Methane-oxidizing bacterial community dynamics in sub-alpine forest soil.

Unlabelled: Microbial activities in sub-alpine forest soil influence global cycling of the potent greenhouse gas methane. Understanding the dynamics of methane-oxidizing bacterial communities, particularly the roles of potentially active versus total microbial populations, is necessary for reducing uncertainty in global methane budget estimates. However, our understanding of the factors influencing methane cycling in forest soils is limited by our lack of knowledge about the biology of the microbes involved and how these communities are shaped by their environment.

Tolerance, adherence, and acceptability of a ketogenic 2.5:1 ratio, nutritionally complete, medium chain triglyceride-containing liquid feed in children and adults with drug-resistant epilepsy following a ketogenic diet.

Objective: To investigate incorporating a ready-to-use 2.5:1 ratio liquid feed into a ketogenic diet (KD) in children and adults with drug-resistant epilepsy.

Methods: Following a three-day baseline, patients (n = 19; age: 19 years [SD 13], range: 8-46 years) followed a KD for 28 days (control period), then incorporated ≥200 mL/day of a ready-to-use liquid feed, made with a ratio of 2.

Dissatisfaction With Total Knee Arthroplasty at 1 Year Post Surgery Can be Predicted Using a Short Questionnaire Early in the Recovery Process.

Background: Approximately 20% of patients are dissatisfied with their total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Identifying patients likely to be dissatisfied early in the recovery process could help reduce the number of dissatisfied patients. The purpose of this study was to create an easily administered short questionnaire to identify patients likely to be dissatisfied at 1 year post surgery early in the recovery process.

Comparing the prevalence of nomophobia and smartphone addiction among university students pre-COVID-19 and during COVID-19.

Background: This study aimed to: (a) explore differences in the prevalence of nomophobia and smartphone addiction (SA) from pre- to during COVID-19; (b) identify students' self-reported changes in smartphone reliance and screen time during COVID-19; and (c) examine whether self-perceived changes in smartphone usage predicted nomophobia and SA scores.

Methods: Scores on the Nomophobia Questionnaire and Smartphone Addiction Scale between two surveys administered at two timepoints were compared: Sample 1 (September 2019-January 2020;  = 878) and Sample 2 (May-June 2020;  = 258).

Results: No significant differences were found between samples on nomophobia or SA.

International Recommendations for the Management of Adults Treated With Ketogenic Diet Therapies.

Objective: To evaluate current clinical practices and evidence-based literature to establish preliminary recommendations for the management of adults using ketogenic diet therapies (KDTs).

Methods: A 12-topic survey was distributed to international experts on KDTs in adults consisting of neurologists and dietitians at medical institutions providing KDTs to adults with epilepsy and other neurologic disorders. Panel survey responses were tabulated by the authors to determine the common and disparate practices between institutions and to compare these practices in adults with KDT recommendations in children and the medical literature.

Exercise behaviors and resource use among graduate students at a Canadian university: A cross-sectional study.

Objective: Participation in regular exercise among post-secondary students is often low. Our cross-sectional study aimed to assess exercise levels, perceived barriers/motivators to exercise, and knowledge and use of exercise resources in graduate students.

Participants: We recruited graduate students across various disciplines at a large Canadian university.

Logistic Regression and Machine Learning Models Cannot Discriminate Between Satisfied and Dissatisfied Total Knee Arthroplasty Patients.

Background: Approximately 20% of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients are found to be dissatisfied or unsure of their satisfaction at 1-year post-surgery. This study attempted to predict 1-year post-surgery dissatisfied/unsure TKA patients with pre-surgery and surgical variables using logistic regression and machine learning methods.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of patients who underwent primary TKA for osteoarthritis between 2012 and 2016 at a single institution was completed.

Quantifying groundwater flow variability in a poorly cemented fractured sandstone aquifer to inform in situ remediation.

This study applies innovative methods to characterize and quantify the magnitude of groundwater flow in a fractured and variably cemented sandstone aquifer to inform an in-situ remediation strategy for trichloroethene (TCE) contamination. A modified active-distributed temperature sensing (A-DTS) approach in which fiber optic cables were permanently grouted in the borehole was used to quantify groundwater flow rates. Two additional tracer tests were conducted: 1) fluorescein tracer injection followed by rock coring and sampling for visual mapping and porewater analysis, and 2) deployment of passive flux meters in conventional monitoring wells to evaluate groundwater velocity and mass flux distributions.

Effectiveness and safety of repeated percutaneous intervention in an office-based endovascular center in maintaining hemodialysis access.

Objectives: Percutaneous dialysis access interventions are routinely used to maintain the patency of dialysis access despite the lack of data regarding their long-term effectiveness. This retrospective study was undertaken to study the effectiveness and safety of percutaneous dialysis access interventions in arm fistulas and bridge grafts in an office-based endovascular center.

Methods: Patients who had a percutaneous dialysis access intervention in their upper extremity access site, performed at a single office-based endovascular center over a nine-year period (2007-2016) were included in this study.

