Cytokine storm (CS) refers to the spontaneous dysregulated and hyper-activated inflammatory reaction occurring in various clinical conditions, ranging from microbial infection to end-stage organ failure. Recently the novel coronavirus involved in COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2) has been associated with the pathological phenomenon of CS in critically ill patients. Intermittent preventive therapy during pregnancy (IPTp) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) is recommended in areas of moderate to high malaria transmission intensity. As a result of the increasing prevalence of SP resistance markers, IPTp-SP was withdrawn from Rwanda in 2008. Atovaquone-proguanil is one of the most commonly prescribed malaria prophylactic drugs. However, sporadic mutations conferring resistance to atovaquone have been detected in recent years associated with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the Plasmodium falciparum cytochrome b ( pfcytb) gene.
