Background: Several studies have highlighted the negative clinical impact of malnutrition in individuals with various disease conditions, including diseases related to the respiratory system. Our study sought to investigate the relationship between protein-energy malnutrition and asthma exacerbation.

Methods: We retrospectively searched the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) from 2018-2021.

Unlabelled: We present the case of a 61-year-old male with a past medical history of diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), who developed a rapidly growing lung mass after previously having no radiographic evidence of cancer 6 months earlier. The patient initially presented for what appeared to be a COPD exacerbation, and imaging at that time showed no sign of any lung mass. Six months later, the patient returned with dyspnea and was found to have a large lobulated lung mass, possibly extending into the mediastinum.

Article Synopsis
  • * An analysis of over 1 million PE patients from 2016-2021 showed that 12.4% had AF, with those patients displaying significantly higher inpatient mortality (6.05% vs 2.75%) and increased complications like cardiac arrest and respiratory failure.
  • * The presence of AF also led to longer hospital stays (5.66 days vs 4.18 days) and higher hospital costs ($65,235 vs $50,118), indicating a serious negative effect on

Article Synopsis
  • Vanishing lung syndrome (VLS) is a rare form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) primarily affecting middle-aged smokers, as illustrated by a case of a 58-year-old female smoker who developed spontaneous pneumothorax.
  • This patient experienced worsening shortness of breath, leading to the discovery of a right-sided pneumothorax and extensive bullous disease, which was treated with a pigtail catheter.
  • Following treatment, she faced complications including massive subcutaneous emphysema, which was resolved by repositioning the catheter, emphasizing the need for quick diagnosis and management of VLS-related complications.

Article Synopsis
  • - Recent research indicates that patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) face an increased risk of diabetes, but how IBD affects outcomes in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) patients was previously unclear.
  • - An analysis of data from the National Inpatient Sample Database revealed no significant differences in mortality or major complications between patients with DKA alone and those with both DKA and IBD.
  • - However, the presence of IBD resulted in longer hospital stays and higher healthcare costs for DKA patients, indicating that while it doesn't worsen clinical outcomes, it does lead to increased resource use.

Objectives Numerous previous studies investigated the impact of medical training settings on outcomes of hospitalized patients. However, the impact of teaching hospital status on outcomes of percutaneous paracentesis, to the best of our knowledge, has never been studied before. Methods Hospitalized patients who underwent percutaneous paracentesis were identified from the National Inpatient Sample database from 2016 to 2019 across the United States (US) teaching and non-teaching hospitals.

BACKGROUND Staphylococcus aureus (SA) is a rare cause of prostatic abscess. Risk factors include genito-urinary instrumentalization and immunocompromised states. Because of the lack of guidelines on the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of SA prostate abscess, the diagnosis can sometimes be challenging.

Introduction: Several studies identified a link between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). GERD is a condition in which acid reflux from the stomach to the esophagus causes troublesome symptoms. On the other hand, OSA is defined as a sleep-related breathing disorder in which airflow significantly decreases or ceases due to upper airway obstruction, leading to arousal from sleep.

BACKGROUND Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening syndrome of systemic hyper-inflammation, caused by an excessive cytokine secretion, secondary to an uncontrolled proliferation of lymphocytes and macrophages, and leading to vascular endothelial injury and multi-organ failure. HLH is either primary/familial due to genetic mutations in the genes coding for the CD8+ and NK T cells cytotoxic proteins or is secondary to infection, malignancy, or autoimmune disorders. Timely diagnosis using the HLH-2004 criteria and prompt initiation of treatment for HLH is essential for the survival of affected patients.
