Pneumomediastinum is a result of perforation of the tracheobronchial tree. When air enters the interstitial space, air diffuses along the perivascular sheaths toward the mediastinum. If an air leak persists, subcutaneous emphysema occurs owing to the continuous leakage of air.

We report a case of a 41-year-old man who was admitted because of cardiomegaly and a feeling of discomfort in his chest. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging studies showed a large mass occupying the mediastinum and pericardial space.

Background: A 57-year-old male with an aortobifemoral bypass graft presented to a gastroenterology clinic with a 3-month history of intermittent hematemesis, melena and fever. The patient had received antibiotic therapy 2 months before for the same symptoms; however, following brief regression ( approximately 3 weeks) the symptoms had returned.
Investigations: Physical examination; analysis of full blood count; measurement of erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein levels, liver enzymes, electrolytes, renal function, serum cholesterol and serum triglyceride; HIV serology; blood, sputum, urine and stool culture analysis; performance of esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, abdominal ultrasonography and multidetector CT scanning.

Background: AIDS, SARS, and the recent epidemics of the avian-flu have all served to remind us the debate over the limits of the moral duty to care. It is important to first consider the question of whether or not the "duty to treat" might be subject to contextual constraints. The purpose of this study was to investigate the opinions and beliefs held by both physicians and dentists regarding the occupational risks of infectious diseases, and to analyze the argument that the notion of "presumed consent" on the part of professionals may be grounds for supporting the duty to treat.

In untreated paraphimosis, increasing edema caused by vascular and lymphatic obstruction results in ominous sequelae such as penile gangrene, which leads to autoamputation in days or weeks. Most cases of paraphimosis are iatrogenic, but that condition has unusual causes as well.

This climate of debate and transition provides an ideal time to rethink patient responsibilities, together with their underlying rationale, and to determine if they are properly represented when being called 'patient' responsibilities. In this article we analyze the various types of patient responsibilities, identify the underlying motivations behind their creation, and conclude upon their sensibleness and merit.

Methods: Meningitis was induced by direct inoculation of a clinical strain isolated from an immunocompromised patient (10(7) cfu/mL) into the cisterna magna of New Zealand rabbits. After 16 h of incubation, rabbits were separated into four groups: moxifloxacin (M), ampicillin + gentamicin (A), ampicillin + gentamicin 2 (A2) and control (C).
Objective: To investigate expression patterns and relationship of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), vascular endothelial receptor-3 (VEGF-R3) (FLT-4) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in psoriasis.
Study Design: Forty-three patients were included in this study. The clinical severity of psoriasis was assessed using the psoriasis area and severity index (PASI).
Aneurysms of the complex of the anterior cerebral artery are frequently associated with anatomic variations of the circle of Willis. We describe a case of aneurysmal rupture of the anterior communicating artery, a variant of the anterior cerebral artery. The aneurysm appeared to be situated on this vessel proximal to the infered site of the AcoA.

Little is known about uptake, distribution, toxicity and detoxification of zinc ions in cells. In this study, zinc toxicity and detoxification levels have been compared in wild type and Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase mutant (sod1Delta) cells of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to systematically review the Turkish literature of acute adult purulent meningitis.
Materials And Methods: The published series of three national databases and two international databases were searched to perform the review. In addition to the databases, abstracts of congresses held between 1994 and 2003 by the Turkish Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Association, Turkish Microbiology Association, and the Antibiotic and Chemotherapy Association were searched for reports about acute purulent meningitis.
Neutropenic enterocolitis (NE) and acute appendicitis are life-threatening conditions that develop in children with severe or prolonged neutropenia secondary to acute leukemia and lymphoma. The medical records of 118 patients who were treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (69 patients), acute myelogenous leukemia (22 patients), or aplastic anemia (27 patients) between 1997 and 2006 in our hospital pediatric hematology department were examined retrospectively. NE was diagnosed in 11 patients (age range, 2.

Consequently, the exact knowledge of the anatomic locations of neurovascular structures and their interactions may ensure that the surgical intervention is planned in the most appropriate way and the structures are accessed with the least complication risk during the intervention.
Material And Methods: A decapitated and formalin fixated whole-head of a male human cadaver kept for educational and research purposes in the Dokuz Eylul University Department of Anatomy was used in this study.

Malacoplakia is a rare inflammatory condition characterized by demonstrative Michaelis-Gutmann bodies, which are foamy histiocytes with distinctive basophilic inclusions. Malacoplakia is caused by the inadequate elimination of bacteria by macrophages or monocytes as a result of defective phagocytic activity. Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is characterized by the destruction of renal parenchyma and its replacement by solid sheets of foamy lipid-laden macrophages.
