal and pleural cavities, the monocyte-derived, small peritoneal/pleural macrophages (SPM), and the tissue-resident large peritoneal/pleural macrophages (LPM). SPM rapidly increased in tumor microenvironment after tumor challenge and contributed to the vast majority of M2-like TAM.

Real-world efficacy and safety of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir in Japanese adolescents with chronic hepatitis C: a prospective multicenter study.
