The synergistic effect of natural guar gum (GG), konjac gum (KGM) and sodium 2-oxopropanoic acid sodium (2-OAS) to designed a novel physical cross-linked three-dimensional network structure GG@2-OAS@KGM as a carrier of active microorganisms for mold and yeast sensitive detection. At the ratio of 6:2:2 (w/w/w), GG@2-OAS@KGM possessed a uniform porous structure. After treatment for 120 h, the hydrogel exhibits higher water holding capacity (WHC, 71.

Article Synopsis
  • Recurrent hyperkalemia (HK) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is linked to significantly higher risks of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular (CV) issues compared to patients with normal potassium levels.
  • The study involved matching 6,337 patients with recurrent HK to those with normokalemia, adjusting for relevant factors, to ensure a fair comparison.
  • Findings indicated that recurrent HK is particularly detrimental, increasing risks for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE+) and hospitalizations due to arrhythmias, affecting both the overall CKD population and those with co-occurring heart failure.

Background: This real-world evidence study compared risks of cardiovascular events in hospital settings among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) with and without hyperkalemia.

Methods And Results: Adults with CKD stages 3b/4 with and without hyperkalemia were identified from Optum's deidentified Market Clarity Data (January 2016-August 2022). Patients with hyperkalemia were exact and propensity score matched to patients without hyperkalemia.

This study evaluated comparative overall survival (OS) of United States veterans with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) receiving first-line (1L) atezolizumab plus bevacizumab vs. sorafenib or lenvatinib, overall and across racial and ethnic groups. In this retrospective study, patients with uHCC who initiated atezolizumab plus bevacizumab (post-2020) or sorafenib or lenvatinib (post-2018) were identified from the Veterans Health Administration National Corporate Data Warehouse (1 January 2017-31 December 2022).

Introduction: Veterans in the US have higher rates of lower extremity amputation (LEA) compared to the general population and these rates have increased between 2008 and 2018. There is limited data which directly evaluate the potential underlying comorbidities associated with LEA in the veterans' population especially with the most recent data. Such information is critical to help inform clinical management strategies to reduce the risk of amputations among our veterans.

In soccer, player scouting aims to find players suitable for a team to increase the winning chance in future matches. To scout suitable players, coaches and analysts need to consider whether the players will perform well in a new team, which is hard to learn directly from their historical performances. Match simulation methods have been introduced to scout players by estimating their expected contributions to a new team.

Article Synopsis
  • A specific type of regulatory B cells in newborns (nBreg) uses IL-10 to limit the production of IgM antibodies, which helps control the immune response after initial activation.
  • *By analyzing these nBreg cells in fetal and neonatal intestines, researchers identified their antibody repertoire and demonstrated that they produce antibodies that react to various bacteria in the early microbiota.
  • *This study suggests that nBreg populations are crucial for shaping the microbiome during early life by influencing bacterial diversity and metabolism.*

Key Points: Hyperkalemia is a known complication of CKD; however, it is not known whether hyperkalemia directly contributes to CKD progression and risk of death. We found that patients with stages 3b/4 CKD and hyperkalemia had higher risk of CKD progression and death than matched patients without hyperkalemia.

Background: Hyperkalemia is a known complication of CKD; however, it is not known whether hyperkalemia directly contributes to CKD progression and the risk of death.

Background: Hyperkalemia is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and can become recurrent in half of cases. However, the incremental economic burden associated with recurrent hyperkalemia is unknown.

Objective: To evaluate all-cause health care resource utilization (HRU) and medical costs in patients with stage 3/4 CKD with recurrent hyperkalemia vs normokalaemia and vs nonrecurrent hyperkalemia.

Buried pipelines are widely used, so it is necessary to analyze and study their fracture characteristics. The locations of corrosion defects on the pipe are more susceptible to fracture under the influence of internal pressure generated during material transportation. In the open literature, a large number of studies have been conducted on the failure pressure or residual strength of corroded pipelines.

Mycoviruses have been found in various fungal species across different taxonomic groups, while no viruses have been reported yet in the fungus In this study, a novel orfanplasmovirus, namely Exserohilum rostratum orfanplasmovirus 1 (ErOrfV1), was identified in the strain JZ1 from maize leaf. The complete genome of ErOrfV1 consists of two positive single-stranded RNA segments, encoding an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and a hypothetical protein with unknown function, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that ErOrfV1 clusters with other orfanplasmoviruses, forming a distinct phyletic clade.

Background: Although the benefits of antiviral therapy for hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have been proven, researchers have not confirmed the differences in patient outcomes between patients who received preoperative antiviral therapy for a period of time (at least 24 wk) and patients who received remedial antiviral therapy just before radical resection for HBV-related HCC.

Aim: To investigate the efficacy of perioperative remedial antiviral therapy in patients with HBV-related HCC.

Methods: A retrospective study of patients who underwent radical resection for HBV-related HCC at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University from January 2016 to June 2019 was conducted.

The global football market has grown in the past three decades, and football clubs' sustainable financial operations have gradually gained attention. This study aims to construct a financial risk assessment model applicable to the football industry, explore globally listed football clubs' overall financial operating characteristics, and analyse the leading causes of the club's financial crisis. We selected a sample of 24 currently listed football clubs worldwide and an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) model to construct the model of financial risk assessment for football clubs.

Background And Aim: Benralizumab is a biologic add-on treatment for severe eosinophilic asthma that can reduce the rate of asthma exacerbations, but data on the associated medical utilization are scarce. This retrospective study evaluated the economic value of benralizumab by analyzing healthcare resource utilization (HRU) and medical costs in a large patient population in the US.

Methods: Insurance claims data (11/2016-6/2020) were analyzed.

Omadacycline is an amino-methylcycline antibiotic that is indicated for the treatment of adults with community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) and acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI). Like many new antibiotics, there are scant real-world effectiveness data for omadacycline. There is also a high potential that an omadacycline prescription is rejected or reversed, and it is not known whether patients who have an unapproved omadacycline claim are at higher risk for 30-day emergency department (ED)/inpatient (IP) visits.

Introduction: Hyperkalemia (HK) may result in disruptions of guidelines-concordant renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASi), a standard of care in persons with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Such disruptions-dose reduction or discontinuation-diminish the benefits of RAASi, placing patients at risk of serious events and renal dysfunction. This real-world study evaluated RAASi modifications among patients who initiated sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) for HK.

  • The study looked at how levels of sex hormones in premenopausal women relate to the risk of developing endometriosis, using data from the Nurses' Health Study II.
  • Higher levels of early follicular-phase estradiol were linked to an increased risk of endometriosis, showing a nonlinear relationship across various hormone levels.
  • Free testosterone didn’t show a strong link to endometriosis risk, except in women with very high levels, indicating that the effects of sex steroids on endometriosis might be more complicated than previously thought.