About a Third of Nursing Home Social Services Directors Have Earned a Social Work Degree and License.

Nursing home (NH) residents have high psychosocial needs related to illness, disability, and changing life circumstances. The staff member with the most expertise in addressing psychosocial needs is the social worker. However, federal regulations indicate that only NHs with 120+ beds need hire a social services staff member and that a "qualified social worker" need not have a social work degree.

Background: Approximately 20% of patients are dissatisfied with their total knee arthroplasty (TKA) at 1-year post-surgery. Met expectations have been found by some to significantly predict satisfaction. The role of met expectations in determining patient satisfaction has not been exhaustively explored.

Transition of care for pediatric and adult patients with venous thromboembolism: A National Quality Improvement Project from the American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network (ATHN).

Background: Transition of care (TOC) for management of anticoagulation from inpatient to outpatient setting for patients with acute venous thromboembolism (VTE) poses serious safety concerns. We implemented a national quality improvement educational initiative to address this issue.

Methods: Pediatric and adult patients admitted for their first VTE were prospectively enrolled at 16 centers from January 2016 to December 2018.

Response orientation modulates pitch-space relationships: the ROMPR effect.

Congruency between auditory and visuospatial stimuli has been previously shown to affect responses to multisensory stimulus pairs, and congruency between stimuli and response devices may play a role in response speed and accuracy. Across two experiments, we tested whether the accuracy and speed of pitch judgments were affected by a congruent or incongruent paired visual stimulus, and whether the relationship was modulated by response orientation. In Experiment 1, participants using a vertically (transversely) oriented keyboard demonstrated a large crossmodal vertical effect, but a minimal crossmodal horizontal effect.

Improving the translation of search strategies using the Polyglot Search Translator: a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Searching for studies to include in a systematic review (SR) is a time- and labor-intensive process with searches of multiple databases recommended. To reduce the time spent translating search strings across databases, a tool called the Polyglot Search Translator (PST) was developed. The authors evaluated whether using the PST as a search translation aid reduces the time required to translate search strings without increasing errors.

Improving Inferior Vena Cava Filter Retrieval and Success Rates Using an Office Endovascular Center.

Background: The Food and Drug Administration recommends that retrievable inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) be removed 29-54 days postinsertion. Nationally, the retrieval rate is around 23-25%. The objectives of this study are to assess the effect of a plan for IVCF retrieval and access to an office endovascular center (OEC) on filter removal rates and to assess the safety of the procedure in an OEC.

Interrelationship between depression, anxiety, pain, and treatment adherence in hemophilia: results from a US cross-sectional survey.

Purpose: Depression, anxiety, pain, and treatment adherence have reciprocal effects not characterized extensively in hemophilia. This study explored the relationships between depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and treatment adherence in adults with hemophilia.

Patients And Methods: Adults with self-reported hemophilia A or B completed the cross-sectional IMPACT QoL II survey.

Outcomes of atherectomy for lower extremity ischemia in an office endovascular center.

Objective: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of infrainguinal artery revascularization via atherectomy supplemented with other endovascular techniques in an office endovascular center (OEC) setting.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted examining 352 lower extremity atherectomy revascularization procedures between 2011 and 2016 at an OEC by five board-certified vascular surgeons. Patients received laser atherectomy or orbital atherectomy followed by angioplasty or angioplasty and stent placement as needed.

Photon-to-matter chirality transfer offers both simplicity and universality to chiral synthesis, but its efficiency is typically low for organic compounds. Besides the fundamental importance of this process relevant for understanding the origin of homochirality on Earth, new pathways for imposing chiral bias during chemical process are essential for a variety of technologies from medicine to informatics. The strong optical activity of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) affords photosynthetic routes to chiral superstructures using circularly polarized photons.

Analysis of the retrograde tibial artery approach in lower extremity revascularization in an office endovascular center.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a retrograde tibial approach in revascularization of lower extremities for treatment of ischemia in anatomically challenging patients.

Methods: This is a retrospective study of 57 procedures performed between 2012 and 2016 using the retrograde approach to treat patients with flush occlusion, inability to cross the lesion, failed bypass, or hostile groin. Demographic data, Rutherford classes, vessels treated, and approach were noted.

Education needs of nurses in thrombosis and hemostasis: An international, mixed-methods study.

Background: The need for a more integrated, multidisciplinary approach to care for individuals with bleeding or clotting disorders has been highlighted in recent years. Evidence-based education adapted to nurses' needs is essential for a successful evolution. However, limited data currently exist on the clinical challenges nurses face in this specialty area.

Limb Salvage Versus Amputation in Conventional Appendicular Osteosarcoma: a Systematic Review.

The overall survivorship in patients with appendicular osteosarcoma has increased in the past few decades. However, controversies and questions about performing an amputation or a limb salvage procedure still remain. Using three peer-reviewed library databases, a systematic review of the literature was performed to evaluate all studies that have evaluated the outcomes of appendicular osteosarcoma, either with limb salvage or amputation.
