Elderly women are more susceptible to the development of chronic non-communicable diseases. Among these, diabetes mellitus (DM) and systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) stand out. This work aimed to carry out an expanded study on the interactions of anthropometric, biochemical and inflammatory parameters associated with the risk of severity in elderly women with hypertension and diabetes.

Introduction: Multicenter studies involving patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) associated with the disease caused by the new coronavirus (COVID-19) and treated with renal replacement therapy (RRT) in developing countries are scarce. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the demographic profile, clinical picture, risk factors for mortality, and outcomes of critically ill patients with AKI requiring dialysis (AKI-RRT) and with COVID-19 in the megalopolis of São Paulo, Brazil.

Methods: This multicenter, retrospective, observational study was conducted in the intensive care units of 13 public and private hospitals in the metropolitan region of the municipality of São Paulo.

In this paper, we report the outcomes of our investigation on the intradermal application of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) with curcumin in an infection induced by MRSA ATCC 43300 strain in the ear of mice with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM). A solution containing 100 μg of curcumin was photoactivated ex vivo with a LED light (450 nm) delivering a fluency of 13.

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of physical activity in inflammatory, biochemical and endocrine parameters of middle-aged and elderly men with Systemic Arterial Hypertension (SAH) and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). The assessment was comprised by 77 male volunteers aged between 45 and 59 years old (middle-aged men) or 60 to 86 years old (elderly men), diagnosed with SAH and T2DM, assisted by Family Health Units in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil. According to age and lifestyle (sedentary or practicing physical activity), these men were classified as middle-aged sedentary men, middle-aged physically active men, elderly sedentary men, or elderly physically active men.

Deep Brain Stimulation of the Nucleus Accumbens, Ventral Striatum, or Internal Capsule Targets for Medication-Resistant Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Multicenter Study.

Background: Deep brain stimulation of the nucleus accumbens, ventral striatum, or internal capsule region has shown a 45%-60% response rate in adults with severe treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder, regardless of which target is used. We sought to improve the effectiveness of deep brain stimulation by placing the electrode along a trajectory including these 3 targets, enabling a change of stimulation site depending on the patient's response.

Methods: This study used the medical records of 14 patients from 4 different Spanish institutions: 7 from the Hospital Universitario La Princesa, 3 from the Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias, 2 from Hospital Universitario Fundación Jiménez Díaz, and 2 from Hospital Universitari Son Espases.
