Article Synopsis
  • * Among 5,064 polyps from 2,530 patients, only 0.24% were diagnosed with CRC, and none of the patients died from it.
  • * Key risk factors included an eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) below 60 mL/min/1.73 m² and creatinine levels above 1.0 mg/dL, suggesting more thorough examinations for patients with chronic kidney disease.

Background: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) present growing global health challenges, especially in aging populations, such as Uganda. In Uganda, familial caregiving, predominantly undertaken by female relatives, is the primary form of support provided to patients with ADRD. Cultural stigma around dementia and limited access to support services amplify caregivers' challenges.

Background: Despite the limited evidence, desludging operators remain at a heightened risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). This study established the prevalence and predictors of WMSDs among desludging operators in Uganda.

Methods: A digitalized structured questionnaire was used to collect cross-sectional data on musculoskeletal disorders and routine workplace activities from 303 desludging operators in 11 cities in Uganda.

Background: Stroke is an inflammatory state that causes death and chronic disability. Inflammation and oxidative stress are a predictor of poor clinical outcome, its effects are controversial and has not been evaluated in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of CT head confirmed ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke admitted within 7 days of onset of motor weakness.

Aim: The incidence of Helicobacter pylori-negative gastric cancer (HPNGC) is increasing worldwide. Recently, metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has been reported to be associated with various cancers, but its association with HPNGC has not been reported. We aimed to identify important independent factors associated with HPNGC, including MAFLD.

Background: Greater blood pressure variability has detrimental effects on clinical outcome after a stroke; its effects are controversial and have not been evaluated in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Methods: We conducted a prospective study of patients with CT head confirmed ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes admitted to a tertiary hospital within 7 days of onset of unilateral neurological deficits. Blood pressure variability indices, standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation (CV) of systolic and diastolic blood pressure between day 0 and day 7, were calculated with a subsequent modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score on day 14 post-stroke.

Aim: Metabolic dysfunction is a risk factor for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). We investigated the impact of the recently proposed metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and its subtypes on ESCC recurrence after endoscopic treatment.

Methods: This multicenter observational cohort study enrolled consecutive patients newly diagnosed with ESCC after endoscopic treatment.

: Children from low- and middle-income countries have poor asthma control, mainly because of poor management. The extent of this problem in Uganda is not well known, but such information would be useful to guide policy and practice. We therefore conducted a cross-sectional study among schoolchildren with asthma in urban Uganda, to assess the level of asthma control and management.

Background: The rapid scale-up of HIV therapy across Africa has failed to adequately engage adolescents living with HIV (ALWHIV). Retention and viral suppression for this group (ALWHIV) is 50% lower than for adults. Indeed, on the African continent, HIV remains the single leading cause of mortality among adolescents.

The purpose of this study was to adapt and validate a measure of HIV-related shame, the Shame Questionnaire (SQ), among Ugandan youth living with HIV. Culturally relevant, reliable and valid measurement is critical in the accurate assessment of HIV-related shame () on psychosocial functioning, as well as the determination of the efficacy of interventions among youth living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. Several studies in sub-Saharan Africa have linked social support to better ART (antiretroviral therapy) adherence among adults living with HIV. Less is known about the role of social support and family cohesion in ART adherence among children below 18 years. This paper focuses on HIV-infected adolescents as they transition through the vulnerable developmental stage of adolescence to examine the association between family cohesion and social support, and ART adherence in southern Uganda.

Aim: To determine the usefulness of assigning narrow-band imaging (NBI) scores for predicting tumor grade and invasion depth in colorectal tumors.

Methods: A total of 161 colorectal lesions were analyzed from 138 patients who underwent endoscopic or surgical resection after conventional colonoscopy and magnifying endoscopy with NBI. The relationships between the surface and vascular patterns of the lesions, as visualized with NBI, and the tumor grade and depth of submucosa (SM) invasion were determined histopathologically.

Background: Asset-based economic empowerment interventions, which take an integrated approach to building human, social, and economic capital, have shown promise in their ability to reduce HIV risk for young people, including adolescent girls, in sub-Saharan Africa. Similarly, community and family strengthening interventions have proven beneficial in addressing mental health and behavioral challenges of adolescents transitioning to adulthood. Yet, few programs aimed at addressing sexual risk have applied combination interventions to address economic stability and mental health within the traditional framework of health education and HIV counseling/testing.
