Vertebral artery (VA) injury during catheterization is quite rare given its anatomical position, but can be catastrophic when it is not discovered early on and managed accordingly. A multidisciplinary approach to the management of such injury has to weigh-in the benefits and risks of open surgery versus endovascular intervention. This can be done after thorough assessment of the patient's condition and accessibility of the injured vessel.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the CAVeA2T2 scoring system to predict the survival rates of brachiocephalic arteriovenous fistulas (BC-AVFs) in patients receiving dialysis.
  • Data from 112 BC-AVF patients showed no significant difference in primary patency rates between groups with scores < 2 and ≥ 2, but significant differences were found in secondary patency rates at multiple time points.
  • The research concludes that a CAVeA2T2 score of ≥2 indicates poorer patency and survival rates for BC-AVFs, establishing the score as a reliable tool for clinical assessment.

We have successfully developed a flexible green aqueous approach for the formation of a carbon-carbon bond by the reaction of highly-enolizable carbanions (mostly derived from 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds) with an aromatic carbon bearing a nitro group. The key step involves a nucleophilic displacement reaction. All newly synthesized compounds were unambiguously characterized various spectroscopic techniques including NMR, mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction as applicable.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived Co-N-C catalysts with isolated single cobalt atoms have been synthesized and compared with cobalt nanoparticles for formic acid dehydrogenation. The atomically dispersed Co-N-C catalyst achieves superior activity, better acid resistance, and improved long-term stability compared with nanoparticles synthesized by a similar route. High-angle annular dark-field-scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and X-ray absorption fine structure characterizations reveal the formation of Co N centers as active sites.

The phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of a live-attenuated genotype I (GI) strain (SD12-F120) of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) were compared with its virulent parental SD12 strain to gain an insight into the genetic changes acquired during the attenuation process. SD12-F120 formed smaller plaque on BHK-21 cells and showed reduced replication in mouse brains compared with SD12. Mice inoculated with SD12-F120 via either intraperitoneal or intracerebral route showed no clinical symptoms, indicating a highly attenuated phenotype in terms of both neuroinvasiveness and neurovirulence.
