Effects of propylthiouracil on testicular tissue in undescended testes of newborn rats.

Aim: The most important goal in the treatment of cryptorchidism is to preserve the potential for fertility. This experimental study was performed to investigate the effect of propylthiouracil (PTU) on the undescended testes (UTs) of newborn rats.

Materials And Methods: The experimental cryptorchidism model in newborn male rats consisted of 4 groups.

A case with mosaic partial duplication of 1q: prenatal and postmortem clinical and cytogenetic evaluations.

Partial trisomy 1q including different segments of the long arm is a rare cytogenetic anomaly. Especially the cases with mosaic proximal tandem duplication of 1q included a longer fragment are very rare. Cases who have partial 1q trisomy showed large phenotypic variation due to the differences in size of the duplicated segments of 1q.

Cingulate gyrus volumetry in drug free bipolar patients and patients treated with valproate or valproate and quetiapine.

In patients with bipolar disorder, recent brain imaging studies have reported cingulate cortex volume change. We performed a volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study to assess the subregions of the cingulate gyrus; left anterior cingulate (LAC), left posterior cingulate (LPC), right anterior cingulate (RAC), and right posterior cingulate (RPC). Our sample consisted of bipolar patients that are either unmedicated (n=10), on valproate monotherapy (n=10) or on valproate plus quetiapine (n=10) versus healthy comparisons (n=10).

EEG correlates of startle reflex with reactivity to eye opening in psychiatric disorders: preliminary results.

Previous studies have shown alterations of eyeblink reflex in patients with various psychiatric disorders. It has previously been demonstrated by our group that EEG measures of the reactivity to eye opening could effectively predict patient-reported startle response in patients with acute stress reaction. In our present study, EEG spectral power analysis and eyeblink electrical startle responses were acquired from a total of 39 patients diagnosed with various psychiatric disorders: 7 patients with schizophrenia, 10 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), 10 patients with panic disorder, 5 patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and 7 patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Effect of meloxicam on gingival crevicular fluid IL-1beta and IL1 receptor antagonist levels in subjects with chronic periodontitis, and its effects on clinical parameters.

Volumetric MRI study of key brain regions implicated in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Neuroanatomic abnormalities have been implicated in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). To date, no study has measured the orbito-frontal cortex (OFC), anterior cingulate, caudate nucleus, and thalamus concurrently in first-episode patients. Thus, we performed a volumetric MRI study in patients who were treatment-naive and healthy controls focusing on the in vivo neuroanatomy of the whole brain, total gray and white matter volume, thalamus, caudate nucleus, anterior cingulate cortex, and OFC concurrently.

Hippocampal 1H MRS in first-episode bipolar I patients.

Based on earlier structural and functional neuroimaging studies, we specifically wanted to assess N-acetylaspartate (NAA), choline-containing compounds (CHO), and creatine+phosphocreatine (CRE) levels in brain hippocampus previously demonstrated to be involved in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder which have not been evaluated in first-episode patients. Twelve patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for bipolar disorder who consecutively applied to our department and 12 healthy controls were studied. The patients and controls underwent proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H MRS), and measures of NAA, CHO, and CRE in hippocampal regions were obtained.

Diagnostic value of leptin in tuberculous pleural effusions.

It is suggested that leptin may be involved in inflammation. Although relation between leptin levels and active pulmonary tuberculosis has been studied, there is no information about relation between leptin levels and tuberculous pleural effusions (TPE). We evaluated the diagnostic value of pleural fluid and serum leptin levels in TPE and compared them with adenosine deaminase (ADA).

The value of serum interferon-gamma level in the differential diagnosis of active and inactive pulmonary tuberculosis.

Interferon (IFN)-gamma plays a pivotal role in protective immunity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Elevations of IFN-gamma have been found in the affected lung and bloodstream of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the role of serum IFN-gamma level in the differential diagnosis of active and inactive pulmonary tuberculosis.

[Investigation of vectors for Borrelia burgdorferi and Lyme seropositivity in Sivas region].

The aims of this study were to investigate the presence of vector ticks for Borrelia burgdorferi and to determine the seropositivity of lyme disease in Sivas region of Middle Anatolia. A total of 10,303 ticks were collected and classified at genus level, however, none of them belonged to Ixodes genus, the vector of B. burgdorferi.

