Article Synopsis
  • Climate change is seriously threatening biodiversity, and protected areas (PAs) are key to conservation efforts, with global PA coverage expected to reach 30% by 2030.
  • A study assessing climate change risks to PAs and non-protected land in Pakistan indicates that between 7% and 19% of current PAs face extreme future risk, particularly in eastern and southeastern regions, with risk hotspots expanding over time.
  • In contrast, northern PAs are predicted to remain at moderate to low risk, highlighting the potential for expanding the PA network in response to varying risks across different regions.

Environmental nanoremediation is an emerging technology that aims to rapidly and efficiently remove contaminants from the polluted sites using engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). Inorganic nanoparticles which are generally metallic, silica-based, carbon-based, or polymeric in nature serve to remediate through chemical reactions, filtration, or adsorption. Their greater surface area per unit mass and high reactivity enable them to treat groundwater, wastewater, oilfields, and toxic industrial contaminants.
