Purpose: To compare doxorubicin-loaded HepaSphere transarterial chemoembolization versus conventional transarterial chemoembolization in terms of survival, time to recurrence, acute reversible hepatotoxicity, postembolization syndrome, and chemoembolization-related mortality and morbidity.

Materials And Methods: One hundred twenty-six patients (103 men, 23 women; mean age, 64.3 y) with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who underwent conventional chemoembolization between January 2007 and March 2011 or drug-eluting embolic (DEE) chemoembolization (after the protocol change) between March 2011 and October 2014 were included in a retrospective analysis.

Periodontitis is an infectious inflammatory disease that destroys the tooth-supporting tissues. It is caused by the formation of subgingival biofilms on the surface of the tooth. Characteristic bacteria associated with subgingival biofilms are the Gram-negative anaerobes Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia and Treponema denticola, collectively known as the "red complex" species.

Background: Since the first liver transplantation, pretransplantation or post-transplantation renal problems are still among the main causes of mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of fluid replacement solutions used intraoperatively on renal functions in elective living-donor liver transplantation.

Methods: After Ethics Committee approval, informed consents were obtained from patients.

Objective: Macrovesicular hepatosteatosis is related to post-transplantation complications, so preoperative hepatosteatosis determination plays a critical role in donor selection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of unenhanced computerized tomography (CT) in determining hepatosteatosis in liver donor candidates.

Methods: Information about donor candidates was retrospectively reviewed.

The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy and safety of valethamate bromide and placebo against placebo in shortening the duration of active labour. A prospective randomised trial of 158 low-risk women in spontaneous labour was conducted. After evaluation of the patients according to exclusion criteria 30 women were given valethamate bromide (Group 1) and 32 women were given placebo (Group 2).

Minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) is the procedure of choice in experienced centers and can be offered in combination with other thoracic procedures. Between 2001 and 2013, 3 cases involving MIRPE and lung surgery were done in our clinic. While postoperative course of 2 procedures (MIRPE and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery [VATS] segmentectomy and MIRPE and VATS bullectomy) were uncomplicated, the MIRPE and VATS lung biopsy patient developed major complications arising from prolonged air leak and was ultimately managed with an Eloesser flap.

Introduction: It is claimed that CO2 pneumoperitoneum (CP) is less adhesiogenic than laparotomy. Our aim in this study was to investigate the local oxidative stress responses and related adhesion formation resulting from exposure to CP.

Methods: Forty-five rats were randomised into six groups.

Objectives: The objective of the study was to evaluate the association of maternal plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) at late second and third trimester and the risk of pre-eclampsia.

Methods: In this prospective cohort study, maternal plasma 25(OH)D levels were measured at late second and third trimester in 77 women who later developed pre-eclampsia (31 non-severe and 46 severe cases) and 180 women without pre-eclampsia.

Results: The mean gestational age of the timing of the blood sampling was 31.

Background: Periodontal diseases may affect local and systemic inflammation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. This systemic health burden could compromise the outcome of pregnancy in expectant mothers. The aim of the present study was to evaluate oxidative stress markers, including glutathione peroxidase (GPx), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), and total bacterial loads in the saliva of pregnant and postpartum women, and to investigate their association with periodontal disease severity.

The variations between different individuals in the xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes' activity were shown to modify susceptibility to childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Polymorphisms associated with genes coding for the glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzyme were known to affect the metabolism of different carcinogens. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the GSTM1 and GSTT1 deletion polymorphisms, and the GSTP1 Ile105Val single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) on the susceptibility to childhood ALL.

Objective: Ensuring a consistent and systematic approach to the delivery of care for people with advanced disease is a priority for palliative care services worldwide. Many clinical tools are available to aid in this process; however, they are often used sporadically, and implementation of a routine set of clinical tools to guide care planning in the specialist palliative care sector in Australia has not been achieved. This study sought to recommend key clinical tools that may assist with the assessment and care planning of specialist palliative care provision for patients and family caregivers admitted to specialist palliative care settings (home, hospital, and hospice).

The development of dental caries and periodontal diseases result from distinct shifts in the microbiota of the tooth-associated biofilm. This in vitro study aimed to investigate changes in biofilm composition and structure, during the shift from a 'supragingival' aerobic profile to a 'subgingival' anaerobic profile. Biofilms consisting of Actinomyces oris, Candida albicans, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus mutans and Veillonella dispar were aerobically grown in saliva-containing medium on hydroxyapatite disks.
