Alzheimer's disease is a chronic complex neurodegenerative disease characterized with amyloid plaques and loss of neurons. TGF-β1 is important growth factor, plays critical roles in cell metabolism, tissue homeostasis, neuronal development, and synaptic plasticity. In this study, we aimed to examine the effect of TGF-β1 on the regulation of α, β, and γ-secretase enzymes, Aβ-40 accumulation, apoptosis, and neuronal damage in an experimental Scopolamine-induced AD-like model.

Investigation of the effect of perioperative parathyroid autotransplantation in incidental parathyroidectomy cases on the development of postoperative hypocalcemia: a retrospective observational study.

Purpose: One of the most common and significant complications following thyroid surgery is postoperative hypocalcemia due to postoperative hypoparathyroidism. This study aimed to observe the effect of parathyroid gland autotransplantation on postoperative hypocalcemia in cases of incidental parathyroidectomy in total thyroidectomy cases.

Methods: Patients who underwent bilateral total thyroidectomy surgery were retrospectively analyzed.

Understanding Risk Factors for Cytomegalovirus Infection in Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: Insights From a 10-Year Study Comparing Conditioning Regimens.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a curative therapy for pediatric patients with malignancies and blood or immune system disorders. However, recipients are at risk of opportunistic infections, including cytomegalovirus infection, due to immunosuppression from conditioning regimens. This retrospective study analyzed 439 pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients to identify risk factors for cytomegalovirus infection and assess the impact of conditioning regimens.

Endotracheal Surfactant and Budesonide Combination Therapy in Neonatal Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome due to Late-Onset Sepsis.

Background: Neonatal acute respiratory distress syndrome (NARDS) is an important cause of hypoxemic respiratory failure. This study aimed to investigate the short-term effects of endotracheal surfactant and budesonide combination therapy on NARDS secondary to late-onset neonatal sepsis (LONS).

Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional, and observational study.

Purpose: To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and long-term outcomes of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) with bleomycin-Lipiodol for giant liver hemangiomas.

Materials And Methods: Single-center retrospective study from 1998 to January 2020, including patients with giant liver hemangiomas treated with bleomycin-Lipiodol TACE and followed up >36 months. The exclusion criteria were defined as patients who had been treated but had no available follow-up above 3 years and patients who had previously been treated with any other treatment method.

Investigation of the biological activity and toxicity of bioactive silver nanoparticles synthesized via Vitex agnus-castus seed extract on honey bees.

In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) coated with bioactive molecules were synthesized via Vitex agnus-castus L. (VAC) seed extract (VAC/AgNPs). The synthesized VAC/AgNPs were characterized by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) ultraviolet-visible region spectroscopy (UV-Vis).

Equation-of-motion orbital-optimized coupled-cluster doubles method with the density-fitting approximation: An efficient implementation.

Orbital-optimized coupled-cluster methods are very helpful for theoretical predictions of the molecular properties of challenging chemical systems, such as excited states. In this research, an efficient implementation of the equation-of-motion orbital-optimized coupled-cluster doubles method with the density-fitting (DF) approach, denoted by DF-EOM-OCCD, is presented. The computational cost of the DF-EOM-OCCD method for excitation energies is compared with that of the conventional EOM-OCCD method.

Factors Associated with Post-rewarming Procalcitonin Levels in Newborns with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy.

To determine the factors associated with the procalcitonin levels in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) who received therapeutic hypothermia (TH). The neonates, who had moderate/severe HIE and were treated with TH, were included. The neonates were arranged into 2 groups by procalcitonin (PCT) level after rewarming was completed.

Severe haematological involvement in children with systemic lupus erythematosus and clinical associations.

Objectives: To investigate the severe haematological involvement in children with SLE and assess its clinical associations, treatments, outcome and damage accrual.

