Background: The incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in neurosurgical patients ranges 3-24%. VTE is potentially fatal, and prophylactic anticoagulation is recommended worldwide. However, anticoagulation poses a risk of haemorrhage, which can be devastating.

Negative EBUS-TBNA Predicts Very Low Prevalence of Mediastinal Disease in Staging of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

Background: Confirmation of mediastinal disease (N2/3) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) generally precludes curative surgical management. Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) has become a routine first test in mediastinal staging of NSCLC; however, it remains unclear whether a negative EBUS-TBNA should be followed by mediastinoscopy before proceeding to surgery. Understanding the prevalence of metastases in lymph nodes with benign findings on EBUS-TBNA will inform decision making following negative EBUS-TBNA.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery versus open thoracotomy for pulmonary metastasectomy: a systematic review.

Background: Pulmonary metastasectomy has become a popular procedure for patients with pulmonary metastases. It can be achieved via the traditional open thoracotomy or the more recently developed video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). However, there has been much debate as to which approach is better in terms of detection of pulmonary metastases and, in turn, survival and recurrence outcomes.

Recanalisation success is associated with good clinical outcome despite advanced age and stroke severity in patients treated with the Solitaire stentriever.

Intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator is associated with significant recanalisation failure in the setting of large artery occlusion. Endovascular treatment by stentriever achieves improved rates of recanalisation but its impact on clinical outcomes remains unclear. We hypothesise that successful recanalisation, unattentuated by age and stroke severity, is associated with improved clinical outcomes in patients treated with the Solitaire stentriever (ev3 Endovascular, Plymouth, MN, USA).
