Metaproteome and metabolome of oral microbial communities.

The emergence of high-throughput technologies for the comprehensive measurement of biomolecules, also referred to as "omics" technologies, has helped us gather "big data" and characterize microbial communities. In this article, we focus on metaproteomic and metabolomic approaches that support hypothesis-driven investigations on various oral biologic samples. Proteomics reveals the working units of the oral milieu and metabolomics unveils the reactions taking place; and so these complementary techniques can unravel the functionality and underlying regulatory processes within various oral microbial communities.

FDG-Avid Lung Nodule Formation by the Use of Hemostatic Powder: A Potential Cause of False-Positive FDG PET/CT.

FDG PET/CT is used in the diagnosis and follow-up of various malignant tumors and changes patient management in routine clinical practice. However, inflammatory, infectious, physiological, and technical causes and benign pathological conditions may lead to false-positive FDG uptake. We report a case of a 59-year-old man who was considered having a false-positive FDG-PET pulmonary nodular lesion in favor of metastasis, which was formed by the use of hemostatic powder.

Interaction between childhood vocal fold nodules and allergic diseases.

Objectives: Vocal fold nodules (VFNs) are benign lesions at the junction of the anterior and middle third of the vocal folds. Although VFNs are often a result of vocal cord trauma due to vocal abuse, childhood allergic diseases, and medications may be a cause. We aimed to investigate the association of detected VFNs with allergic diseases in childhood patients with vocal abuse.

Proteome and Microbiome Mapping of Human Gingival Tissue in Health and Disease.

Efforts to map gingival tissue proteomes and microbiomes have been hampered by lack of sufficient tissue extraction methods. The pressure cycling technology (PCT) is an emerging platform for reproducible tissue homogenisation and improved sequence retrieval coverage. Therefore, we employed PCT to characterise the proteome and microbiome profiles in healthy and diseased gingival tissue.

Assessment of different nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes for simultaneous removal of arsenic and boron from spent geothermal water.

One of the factors that determine agricultural crops' yield is the quality of water used during irrigation. In this study, we assessed the usability of spent geothermal water for agricultural irrigation after membrane treatment. Preliminary membrane tests were conducted on a laboratory-scale set up followed by mini-pilot scale tests in a geothermal heating center.

Objectives: Esophagoduodenoscopy and colonoscopy can be done as bidirectional endoscopy in the same session. The aim of this study was to compare anesthetic requirements and hemodynamic effects in esophagoduodenoscopy or colonoscopy done first for bidirectional endoscopy.

Since December 2019, the world has been battling the COVID-19 pandemic, and health workers are at the forefront of the fight. Surgeons also fulfill their duty; however, elective cases had to be postponed in order to use resources appropriately in the fight against coronavirus. Although benign elective surgical procedures can be postponed to a distant time during this pandemic, surgical interventions for urgent and life-threatening situations are mandatory to perform but the main uncertainty among surgeons is about cancer patients.

Naringin Combined with NF-κB Inhibition and Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Induces Apoptotic Cell Death via Oxidative Stress and the PERK/eIF2α/ATF4/CHOP Axis in HT29 Colon Cancer Cells.

Currently, combination therapy is considered the most effective solution for a selective chemotherapeutic effect in the treatment of colon cancer. This study investigated the death of both colon cancer HT29 cells and healthy vascular smooth muscle TG-Ha-VSMC cells (VSMCs) induced by naringin combined with endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and NF-κB inhibition. Naringin combined with tunicamycin and BAY 11-7082 suppressed the proliferation of HT29 cells in a dose-dependent manner and induced particularly apoptotic death without significantly affecting healthy VSMCs according to Annexin V/PI staining and AO/EB staining analyses.

To compare percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) outcomes between the elderly and young age groups and examined differences between young-old, old-old, and oldest-old patients. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 8191 renal units that underwent PCNL between September 1997 and March 2020 at three Turkish academic institutions. Patients were classified into young (18-64 years) and elderly (65+ years) age groups.

Oral health is maintained by a healthy microbiome, which can be monitored by state-of-the art diagnostics. Therefore, this study evaluated the presence and quantity of ten oral disease-associated taxa (, , , , , , , , oral associated ) in saliva and their clinical status association in 214 individuals. Upon clinical examination, study subjects were grouped into healthy, caries and periodontitis and their saliva was collected.

Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy in Allograft Kidney.

The incidence of renal tumor on the allograft kidney is relatively rare. There is no standard treatment available for the management of such cases. However, if technically feasible nephron-sparing surgical approaches, whether open or minimally invasive, should be preferred for the management of these challenging cases.

Salivary proteotypes of gingivitis tolerance and resilience.

Aim: This study aimed to characterize the salivary proteome during the induction and resolution of gingival inflammation in the course of human experimental gingivitis (EG), and to cluster the proteomic profiles based on the clinically defined "slow" and "fast" response patterns.

Materials And Methods: A total of 50 unstimulated whole saliva were obtained from the EG model which was induced over 21 days (days 0, 7, 14 and 21), followed by a two-week resolution phase (day 35). Label-free quantitative proteomics using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was applied.

Eczema herpeticum emerging during atopic dermatitis in infancy.

Background: Eczema herpeticum (EH) is an acute disseminated viral infection that develops in the presence of an existing skin lesion, often on the ground of atopic dermatitis (AD). Morbidity and mortality of EH can be minimized by starting antiviral therapy at the earliest time in diagnosis.

Case: Herein we report five infants diagnosed with EH in the course of AD treatment.
