The spectrum of adrenal masses in the pediatric population markedly differs from that in the adult population. Imaging plays a crucial role in detecting adrenal masses, differentiating malignant from benign lesions, recognizing extra-adrenal lesions in the suprarenal fossa, and directing further management. Ultrasound is the primary imaging modality of choice for the evaluation of adrenal masses in the neonatal period, whereas MRI or CT is used as a problem-solving tool.

Effect of Different Crosslinking Strategies on Physical Properties and Biocompatibility of Freestanding Multilayer Films Made of Alginate and Chitosan.

Freestanding multilayer films prepared by layer-by-layer technique have attracted interest as promising materials for wound dressings. The goal is to fabricate freestanding films using chitosan (CHI) and alginate (ALG) including subsequent crosslinking to improve the mechanical properties of films while maintaining their biocompatibility. Three crosslinking strategies are investigated, namely use of calcium ions for crosslinking ALG, 1-ethyl-3-(-3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide combined with N-hydroxysuccinimide for crosslinking ALG with CHI, and Genipin for crosslinking chitosan inside the films.

The lumbar artery perforator (LAP) flap is a relatively new procedure that can be utilized to manage lumbosacral defects in addition to reconstructing distal body parts as well, such as breast reconstruction. This fasciocutaneous flap is designed based on the LAPs small arteries that emerge from the lumbar arteries then move superficially piercing overlying tissues to perforate the lumbar fascia and supply the skin and subcutaneous tissue; However, anatomical and clinical studies regarding the LAP flap and its perforators are sparse in the literature, and the results are even contradicting. Variants of KCNQ4 are one of the most common causes of dominantly inherited nonsyndromic hearing loss. Production of novel chia-mucilage nanocomposite films with starch nanocrystals; An inclusive biological and physicochemical perspective.

In the current study, chia mucilage composite films with starch nanocrystals (3% and 6%) were produced. The films were analyzed physicochemically (FT-IR, AFM, TGA, DSC), mechanically (Tensile strength and contact angle) and biologically (antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxicity) properties. The incorporation of starch nanocrystals was confirmed through FT-IR spectra showing broad OH peak and CO stretching and shift in NH bending vibrations to the lower wave number.

Determining the Enablers and Barriers for the Adoption of Clean Cookstoves in the Middle Belt of Ghana-A Qualitative Study.

Despite its benefits and espousal in developed counties, the adoption of clean cookstoves is reportedly low in less developed countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. This qualitative study aimed at exploring and documenting the enablers and barriers for adoption of clean cookstove in the middle belt of Ghana. The findings showed convenience of clean cookstove use, reduced firewood usage, less smoke emission and associated health problems resulting from indoor air pollution and time for firewood gathering and cooking, good smell and taste of food as enabling factors for clean cookstove adoption.

The varicella zoster virus (VZV) can reactivate later in life as herpes zoster infection (HZI), a severe disease resulting in painful complications such as post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). The herpes zoster (HZ) vaccine has been indicated for use among adults 50 years and older for prevention of HZI. Currently, no clinical practice guideline or funding exists specifically for HZ immunization in long-term care facilities (LTCF) for adults age >60 years.

Background: More than 75% of the population in Ghana relies on biomass fuels for cooking and heating. Household air pollution (HAP) emitted from the incomplete combustion of these fuels has been associated with adverse health effects including respiratory effects in women that can lead to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a major contributor to global HAP-related mortality. HAP is a modifiable risk factor in the global burden of disease, exposure to which can be reduced.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a neurotoxic state manifested with a unique computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearance. PRES is associated with different conditions, such as eclampsia, sepsis, organ transplantation, and drugs, especially immunosuppressive medications. Besides pharmacologic side effects, antibiotics can cause PRES as well.

Comparison of qSOFA and SOFA score for predicting mortality in severe sepsis and septic shock patients in the emergency department of a low middle income country.

Objective: We aimed to determine a comparison between the Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) score and existing Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score when applied to severe sepsis & septic shock patients in the Emergency Department (ED) for prediction of in-hospital mortality in the setting of a tertiary care hospital ED in a low-middle income country.
