Autonomic Dysfunction in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis - A Case-Control Study.

Introduction: This study aimed to explore autonomic nervous system involvement in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients by evaluating sympathetic skin response (SSR).

Materials And Methods: The study included 35 sporadic (ALS) patients (cases), and 35 healthy age and sex-matched participants (controls) aged <60 years. SSR was recorded in the electrophysiology lab of the Neurology Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Transcranial Doppler in the Detection of Cerebral Vasospasm After Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

Background Transcranial Doppler (TCD) is a simple, noninvasive, nonionizing, portable technique but not widely practiced to detect cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Objective The aim of this study was to assess the performance of TCD in the detection of cerebral vasospasm in patients with SAH considering CT angiography (CTA) as a gold standard. Methods and material This cross-sectional study included 50 patients with acute SAH admitted to the National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital (NINS & H), Dhaka, Bangladesh, from February to June 2021.

The Association of Carotid Plaque Size, Carotid Intima-Media Thickness, Resistive Index, and Pulsatility Index With Acute Ischemic Stroke.

Background: Carotid atherosclerosis is an important etiological factor for ischemic stroke. Early carotid lesion detection may prevent further strokes. Doppler ultrasound measures carotid artery blood flow, intima-media thickness, stenosis, plaques, and lumen and wall changes.

Acute Vaccine-Related Encephalopathy and Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) After COVID-19 Vaccination: A Case Series From Bangladesh.

There are several reported cases of various neurological adverse effects following the COVID-19 vaccination globally. Acute vaccine-related encephalopathy and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) are included among them. Here we are reporting three cases of ADEM and one case of acute vaccine-related encephalopathy from Bangladesh, which have a possible association with COVID-19 vaccines.

A Case of Swallowing Apraxia Due to Acute Infarct in the Right Precentral Gyrus.

Swallowing apraxia is an intriguing type of apraxia where the patient cannot swallow despite normal neurological examinations including motor, sensory and cerebellar function. In this case report, we present a 60-year-old hypertensive male with swallowing apraxia. There was no attempt to swallow when food materials were given inside his mouth.

Acute Ischemic Stroke Due to Spontaneous Internal Carotid Artery Dissection in a Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) B27 Young Male.

Carotid artery dissection is a significant cause of stroke in young patients. Here, we report a 33-year-old male who presented with right homonymous hemianopia and paresthesia of the right side of the body. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed an acute infarct in the left parieto-occipital region.

A Case of Brain Tuberculosis With an Unusual Presentation Mimicking Viral Fever During a Dengue Outbreak in Bangladesh.

Both dengue and tuberculosis are endemic in South Asian countries, including Bangladesh. Here we report an interesting case presenting as suspected dengue fever and eventually diagnosed as a case of brain tuberculosis. A 27-year-old immunocompetent male presented to us with fever, headache, retro-orbital pain, and photophobia for five days.

A Rare Case of Severe Neutropenia Due to Chikungunya Fever Which Improved With Filgrastim.

Chikungunya fever is a re-emerging viral illness affecting different parts of the world. Most patients recover without any serious complications. Here, we present a rare case of chikungunya fever with severe neutropenia and moderate thrombocytopenia.

Proximal Myopathy With Hypercalcemic Crisis and Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma in a 38-Year-Old Female.

Although proximal myopathy is a well-known manifestation of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP), it is usually not the first one. Here, we present the case of a 38-year-old female who presented to the neurology outpatient department with proximal myopathy as the presenting feature of PHP along with a hypercalcemic crisis. Her serum calcium and intact parathyroid hormone levels were very high.

Role of Personal Protective Measures in Prevention of COVID-19 Spread Among Physicians in Bangladesh: a Multicenter Cross-Sectional Comparative Study.

This study aims to determine the role of personal protective measures in the prevention of COVID-19 spread among the physicians working at different health facilities in Bangladesh. This hospital-based cross-sectional comparative study was conducted from May to June 2020. A total of 98 COVID-19 positive physicians and 92 COVID-19 negative physicians (physicians with no symptoms of COVID-19 or who tested negative) were enrolled.
