A rare case of miliary tuberculosis accompanying perihepatitis.

Perihepatic capsulitis is associated with various diseases, such as Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, perforated cholecystitis, perforated hepatic abscess, and tuberculous peritonitis. Miliary tuberculosis is present in about 2% of all reported cases of tuberculosis and is characterized by the widespread millet-like hematogenous dissemination of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We describe a 24-year-old virgin patient presenting with right upper quadrant and costovertebral angle pain.

Numerical expression of volume status using the bioimpedance ratio in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients: A pilot study.

Background: Volume overload results in higher mortality rates in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). The ratio of bioimpedance (RBI) might be a helpful parameter in adjusting dry body weight in CAPD patients. This study examined whether it is possible to distinguish between non-hypervolemic status and hypervolemic status in CAPD patients by using only RBI.

Outcomes of living donor kidney transplantation in diabetic patients: age and sex matched comparison with non-diabetic patients.

Background/aims: Kidney transplantation (KT) reportedly provides a significant survival advantage over dialysis in diabetic patients. However, KT outcome in diabetic patients compared with that in non-diabetic patients remains controversial. In addition, owing to recent improvements in the outcomes of KT and management of cardiovascular diseases, it is necessary to analyze outcomes of recently performed KT in diabetic patients.

Association between afebrile status and in-hospital mortality among adult chronic hemodialysis patients with bacteremia.

Aim: We aimed to compare the in-hospital mortality between febrile and afebrile chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients with bacteremia and analyze the blood culture positive rate according to the C-reactive protein (CRP) level.

Methods: We collected data from 2006 to 2014. One hundred ninety bacteremic events were assigned to the "febrile group" (n = 162) and "afebrile group" (n = 28) based on the presence of fever.

Background/aims: Hood cap-assisted chromocolonoscopy using indigocarmine is expected to improve the detection rate of colorectal polyps, especially adenomatous polyps. Introduction: The major components affecting high quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) have been defined as the ability of the rescuer, hand position, position of the rescuer and victim, depth and rate of chest compressions, and fatigue. Until now, there have been no studies on dominant versus non-dominant hand position and the rescuer's side of approach. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of hand position and approach side on the quality of CPR between right-handed (RH) and left-handed (LH) novice rescuers.

A case of oral myiasis caused by Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in Korea.

We report here a case of oral myiasis in the Republic of Korea. The patient was a 37-year-old man with a 30-year history of Becker's muscular dystrophy. He was intubated due to dyspnea 8 days prior to admission to an intensive care unit (ICU).

The Effect of Electrocautery around the Patellar Rim in Patellar Non-Resurfacing Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical effect of electrocautery on the reduction of pain in patellar non-resurfacing bilateral total knee arthroplasty.

Materials And Methods: A total of 50 patients were enrolled into this study; all patients had undergone bilateral patellar non-resurfacing total knee arthoplasty at our hospital, between January 2007 to December 2008. The minimum follow-up period was 1 year.

Calcaneal reconstruction for the late complication of calcaneus fracture.

Calcaneal fracture is the most common fracture in the tarsal bones. Treatment is difficult because the patterns of fracture are various and complications occur frequently. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical results of calcaneal reconstruction for chronic complications after calcaneal fracture.

Early surgical repair of acute complete rupture of the proximal hamstring tendons.

Hamstring injuries are common forms of muscle strains in athletes but a complete rupture of a proximal hamstring origin is rare. [A case of macroscopically unvisualized mucin-hypersecreting biliary papillomatosis diagnosed by microscopy].

The mucin-hypersecreting biliary papillomatosis is a premalignant neoplasm characterized by intraductal papillary proliferation involving extensive areas of the intrahepatic and/or extrahepatic bile duct. We report a case of mucin-hypersecreting biliary papillomatosis manifested as obstructive jaundice and diagnosed only by microscopy, with a review of literatures. A 74-year-old female, who had a past history of cholecystectomy about 13 years ago, was admitted to our hospital with jaundice.

Frequency of Pro475Ser polymorphism of ADAMTS13 gene and its association with ADAMTS-13 activity in the Korean population.

Purpose: The in vitro study suggested that proline to serine polymorphism in codon 475 (C1423T) of the A Disintegrin and Metalloprotease with ThromboSpondin type 1 repeats-13 (ADAMTS-13) gene is related to reduced activity of ADAMTS-13. In this study, the frequency of the Pro475Ser polymorphism in Koreans was studied and plasma ADAMTS-13 activity was measured to find out whether this polymorphism contributes to decreased ADAMTS-13 activity in Koreans.

Patients And Methods: The frequency of the C1423T allele of the ADAMTS13 gene was studied along with measuring plasma ADAMTS-13 activity in 250 healthy Korean individuals.