Methods: The medical charts of children with SLE in whom haematological involvement was observed were reviewed. Severe haematological indices were defined as autoimmune haemolytic anaemia with a haemoglobin concentration < 8 g/dL, thrombocyte count < 30 000/µL, and neutrophil count < 500/µL.

Introduction: Shed snake skin (SSS) is commonly used empirically in ethnomedicine to treat psoriasis, acne, warts, eczema, scabies, open wounds, hemorrhoids, and glaucoma. Although a few studies exist, SSS extracts' immunological effects have yet to be well described. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory effects of SSS extract on murine lymphocytes and T cells.

Ultrasonographic and histopathological investigation of the effect of N-acetylcysteine on doxorubicin-induced ovarian and uterine toxicity in rats.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the mitigating effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on doxorubicin (DOX)-induced ovarian and uterine toxicity in rats using laboratory tests, ultrasonographic (US) imaging, and histopathology analysis.

Methods: Forty-eight rats were divided into six groups (n = 8) as follows: Group A (control) (0.5 mL saline administered intraperitoneally [IP]), Group B (a single 10 mg/kg dose of DOX administered IP on day 1), Group C (a single 10 mg/kg dose of DOX administered IP 24 h before sacrifice), Group D (100 mg/kg of NAC administered IP for 21 days), Group E ( a single 10 mg/kg dose of DOX administered IP on day 1 and 100 mg/kg of NAC administered IP for 21 days), and Group F (100 mg/kg of NAC administered IP for 21 days and a single 10 mg/kg dose of DOX administered IP 24 h before sacrifice).

Clinicopathologic Analysis and Prognostic Factors for Survival in Patients with Operable Ampullary Carcinoma: A Multi-Institutional Retrospective Experience.

In ampullary cancer, 5-year survival rates are 30-50%, even with optimal resection and perioperative systemic therapies. We sought to determine the important clinicopathological features and adjuvant treatments in terms of the prognosis of patients with operable-stage ampullary carcinomas. We included 197 patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy to treat ampullary carcinomas between December 2003 and May 2019.

COVID-19 disease in children and adolescents following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: A report from the Turkish pediatric bone marrow transplantation study group.

Background: Data on the risk factors and outcomes for pediatric patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are limited.

Objectives: The study aimed to analyze the clinical signs, risk factors, and outcomes for ICU admission and mortality in a large pediatric cohort who underwent allogeneic HSCT prior to COVID-19 infection.

Method: In this nationwide study, we retrospectively reviewed the data of 184 pediatric HSCT recipients who had COVID-19 between March 2020 and August 2022.

Background: Stathmin is a phosphoprotein that plays a role in intercellular and intracellular signaling, inflammation, and differentiation. Our aim was to evaluate the stathmin-2 level and its relationship with the metabolic parameters of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (nT2DM) patients.

Material And Method: This case-control study included 76 patients with nT2DM and 76 healthy individuals with a normal oral glucose tolerance test who were matched for body mass index (BMI), age, and gender.

Effect of mobile food environments on fast food visits.

Poor diets are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Exposure to low-quality food environments saturated with fast food outlets is hypothesized to negatively impact diet. However, food environment research has predominantly focused on static food environments around home neighborhoods and generated mixed findings.

Relationship of Serum Kallistatin Level With Arterial Stiffness and Metabolic Parameters in Obesity-Related Chronic Kidney Disease.

Objectives: We investigated the relationship between serum kallistatin and kidney disease and proteinuria in nondiabetic obesity-related chronic kidney disease and observed the effects on arterial stiffness.

Materials And Methods: We included 40 patients with nondiabetic obesity-related chronic kidney disease followed in our nephrology clinic and a control group of 40 participants without chronic kidney disease matched by age, sex, and mean body mass index (measured as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared). Pulse-wave velocity and augmentation index were measured oscillometrically by pulse-wave analysis (Mobil-O-Graph) by the same operator.

Background: Epiregulin is a molecule that plays a role in cell proliferation, tumor development, inflammation, and angiogenesis in malignant diseases.
