Background: Antimicrobial stewardship supports rational antibiotic use. However, balancing access to antibiotic treatment while controlling resistance is challenging. This research used a threshold logistic modeling approach to identify targets for antibiotic usage associated with carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumonia, and extended-spectrum β-lactamases-producing Escherichia coli incidence in hospitals.

Background: This study was aimed to explore thresholds with interaction effects among antibiotic usage, covariates (alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR)), and their effect on extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae) in hospitalized patients.

Methods: Multivariate Adaptive Regression Spline models were used.

Solutions are needed to inform antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) regarding balancing the access to effective antimicrobials with the need to control antimicrobial resistance. Theoretical and mathematical models suggest a non-linear relationship between antibiotic use and resistance, indicating the existence of thresholds of antibiotic use beyond which resistance would be triggered. It is anticipated that thresholds may vary across populations depending on host, environment, and organism factors.

Phaeohyphomycosis, previously known as chromoblastomycosis, is a chronic mycosis, usually affecting the skin. It is caused by dematiaceous fungi, which are a group of fungi that produce melanin in their cell walls. Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis occurs as a part of invasive presentation of the fungi, which usually affects immunocompromised patients, but may affect immunocompetent individuals as well.

There are currently no reliable epidemiological data for estimating the burden of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Oman. STIs such as gonorrhoea and chlamydia are often asymptomatic and associated with sexual and reproductive morbidity. An exploratory study was conducted in an antenatal clinic in Muscat, Oman, to assess the acceptability and feasibility of testing for gonorrhoea and chlamydia.

Brain abscess is a potentially life-threatening condition requiring rapid diagnosis and prompt medical and surgical intervention. Various etiological agents associated with different epidemiological backgrounds are implicated, including Gram-positive and Gram- negative bacterial agents as well as anaerobes. Salmonella is rarely reported to be the cause of this medical condition despite being known to cause invasive infections at extremes of age and the fact that this organism is a common cause of other clinical infectious diseases encountered in immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals.
