Enhanced detection of glycoproteins in polyacrylamide gels.

A highly sensitive and simple method to enhance detection of glycoproteins resolved by either one- or two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis is described. The method is a modification of the procedure described by D. Fargeaud et al.

Cutaneous paragonimiasis in man in Honduras.

A worm found in histopathologic sections of the skin of a 31-year-old man in Honduras was identified as Paragonimus sp. The worm was immature, and specific identification was not possible. This is the second human case of paragonimiasis in Honduras.

Reduced vascular trauma after temporary occlusion with modified Biemer and Yasargil clips.

The Biemer and Yasargil microvascular clips that are currently available commercially can traumatize the vascular endothelium. In an effort to resolve this problem, both clip designs were structurally modified by changing the length, width, and surface of the clip blades in various ways. Also, the occlusion force of the clips was set at either 15 or 30 g.

Influence of dietary protein restriction on ovulation, fertilization rates and pre-implantation embryonic development in mice.

Eggs were recovered from 153 adult female mice fed either a normal (27% protein) or a protein-deficient (8% protein) diet from day 15 (Group I) or 30 (Group II) before mating until sacrifice. The females were mated with fertile males and sacrificed 48, 72, 96 or 120 hours after observation of vaginal plugs. The study was performed with females that ovulated spontaneously and with females induced to ovulate by injection of pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin and human chorionic gonadotrophin.

Effect of a long-acting contraceptive progestogen on lactation.

A prospective study was made on the duration of lactation in 406 mothers injected postpartum for contraception with medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), 150 or 250-300 mg, IM, at 3- or 6-month intervals. Breast feedings up to 2 per day were recorded, and findings compared with those from 173 nontreated controls. Eighty percent of the DMPA group were nursing successfully at the sixth month and 42% at the 12th month postpartum.

[Concept of behavior in phobic symptoms].

Phobic symptoms are discussed from behavioral viewpoint. A symptom is considered phobic when avoidance mechanism coming from anxiety is underlying it. Fear and anxiety are similar reactions, although some clinical difference is pointed out between them.
