Background: Previous studies of Haitian immigrant and refugee youth have emphasized "externalizing" behaviors, such as substance use, high risk sexual behavior, and delinquency, with very little information available on "internalizing" symptoms, such as depression and anxiety. Analyzing stressors and "internalizing" symptoms offers a more balanced picture of the type of social and mental health services that may be needed for this population. In this study we separated weakly acidic phenolic components from other neutral, acidic and basic components of tobacco smoke condensate (TSC) and observed that phenolic fraction of TSC significantly increased the number of colonies of promotion-sensitive JB6 Cl41 cells that showed anchorage-independent growth on soft agar in response to BPDE (an ultimate carcinogen produced by metabolic activation of the PAH benzo[a]pyrene). Anchorage-independent cell growth is indicative of cell transformation resulting in acquisition of tumorigenic potential. In order to understand the underlying mechanism by which TSC phenolic fraction potentiates BPDE-induced tumorigenicity, we examined its effect on the activation of two transcription factors AP-1 and NF-kappaB which are known to be influenced by established tumor promoter TPA.

When performed properly, bilateral inferior petrosal sinus sampling (BIPSS) for adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is rarely associated with complications. Major complications reported to date include thromboembolism, brain stem infarction, pontine haemorrhage, isolated sixth nerve palsy and venous subarachnoid haemorrhage. We describe a rare case where a predominant contrast extravasation into the subarachnoid space, admixed with a small quantity of venous blood, occurring during BIPSS in a 58-year-old woman with ACTH-dependent Cushing's syndrome, was misinterpreted as venous subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Antitoxins for botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) and other toxins are needed that can be produced economically with improved safety and shelf-life properties compared to conventional therapeutics with large-animal antisera. Here we show that protection from BoNT lethality and rapid BoNT clearance through the liver can be elicited in mice by administration of a pool of epitope-tagged small protein binding agents together with a single anti-tag monoclonal antibody (MAb). The protein binding agents used in this study were single-chain Fv domains (scFvs) with high affinity for BoNT serotype A (BoNT/A).

An effort was made to understand the role of the 57 kDa major antigenic fraction of Shigella outer membrane protein (OMP) in the presence of T-cell antigen receptor in activation of adaptive immune responses of the cell mediated immune (CMI) restored patients. The expression of HLA-DR/CD4 out of CD3(+) T-cells was significantly dominant over the HLA-DR/CD8 and comparable to unstimulated cells of infected or healthy controls. CD4(+) T-cell activation together with HLA-DR is associated with the expression of CD25(+) (IL2Ralpha) for IL-2 growth factors with decreased IL-4 levels, required for maintaining the homeostasis of CD4(+) T cell.

A marine actinobacterium isolated from the Bay of Bengal, India and previously found to be producing an antimicrobial and cytotoxic terpenoid was further investigated for antimicrobial metabolites. The bacterium was preliminarily identified as a new species of the genus Streptomyces (strain MS1/7). Tail-anchored (TA) proteins function in key cellular processes in eukaryotic cells, such as vesicle trafficking, protein translocation and regulation of transcription. They anchor to internal cell membranes by a C-terminal transmembrane domain, which also serves as a targeting sequence. Simulations of energetic neutral atom (ENA) maps predict flux magnitudes that are, in some cases, similar to those observed by the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) spacecraft, but they miss the ribbon. Our model of the heliosphere indicates that the local interstellar medium (LISM) magnetic field (B(LISM)) is transverse to the line of sight (LOS) along the ribbon, suggesting that the ribbon may carry its imprint. The force-per-unit area on the heliopause from field line draping and the LISM ram pressure is comparable with the ribbon pressure if the LOS approximately 30 to 60 astronomical units and B(LISM) approximately 2.

Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is increasingly diagnosed in the United States, especially in the Caucasian population. To evaluate the clinical features and outcome of patients with TTC, we evaluated 34 patients (32 women and 2 men) 22 to 88 years of age (mean 66 +/- 14) who fulfilled the following criteria: (1) akinesia or dyskinesia of the apical and/or midventricular segments of the left ventricle with regional wall motion abnormalities that extended beyond the distribution of a single epicardial vessel and (2) absence of obstructive coronary artery disease. Twenty-five patients (74%) presented with chest pain, 20 patients (59%) presented with dyspnea, and 8 patients (24%) presented with cardiogenic shock.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) patients are prone to the development of malignant tumors, the most common being Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor (MPNST). NF1-MPNST patients have an overall poor survival due to systemic metastasis. Mechanisms that regulate early events in the biogenesis of the alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (alpha7 AChR) are not well understood. Data presented here show that single amino acid mutations in the cytoplasmic loop of the alpha7 AChR, between position 335 and 343, abolish or attenuate expression of mature pentameric alpha7 AChRs in both human embryonic kidney tsA201 (HEK) and neuronal SH-SY5Y cells. Although the number of mature alpha7 AChRs is increased significantly in the presence of the chaperone protein resistant to inhibitors of cholineesterase-3 in HEK cells, sucrose gradient sedimentation reveals that the vast majority of alpha7 subunits are aggregated or improperly assembled.

Patient motion is inevitable in SPECT and PET due to the lengthy period of time patients are imaged. The authors hypothesized that the use of external-tracking devices which provide additional information on patient motion independent of SPECT data could be employed to provide a more robust correction than obtainable from data-driven methods. Schwannomas, although benign, can be fatal or give rise to significant morbidity due to an unpredictable growth rate.