Refractoriness to rituximab monotherapy in a child with relapsed/refractory Burkitt non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The authors describe a 6-year-old boy diagnosed with mediastinal Burkitt lymphoma with tumor invasion into bone marrow and both kidneys. After receiving chemotherapy according to NHL BFM-95 protocol for the high-risk disseminated lymphoma, the patient reached complete remission. He relapsed in the mediastinum at 5 months from the diagnosis.

Extrapleural hematoma: when is surgery indicated?

Extrapleural haematoma (EH) is a rare clinical condition of which four cases are presented. Different etiologies were encountered. Identical findings were found on the chest X-ray.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis with nephrocutanous fistula and coexisting renal replacement lipomatosis: the report of a rare case.

Renal replacement lipomatosis (RRL) is the result of rare, usually unilateral, and severe atrophy and destruction of the renal parenchyma often caused by renal calculi. It may be associated with, sometimes, aging, atrophy, long-standing chronic inflammation and urinary infection, such as renal tuberculosis. We report magnetic resonance (MR) and computed tomography (CT) findings of our case, which has xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) and RRL additionally associated with nephrocutanous fistula.

The expression of bcl-2 in chronic liver diseases.

Objective: Bcl-2 is an oncogene that prevents apoptosis (programmed cell death). Expression of bcl-2 protein has been reported in association with a variety of human tumors.

Methods: This study was conducted in the Department of Gastroenterology and Pathology, Faculty of Medicine Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey during the period 1996 to 2000 on formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue specimens of 69 liver biopsy with chronic liver disease.

Intestinal lymphangiectasia as a first manifestation of neuroblastoma.

In this report we describe an unusual case of neuroblastoma that presented with an initial manifestation of protein losing enteropathy secondary to intestinal lymphangiectasia.

A very rare entity: catamenial pneumothorax.

Catamenial pneumothorax, a variant of spontaneous pneumothorax occurs exclusively in women of menstrual age. Catamenial pneumothorax is associated with a high rate of recurrence. The etiology and pathogenesis is enigmatic.

[Vascular endothelial growth factor in benign and malignant pleural effusions].

Objective: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent inducer of capillary permeability and its role as a crucial mediator in pleural fluid formation has been established. This study was conducted to assess the usefulness of VEGF for diagnosing malignant and non-malignant pleural effusions of various causes.

Patients And Methods: VEGF levels in pleural effusions collected from 52 patients (20 with malignant effusion, 12 with tuberculous effusion, 10 with transudative effusion, and 10 with parapneumonic effusion) were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Sonographic evaluation of plantar fasciitis and relation to body mass index.

Purpose: We have investigated the role of sonography in the diagnosis of plantar fasciitis.

Materials And Methods: This study evaluates 39 patients with plantar fasciitis and control group of 22 healthy volunteers. The plantar fascia thickness was measured 5 mm distal to the insertion of the calcaneus of plantar aponeurosis.

Severe esophagitis in a child with Henoch-Schönlein purpura presenting as protein-losing enteropathy.

A 4-year-old boy was seen for vomiting, diarrhea and peripheral edema. He had no evidence of nephrosis or liver dysfunction. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed for investigating the etiology of protein-losing enteropathy.

Resuscitation failure due to Fraser syndrome in a newborn undiagnosed in the prenatal period.

Long segment laryngo-tracheal atresia is rare, and is usually incompatible with life in neonates. We report a case of an infant with Fraser syndrome that had not been diagnosed in the prenatal period who presented with impossible intubation due to severe long segment laryngeal atresia in the delivery room. Antenatal diagnostic features of Fraser syndrome and emergency airway management are discussed.

P21 and Bax expression in cutaneous malignant melanomas: correlation with histologic prognostic parameters.

In response to DNA damage, p53 accumulates and regulates expression of several genes, including cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21. Cells then undergo p21 dependent cell cycle arrest, which allows DNA damage repair and apoptosis. Bax is a death promoter member of the bcl-2 family which plays a central role in the regulation and commitment to programmed cell death.

Mitomycin C prevents strictures in caustic esophageal burns in rats.

Background: Caustic esophageal injuries lead to stricture formation. Although a number of agents have been tried experimentally to prevent strictures, few have gained clinical application. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Mitomycin C (MMC), which inhibits fibroblastic proliferation in preventing caustic esophageal strictures.

Cystic lymphangioma confined to mediastinum in an adult.

Mediastinal lymphangiomas are very rare tumors among the slow-growing mediastinal masses in the literature. We present the successful resection of a 52-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital. Past medical history consisted of surgical treatment for cervical mass and pathological diagnosis of lymphoma nine years earlier.
