In the general population, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is synonymous with vascular disease and associated with increased mortality. Vascular disease is common in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on dialysis, but there is limited information on AAA in this population. To address this issue, we queried the United States Renal Data System for risk factors associated with a diagnosis of AAA as well as the impact of AAA on ESRD patient survival.

Thus, psoriasis may also represent a risk factor for stroke in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients.
Methods: We queried the United States Renal Data System for incident dialysis patients between 2004 and 2015.
Background: In the general population, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is associated with increased all-cause mortality. Transplant patients have been shown to have an increased risk of developing cSCC, and their cSCC is associated with an increased risk for mortality. In end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, there is extensive mortality and immune dysfunction.

Thus, we investigated patients with ESRD to determine risk factors for NTM disease and mortality. We queried the United States Renal Data System from 2005 to 2015 using International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9/ICD-10 codes to identify NTM and risk factors.

Thus, we determined whether psoriasis represents a significant risk factor for MI in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients.
Methods: We queried the United States Renal Data System for ESRD patients starting dialysis between 2004 and 2015.
Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are 8-10 times more likely to suffer from a stroke compared with the general public. Despite this risk, there are minimal data elucidating which hemodialysis modality is best for patients with ESRD following a stroke, and guidelines for their management are lacking. We retrospectively queried the US Renal Data System administrative database for all-cause mortality in ESRD stroke patients who received either intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) or continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT).

Because chronic kidney disease is a risk factor for pneumonia, end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients with psoriasis may have an increased risk for acquiring pneumonia.
Material And Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis was performed using the United States Renal Data System, a medical claims database of all ESRD patients undergoing dialysis in the US.
Background: Renal transplant patients are at increased risk for mucormycosis. Diabetes, neutropenia, deferoxamine therapy, and immunosuppressive medications have been associated with increased risk of mucormycosis in studies of solid organ transplant recipients. To focus on renal transplant patients, the US Renal Data System (USRDS) was queried to determine the incidence and risk factors for mucormycosis.

Diagnosis and treatment may improve prognosis; however, many patients do not regain full joint function. In patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), immune dysfunction due to uremia and chronic vascular access leads to increased risk of infection.

In renal transplant patients, information on the incidence and risk factors associated with nocardiosis is limited. To address the incidence and risk factors associated with nocardiosis in a large renal transplant population, we used the US Renal Data System (USRDS).

Because of chronic vascular access and epidermal dysfunction, end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients with psoriasis may be at greater risk for infection, and psoriasis treatment could affect this risk.

Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the incidence of selected malignancies and identify their potential risk factors in HIV-infected dialysis patients.
Methods: This study was a nationwide cohort analysis using the US Renal Data System.
Unlabelled: Having rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) can lead to fractures. RA independently increases the risk of hip or other femur fracture in dialysis patients. Use of corticosteroids is a potentially modifiable risk factor for fractures among persons with RA and ESRD on dialysis.

Very few studies to date have evaluated the benefit of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation for secondary prevention in patients with ESRD. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of secondary-prevention ICDs in reducing all-cause mortality in patients on dialysis using the United States Renal Data System (USRDS) database.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is also associated with an increased risk of malignancy, but the incidence of and risk factors for HPV-associated cancers in US dialysis patients are not defined. We queried the US Renal Data System for women with HPV-associated cancers and assessed for incidence of cancer diagnosis and association of risk factors.

Design And Methods: This is a retrospective, secondary data analysis of the Comprehensive Dialysis Survey study participants who had a baseline food frequency questionnaire and baseline lab data (N = 358). We examined intake of protein, phosphorus, and 7 other key nutrients from a subcohort of the Comprehensive Dialysis Survey based on the published National Kidney Foundation Kidney Dialysis Outcome Quality Initiative's nutrition recommendations.
Background: Kidney transplant recipients are at increased risk for developing invasive fungal infections (IFI). We queried the United States Renal Data System (USRDS) for risk factors for IFI in these patients.
Methods: Patients who underwent a kidney transplant between 2005 and 2008 were queried for an IFI diagnosis using ICD-9 codes.
Background: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients have increased risk of developing herpes zoster (zoster) compared with the general population, but mortality risk is unknown. We assessed the risk of mortality in hospitalized ESRD patients with a diagnosis of zoster from the inpatient hospital files (as opposed to outpatient records) of the United States Renal Data System.
Methods: This study analyzed incident ESRD patients from 2006 to 2009.
Background: High mortality in dialysis patients may be associated with protein-energy wasting (PEW) syndrome characterized by progressively depleted protein and energy stores. While early diagnosis and treatment of PEW can reduce mortality, clinically practical measures for its detection are lacking. Poor dietary protein intake (DPI) is associated with risk of malnutrition and PEW.

Objectives: To study the optimal management of device infections in patients with ESRD.
Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and bacteremia are common comorbidities in hemodialysis patients. A specific relationship between HCV infection and bacteremia has not been defined; however, there is evidence of immune compromise in both HCV-infected and uremic patients, suggesting that this group may be at higher risk for infection.
Methods: We investigated risk factors and mortality associated with bacteremia in HCV-infected hemodialysis patients from the United States Renal Data System.
