The discovery of leucine-rich-containing G-protein-coupled receptor 5 (Lgr5) as an intestinal adult stem cell marker had blazed a trail in stem cell biology and laid the foundations of modern organoid technology. Up to date, several well-established intestinal organoid protocols have been reported in the literature from different sources, including adult and induced pluripotent stem cells. Here, we demonstrate a BALB/c mouse-derived intestinal organoid culture protocol, passaging, and cryopreservation procedures.

Predicting mortality in adults hospitalized with multiple trauma: Can the BIG score estimate risk?

Background: This study aimed to compare the predictive performance of the BIG score (base deficit + [2.5 × international normalized ratio (INR)] + [15 - Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)]) for in-hospital mortality in adult patients with multiple trauma against other scoring systems, including the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), Revised Trauma Score (RTS), and Injury Severity Score (ISS).

Methods: A retrospective single-center study was conducted, including 563 adults (aged ≥18 years) with multiple trauma who were admitted to the emergency department and hospitalized between January 2022 and December 2023.

This study investigated the professional values of midwifery students and the factors influencing these values. Conducted from January 6 to March 6, 2021, it involved 715 midwifery students who participated voluntarily. Data was collected using a Descriptive Data Sheet and the Professional Values of Midwives Scale.

Data were collected using Personal Information Form, Turkish Death Anxiety Scale (TDAS), and Attitudes toward Ageing and Elderliness Scale (ATAES).

Divergence of gut bacteria through the selection of genomic variants implicated in the metabolism of sugars, amino acids, and purines by small extracellular vesicles in milk.

Here, we report that small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) in milk mediate the communication between bacteria and animal kingdoms, increase the divergence of bacteria in the intestine, and alter metabolite production by bacteria. We show that bovine milk sEVs select approximately 55,000 genomic variants in 19 species of bacteria from the murine cecum . The genomic variants are transcribed into mRNA.

Acrodermatitis dysmetabolica: lessons from two pediatric cases.

Objectives: Acrodermatitis dysmetabolica (AD) is a dermatologic manifestation associated with inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs), distinct from acrodermatitis enteropathica, which occurs solely due to zinc deficiency.

Case Presentation: This report presents two pediatric cases: a 30-month-old girl with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) experiencing AD secondary to severe isoleucine deficiency due to a protein-restricted diet, showing improvement with dietary adjustments, and a 2.5-month-old boy infant with propionic acidemia (PA) who developed AD alongside septic shock, which progressed despite intervention.

[Multicentric Screening of Local Antibiotic Resistance in Uncomplicated Urinary System Infections: 1850 Patients from 37 Centers].

This study was aimed to identify the most frequently observed pathogens in uncomplicated urinary tract infections from outpatient urinary isolates obtained across seven different geographical regions in Türkiye and to determine whether the antibiotic resistance rates of these pathogens differ significantly between these regions. The study included patients aged 18 to 65 years who were diagnosed with uncomplicated urinary tract infections and had positive urine cultures from March 2021 to August 2022, across 37 different centers in Türkiye. The participating centers were selected based on their use of the disk diffusion method, in line with the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) guidelines, to ensure standardization of urine culture data.

Highly selective inhibitors of cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6is) have emerged as a standart of care for first- and second-line therapies in combination with endocrine therapy (ET) for HR+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients. It has been reported that combination therapy is more effective than ET alone and is safe in elderly patients as well as young patients. In this study, we aim to understand the intricate dynamics of hole interactions, particularly focusing on the competition between on-site repulsion and hole-lattice coupling. Our results reveal a striking feature-an effective nearest-neighbor attraction between holes, even in the presence of the on-site repulsion typical of Mott insulators.

The effects of psychosocial aftercare following pediatric chronic pain treatment withstand the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic: long-term outcomes of a randomized controlled trial.

Introduction: Intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment (IIPT) is the best therapy available for children and adolescents affected by severe chronic pain. Psychosocial aftercare (PAC) offered for 6 months after IIPT can improve treatment outcomes for up to 12 months.

Objectives: The current study is the first to explore whether PAC is superior to treatment as usual at a long-term follow-up of 18 to 33 months after discharge-including when facing the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

The prevalence of centenarians, people who lived 100 years and longer, is steadily growing in the last decades. This exceptional longevity is based on multifaceted processes influenced by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors such as sex, (epi-)genetic factors, gut microbiota, cellular metabolism, exposure to oxidative stress, immune status, cardiovascular risk factors, environmental factors, and lifestyle behavior. Epidemiologically, the incidence rate of cardiovascular diseases is reduced in healthy centenarians along with late onset of age-related diseases compared with the general aged population.

Protective effects of tadalafil and N-acetyl cysteine therapy on cisplatin-induced testicular toxicity.

Purpose: To investigate whether tadalafil (TAD) and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) can prevent cisplatin (CIS)-induced testicular toxicity.

Methods: Forty Wistar-Albino rats were divided into five groups: Control group, CIS group, TAD group, NAC group and TAD + NAC group. All groups were compared regarding body and testicular weights, testicular volumes, blood testosterone levels, testicular tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, histopathological features, and testicular Cosentino and Johnsen scores.

The Relationship Between Substance Abuse Proclivity and Spiritual Well-Being Levels of University Students in Türkiye.

Focusing on young adults constituting the most vulnerable and risky group regarding substance abuse, the present study was carried out in order to examine the relationship between the spiritual well-being levels of university students and their substance abuse proclivity. Having a descriptive and cross sectional design, this study was completed with 250 students studying at a Vocational High School of a university in Türkiye during the academic year 2021-2022. The data collection process was carried out by using the "Personal Information Form," the "Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS)," and the "Substance Use Tendency Scale (SAPS).

The Awareness of Methylphenidate and Its Use: Experiences and Perceptions of Medical Students.

Background and objective Over the past decade, the use of psychostimulants typically prescribed for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), such as methylphenidate (MP), has become popular among undergraduate students to enhance their academic performance. Despite potential health and legal repercussions, the misuse of these medications has become a significant public health issue, not only in the general population but particularly among students in medical schools across Turkey. This study investigated the prevalence of MP misuse among Turkish medical students and the factors contributing to it.
