The femoral nerve blockage is a procedure that aims to provide anesthesia to the hip, anterior thigh, and stifle. This procedure presents several challenges when performed in veterinary patients with diverse anatomy and physiology. Successful use of this technique will improve a dog's recovery time after surgery in comparison to the commonly used epidural block.

This research was conducted to evaluate a method for determining ovarian volume using ultrasonography; specifically, how the day of the estrous cycle affected ovarian volume, and the application of a formula for adjusted ovarian volume (ADJ VOL) and its relationship to actual ovarian volume. Cows (n = 22) were estrous synchronized and subjected to serial transrectal ultrasonographic evaluations, performed every 48 h from the day prior to ovulation until day 9 of the subsequent estrous cycle. Measurements obtained from recorded ultrasonographic images were used to determine actual ovarian volume cm = [0.

Distal ulnar ostectomy may be performed palliatively in patients with distal ulnar osteosarcoma. Concurrent arthrodesis of the carpus has been proposed to counteract joint instability following transection of carpal ligaments associated with removal of the distal ulna. The objective of this prospective one group pretest, posttest study was to assess stability of the carpus following distal ulnar ostectomy using pre- and postoperative stress radiographic views in a group of canine cadaver limbs.

Increased systemic concentrations of L-lactate and unmeasured strong ions (USI) are associated with an increased risk of mortality in human neonates and adults suffering from various diseases. This exploratory study aimed to investigate if values of certain acid-base parameters, especially L-lactate and USI, on admission to hospital are associated with mortality in diarrheic calves. Fifty-five calves < 28 days old admitted to 2 teaching hospitals for diagnosis and treatment of diarrhea were included.

Objective: To assess the influence of a 50% distal ulnectomy on mediolateral carpal stability in the dog.

Study Design: Canine cadaveric study.

Sample Population: Seven canine thoracic limbs METHODS: Thoracic limbs were placed in a jig to mimic weight bearing with a load representing 30% of body weight.

Background: The quantitative effect of strong electrolytes, unmeasured anions (UAs), pCO2 , and plasma protein concentrations in determining plasma pH and bicarbonate (HCO3 (-) ) can be demonstrated using the physicochemical approach. Demeanor of calves with diarrhea is associated with acidemia, dehydration, and hyper-d-lactatemia.

Hypothesis: Unmeasured anions are a major factor influencing changes in plasma pH and HCO3 (-) of calves with diarrhea and UAs and strong UAs, estimated by anion gap (AG) and strong ion gap (SIG), respectively, are more strongly associated with alteration of demeanor compared to other acid-base variables.

Few studies have investigated immunosenescence in the horse, but it is accepted that the primary and secondary (anamnestic) immune responses may differ between aged and younger horses. The aim of the present study was to determine whether aged horses have a protective immune response post-vaccination. Thirty-four aged healthy horses (> or =20 years) and 29 younger adult horses (4-12 years) of various breeds were vaccinated with commercially produced killed rabies and influenza vaccines.

Patients with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) have incurable skin fragility, blistering, and scarring due to mutations in the gene that encodes for type VII collagen (C7) that mediates dermal-epidermal adherence in human skin. We showed previously that intradermal injection of recombinant C7 into transplanted human DEB skin equivalents stably restored C7 expression at the basement membrane zone (BMZ) and reversed the RDEB disease features. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of protein therapy in a C7 null mouse (Col7a1(-/-)) which recapitulates the features of human RDEB.

Background: The proportion of geriatric horses within the equine population has increased in the past decade, but there is limited information on the immune function of these animals.

Hypothesis: Aged horses will have a lesser increase in serum antibody response to vaccination.

Animals: Thirty-four aged healthy horses (> or = 20 years) and 29 younger adult horses (4-12 years) of various breeds.

A fecal sample from a 42-year-old goat with a 2-month history of poor weight gain and diarrhea yielded a moderate growth of an organism resembling Salmonella spp. on MacConkey agar. The organism was identified as Escherichia fergusonii.

Objective: To develop a transcutaneous ultrasonography (TUS) method for measuring the location of the stomach during various levels of fluid distension and evaluate any correlation between gastric fluid distension and stomach position.

Animals: 6 adult horses.

Procedures: Known volumes of water were administered in 2 trials.

A lesion in the cervical region of a 14-month-old Belgian gelding with severe ataxia was suspected. Necropsy revealed symmetric focal cartilage defects compatible with osteochondrosis of the occipital condyles and atlanto-occipital dysplasia. To our knowledge this is the first equine report of symmetrical osteochondrosis of the occipital condyles causing neurologic signs.
