A 3-yr randomized, controlled prospective study evaluated the clinical effectiveness of a mild two-step self-etch adhesive, Clearfil SE, in Class-V non-carious lesions. The hypothesis tested was that prior selective etching of enamel with phosphoric acid does not affect the 3-yr clinical performance of this adhesive. A total of 100 lesions in 29 patients were randomly restored in one or two pairs, according to two experimental protocols: (i) application of Clearfil SE according to the instructions of the manufacturer (C-SE non-etch); and (ii) similar application of Clearfil SE with prior etching of enamel cavity margins with phosphoric acid (C-SE etch).

Functional monomers chemically interact with hydroxyapatite that remains within submicron hybrid layers produced by mild self-etch adhesives. The functional monomer 10-MDP interacts most intensively with hydroxyapatite, and its calcium salt appeared most hydrolytically stable, as compared with 4-MET and phenyl-P. We investigated the hypothesis that additional chemical interaction of self-etch adhesives improves bond stability.

Unlabelled: One-step self-etch adhesives are undoubtedly the most user-friendly adhesives, but have been associated with lower bonding effectiveness as compared to two-step and three-step adhesives. Conversion of a one-step self-etch system into a two-step self-etch adhesive by adding a bonding step, or into a three-step etch&rinse adhesive by adding a beforehand etching step and a bonding step might be tempting in order to improve bond strength.

Simultaneous recording of electroencephalogram/functional magnetic resonance images (EEG/fMRI) was applied to identify blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) changes associated with spontaneous variations of the alpha rhythm, which is considered the hallmark of the brain resting state. The analysis was focused on inter-subject variability associated with the resting state. Data from 7 normal subjects are presented.

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of evaporation of primer components on the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of primer-adhesive mixtures.

Methods: The UTSs of 1:3 by weight primer-adhesive mixtures and of the pure adhesives (controls) were measured after 0-, 2-, 5-min and 24-h storage in a 37 degrees C oven for the three-step etch&rinse adhesive OptiBond FL (Kerr) and the two-step self-etch adhesive Clearfil SE (Kuraray).

Results: Evaporation of primer components increased with time for both adhesives investigated.

Resin-dentin bonds are known to degrade in the relatively aggressive oral environment. In order to obtain greater insight into the interfacial degradation process, we examined, by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the interfacial ultrastructure of two adhesives bonded to dentin after 1 yr in vivo. The single Kronecker product (KP) model for the spatiotemporal covariance of MEG residuals is extended to a sum of Kronecker products. This sum of KP is estimated such that it approximates the spatiotemporal sample covariance best in matrix norm. This study investigates the possible relevance of distribution and age variation of spontaneous theta activity (4-8 Hz) in normal subjects using magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings. Spontaneous theta was recorded with a 151-channel MEG in healthy subjects; moreover, in a group of 10 subjects, simultaneous MEG-EEG was recorded in order to compare the two methods. Besides micro-mechanical interlocking through hybrid-layer formation, self-etch adhesives may benefit from additional chemical interaction between the functional monomer and residual hydroxyapatite. One-step adhesives are commonly associated with lower bonding effectiveness, which must be attributed in part to the dissolution of hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomers in a relatively highly concentrated solvent. In this 'difficult' mixture, also water is essential as ionization medium to enable self-etching activity.

Controversy remains regarding the preferred modality, magnetoencephalography (MEG) or EEG, for the presurgical evaluation of patients with epilepsy. In general, it appears that the spike yields for MEG and EEG are similar in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, and that for neocortical epilepsy the MEG spike yields may be larger than for EEG. In general, MEG/EEG spike yields depend on factors such as (1) the number of sensors, (2) the source depth and orientation, (3) the background activity, and (4) the smearing of the potential fields due to variations in skull resistivity in EEG.

Methods: Twenty-nine patients received two or four restorations randomly following two experimental protocols ('paired-tooth' study design): (1) A 'mild' self-etch adhesive (Clearfil SE, Kuraray) was applied following a self-etch approach on both enamel and dentin (C-SE non-etch); (2) Similar application of Clearfil SE, but including beforehand selective acid-etching of the enamel cavity margins with 40% phosphoric acid (C-SE etch). Self-etch adhesives try to solve difficulties commonly associated with the clinical application of etch-and-rinse adhesives. Their application procedure is considered less time-consuming and, more importantly, less technique-sensitive. According to the "elastic bonding" concept, a thick intermediate layer of flexible resin has been suggested to absorb part of the polymerization shrinkage stress and to absorb shocks during function. In this study, the effect of an additional intermediate layer of a low-viscosity resin on the microrotary fatigue resistance (microRFR) of a hybrid composite bonded to dentin was evaluated. The hypotheses tested were that an intermediate layer of a low-viscosity resin (i) increases the microRFR to dentin, but (ii) has no effect on the static bond strength.

Recent investigations suggest that there are differences between the characteristics of EEG and MEG epileptiform spikes. The authors performed an objective characterization of the morphology of epileptiform spikes recorded simultaneously in both EEG and MEG to determine whether they present the same morphologic characteristics. Based on a stepwise approach, the authors performed a computer analysis of EEG and MEG of a set of coincident epileptiform transients selected by a senior clinical neurophysiologist in recordings of three patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.

The standard procedure to determine the brain response from a multitrial evoked magnetoencephalography (MEG) or electroencephalography (EEG) data set is to average the individual trials of these data, time locked to the stimulus onset.
