Article Synopsis
  • Land transportation leads to significant heavy metal contamination along roadsides, impacting human health through various exposure methods like inhalation and skin contact.
  • This study focused on measuring concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu) in roadside soil and leaves of two plant species, Calotropis procera and Nerium oleander, along two busy roads in Punjab, Pakistan.
  • Results showed higher metal concentrations in both soil and plant leaves near the roads compared to control sites, with variations observed across seasons, indicating that Calotropis procera is more effective for reducing metal contamination than Nerium oleander.

Carotenoid cleavage oxygenase (CCO) is an enzyme capable of converting carotenoids into volatile, aromatic compounds and it plays an important role in the production of two significant plant hormones, i.e., abscisic acid (ABA) and strigolactone (SL).

A sentinel plot case study was carried out to identify and map the distribution of begomovirus-betasatellite complexes in sentinel plots and commercial cotton fields over a four-year period using molecular and high-throughput DNA 'discovery' sequencing approaches. Samples were collected from 15 study sites in the two major cotton-producing areas of Pakistan. Whitefly- and leafhopper-transmitted geminiviruses were detected in previously unreported host plant species and locations.

As part of a study to determine the diversity of whitefly-transmitted viruses (genus Begomovirus, family Geminiviridae) associated with cotton leaf curl disease in Pakistan, leaf samples from cotton plants showing typical leaf curl disease symptoms were collected in various locations of Punjab province. Sequence analysis of full-length virus clones (~2.7 kb) showed plants to be infected with the begomovirus cotton leaf curl Burewala virus, the only virus identified in cotton in the Punjab since 2001.
