Article Synopsis
  • Many cancer patients experience malnutrition, which negatively affects their health and survival, yet little regional research exists on its prevalence among hospitalized adults with solid tumors.
  • A cross-sectional study conducted between July 2022 and February 2023 at two major cancer treatment centers assessed the malnutrition risk using specific screening tools and data from 294 participants.
  • The study found a 26.9% prevalence of malnutrition risk, with significant correlations to factors such as age, gender, cancer type, treatment methods, and specific nutritional impact symptoms, highlighting a strong link between these symptoms and the overall risk of malnutrition.

Background: Nutritional impact symptoms (NISs) are proposed to be a key indicator of decreased dietary intake in patients with solid cancer. Cancer patients frequently experience NIS from the disease itself and from disease treatment side effects that impact oral and gastrointestinal health. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association between NIS and dietary intake among cancer patients in the Nablus district, one of the largest districts in Palestine.
