Objective: We examined the feasibility and clinical outcomes of implementing a brief intervention for treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in persons with serious mental illness receiving services at a large, urban community mental health agency. The Brief, Relaxation, Education and Trauma Healing (BREATHE) program is a standardized, three-session intervention that targets PTSD symptoms through teaching breathing retraining and personalized psychoeducation about trauma and PTSD.
Method: A total of 60 clinicians were trained in the BREATHE intervention throughout the agency, which was offered to 233 clients who screened positive for probable PTSD.
Background: Trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common among individuals with serious mental illness (SMI; e.g., schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, treatment refractory major depressive disorder), with resultant functional impairment.

Methods: Screening for trauma history and PTSD symptoms was implemented in a community mental health service system. 266 treatment-seeking young adults (aged 18-35) endorsed trauma exposure with a score of at least 45 on the DSM-IV PTSD Checklist, indicating probable PTSD.
Individuals who live with mental illness are encumbered by related risk factors that increase the probability of legal involvement. The goal was to determine how homelessness and substance use disorder are intervening factors in the relationship between symptoms of serious mental illness (SMI) and criminal offending. A sample of 210 chronically homeless adults receiving SAMHSA-funded outreach and psychiatric rehabilitation services between 2014 and 2016 was recruited in a study of interventions to address housing in homeless persons with a SMI.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Inpatients (ACT-IN) with psychosis has been found to be efficacious in previous trials, but its effectiveness has not been studied when implemented by frontline clinicians in routine settings.
Method: In this pilot randomized controlled effectiveness trial, inpatients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders were randomized to ACT-IN plus treatment as usual (TAU) (n = 23) or a time/attention matched (TAM) supportive condition plus TAU (n = 23) delivered by routine hospital staff. Both conditions received individual and group therapy during inpatient care and completed follow-up phone sessions during the first month post-discharge.
Importance: Impaired cognitive functioning is a core characteristic of schizophrenia, present from the onset of the illness and relatively stable thereafter. Despite evidence supporting the impact of early intervention services (EIS) on improving symptoms and functioning in first episode psychosis (FEP), controlled research has not examined its impact on cognitive functioning.
Objective: To evaluate the longitudinal course of cognitive functioning in FEP patients participating in a large, controlled study comparing EIS with usual services.
Objective: Employment rates among individuals with serious mental illness may be improved by engagement in the individual placement and support (IPS) model of supported employment. Results from a recent randomized controlled trial (RCT) indicate that virtual reality job interview training (VR-JIT) improves employment rates among individuals with serious mental illness who have been actively engaged in IPS for at least 90 days. This study reports on an initial implementation evaluation of VR-JIT during the RCT in a community mental health agency.

This study explored the processes and perceived benefits of preparing for interviews using Virtual Reality Job Interviewing Training (VR-JIT) among employment specialists (ESs) and clients within the individual placement and support (IPS) model of supported employment.
Method: This study analyzed secondary qualitative data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of VR-JIT including qualitative focus groups comprised of IPS employment specialists ( = 11) and IPS clients ( = 13), semistructured interviews with IPS employment specialists ( = 3), and semistructured interviews with IPS clients ( = 3).
Objectives: Concerns about the cognitive adverse effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are common among recipients of the treatment despite its relatively small adverse effects on cognitive functioning. Interventions aimed at remediating or improving coping with cognitive adverse effects of ECT have not been developed. The Enhancing Cognitive Domains after ECT (ENCODE) program is a new group intervention aimed at teaching self-management strategies to cope with the cognitive challenges and associated anxiety that often accompanies ECT.

The Post-Traumatic Cognitions Inventory (PTCI) is a widely used instrument measuring trauma-related cognitions and beliefs with three subscales: negative thoughts of self (SELF), negative cognitions about the world (WORLD), and self-blame (BLAME).
Aims: The current study attempted to validate the use of the PTCI in people with serious mental illness (SMI), who have greater exposure to trauma and elevated rates of PTSD, using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and examining convergent and divergent correlations with relevant constructs.

Objective: To characterize the physical function of older veterans with serious mental illness (SMI) across endurance, strength, and mobility domains.
Design: Retrospective analysis of clinical performance data.
Setting: Gerofit program, a national outpatient supervised exercise program for older veterans, delivered in Veterans Health Administration sites.
Objective: The aim of our study was to gain insight into how practitioners in mental health care support people with severe psychiatric disabilities in setting and pursuing personal goals that are meaningful to them.
Method: We conducted focus groups with 36 mental health practitioners in Norway and interpreted the data by using reflexive thematic analysis.
Results: Four themes emerged from the analysis: (a) active collaboration to understand what is meaningful to the individual, (b) being nonjudgmental during the process of goal setting, (c) helping individuals break goals into smaller goals and steps, and (d) allowing time for the process of trying to achieve goals.
Psychoeducation is recommended in the treatment of patients with schizophrenia and has been shown to improve satisfaction with mental health service and treatment adherence, reduce relapse and hospital readmission rates, and enhance functioning and quality of life. Youth at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR) may also benefit from receiving psychoeducation as part of their treatment. The goal of this study was to conduct a scoping review to map out the existing literature on psychoeducation for CHR individuals, including content, utilization, and benefits, in order to identify areas for future research and clinical care.

Low social motivation contributes to impaired social functioning, but is typically examined using self-report or clinical ratings, which are prone to recall biases and do not adequately capture the dynamic nature of social motivation in daily life.
