Contained Power Morcellation in Laparoscopic Uterine Myoma Surgeries: A Brief Review.

Numerical Analysis of Dynamic Properties of an Auxetic Structure with Rotating Squares with Holes.

In this paper, a novel auxetic structure with rotating squares with holes is investigated. The unit cell of the structure consists of four units in the shape of a square with cut corners and holes. Finally, the structure represents a kind of modified auxetic structure made of rotating squares with holes or sheets of material with regularly arranged diamond and square cuts.

Although recent studies indicate a significant association with gynecologic malignancies, many underlying principles remain unclear. This work aimed to systematically describe the intraoperative appearance of endosalpingiosis.

Considerations on the Systematics of Neotropical Pierina, with the Description of Two New Species of Phulia Herrich-Schäffer from the Peruvian Andes (Lepidoptera: Pieridae, Pierinae, Pierini).

A comparative analysis of high-Andean Pierina was carried out, including a total of 25 species. Based on morphological evidence, with an emphasis on venation and genitalia and molecular data, using three genetic markers, we confirm the recent subjective synonymy of the generic names Tatochila Butler, 1870, Piercolias, Staudinger, 1894, Hypsochila Ureta, 1955, Infraphulia Field, 1958, Pierphulia Field, 1958, and Theochila Field, 1958 with Phulia Herrich-Schäffer, 1867. Two new species are described, namely Phulia stoddardi Pyrcz & Cerdeña n.

Drug resistance to front-line malarial treatments represents an ongoing threat to control malaria, a vector borne infectious disease. The malarial parasite, has developed genetic variants, conferring resistance to the current standard therapeutic artemisinin and its derivatives commonly referred to as artemisinin-combination therapies (ACTs). Emergence of multi-drug resistance parasite genotypes is a warning of potential treatment failure, reaffirming the urgent and critical need to find and validate alternate drug targets to prevent the spread of disease.

The restriction-modification (RM) systems are compared to a primitive, innate, prokaryotic immune system, controlling the invasion by foreign DNA, composed of methyltransferase (MTase) and restriction endonuclease. The biological significance of RM systems extends beyond their defensive function, but the data on the regulatory role of Type I MTases are limited. We have previously characterized molecularly a non-canonical Type I RM system, NgoAV, with phase-variable specificity, encoded by FA1090.

Frequency of Positive Familial Criteria in Patients with Adenocarcinoma of the Esophageal-Gastric Junction and Stomach: First Prospective Data in a Caucasian Cohort.

Objectives: Current prospective studies investigating the frequency of hereditary criteria in a Caucasian population for adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (AEG) and stomach (GC) are missing. Genetic testing criteria (screening criteria) for hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) were updated in 2020, but do not address patients with intestinal histology (familial intestinal gastric cancer FIGC). Thus, we prospectively screened patients residing in Berlin newly diagnosed with AEG or GC for hereditary criteria to gain insights into the frequency of HDGC.

The 2019 Coronavirus Pandemic challenges the delivery of care for patients with head and neck cancer. An important aspect of this care has been the evolution of enhanced survivorship services, which include surveillance for recurring cancer and prevention of second primaries. The application of evidence-based approaches to the identification and management of treatment and tumor-related toxicities has embraced the use of validated patient-reported outcomes instruments, health promotion, and care coordination.

Mechanical Properties of Monolayer MoS with Randomly Distributed Defects.

The variation of elastic constants stiffness coefficients with respect to different percentage ratios of defects in monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MLMoS) is reported for a particular set of atomistic nanostructural characteristics. The common method suggested is to use conventional defects such as single vacancy or di vacancy, and the recent studies use stone-walled multiple defects for highlighting the differences in the mechanical and electronic properties of 2D materials. Modeling the size influence of monolayer MoS by generating defects which are randomly distributed for a different percentage from 0% to 25% is considered in the paper.

Type III Methyltransferase M.NgoAX from Neisseria gonorrhoeae FA1090 Regulates Biofilm Formation and Interactions with Human Cells.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the etiological factor of the sexually transmitted gonorrhea disease that may lead, under specific conditions, to systemic infections. The gonococcal genome encodes many restriction modification (RM) systems, which main biological role is to defend the pathogen from potentially harmful foreign DNA. However, RM systems seem also to be involved in several other functions.

Synthesis and in vitro antiproliferative activity of 5-alkyl-12(H)-quino[3,4-b] [1,4]benzothiazinium salts.

A novel method of synthesizing 1,4-thiazine ring has led to the series of 5-alkyl-12(H)-quino[3,4-b][1,4]benzothiazinium salts. The derivatives containing a butyl or decyl substituents on the quinoline nitrogen atom were obtained by alkylation of 12(H)-quino[3,4-b][1,4]benzothiazine with alkyl bromides. Antiproliferative activity in vitro of the compounds (3) was assessed using two cancer cell lines (Hct116 and LLC) and doxorubicin as a reference.

Structure-activity relationship in binding ligands to library of artificial receptors: the search for biocompatible sensor.

Structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis was applied for studies of docking of colored ligands to library of artificial receptors formed by self-assembly of N-lipidated amino acids immobilised on the cellulose support. The studies show that the binding depends mainly on the structure of amino acid fragment but influence of N-lipidic fragment is less important.

Investigating the activity spectrum for ring-substituted 8-hydroxyquinolines.

In this study, a series of fourteen ring-substituted 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives were prepared. The synthesis procedures are presented. The compounds were analyzed using RP-HPLC to determine lipophilicity.

Harm or benefit of hormonal treatment in metastatic low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma: single center experience with 10 cases and review of the literature.

Unlabelled: Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is a rare disease with probably less than 700 new cases in the US or EU per year. ESS usually expresses steroidal receptors and is regarded to be hormone-sensitive. A higher risk in women receiving estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) or tamoxifen has been suspected, and remissions following treatment with progestins have been reported in case studies.

Multidomain Bcl-2 homolog Bax but not Bak mediates synergistic induction of apoptosis by TRAIL and 5-FU through the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway.

The death ligand TRAIL synergizes with DNA-damaging therapies such as chemotherapeutic drugs or ionizing irradiation. Here, we show that the synergism of TRAIL and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and cross-sensitization between TRAIL and 5-FU for induction of apoptosis, entirely depend on Bax proficiency in human DU145 and HCT116 carcinoma cells. DU145 prostate carcinoma cells that have lost Bax protein expression due to mutation fail to release cytochrome c and to activate caspase-3 and -9 when exposed to TRAIL and 5-FU.

[Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST)].

The vast majority of mesenchymal tumors originating from the GI tract consists of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), an entity just recently defined. The incidence is estimated to be around 10 - 20/1000000, the median age at diagnosis has been reported to be 55 to 65 years. Combined p53/Bax mutation results in extremely poor prognosis in gastric carcinoma with low microsatellite instability.

Gastric cancer is highly refractory to DNA-damaging therapies. We therefore studied both gene mutation and protein expression of p53 and Bax in a cohort of 116 patients with gastric cancer who underwent R0-resection with a curative intent. Bax mutation was independent from severe microsatellite instability (MSI), that is, global mismatch repair deficiency as determined by analysis of BAT-25/BAT-26 microsatellite markers.
