Article Synopsis
  • The Sydney system was developed to improve standardization and reproducibility in lymph node cytopathology, with previous studies focusing on its risk of malignancy but not on how consistently different pathologists can interpret it.
  • A study involving 15 cytopathologists from 12 institutions globally evaluated 85 cases using digital whole-slide images, resulting in over 1200 diagnoses.
  • The findings indicated nearly perfect agreement with a ground truth for most diagnoses, but varying levels of concordance across categories, with the inadequate and malignant categories showing the most agreement, while suspicious and atypical categories had very slight agreement.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has emerged as a pandemic for more than 2 years. Autopsy examination is an invaluable tool to understand the pathogenesis of emerging infections and their consequent mortalities. The aim of the current study was to present the lung and heart pathological findings of COVID-19-positive autopsies performed in Jordan.

Athletes competing in Taekwondo (TKD), the weight-category sport, tend to rapidly lose weight to achieve the desired body weight for better competitive results. Little is known about the effect of rapid weight reduction on bone mass density (BMD), especially during childhood and adolescence. The current study aimed to investigate the impact of rapid weight loss on BMD among cadets and juniors TKD athletes.

Article Synopsis
  • Biliary amputation neuroma is a rare condition that's hard to diagnose before surgery, often because its symptoms vary widely and many healthcare providers aren't familiar with it.
  • A case is presented where the neuroma developed after laparoscopic cholecystectomy, leading to complications like bile leaks and recurrent cholangitis.
  • The literature review highlights the causes, patient demographics, symptoms, and timing of diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between benign and malignant biliary issues during assessments.

Systemic lymphohistiocytic infiltration is a rare peculiar condition that can raise the possibility of more specific entities such as autoimmune disease, drug interaction, viral or mycobacterial infection, or malignancy. A hyper-inflammatory state can ensue leading to multi-organ failure. We report the case of a 42-year-old Jordanian male with a past history of moderate Covid-19 infection presenting with binocular diplopia and acute loss of vision in the left eye.

The stigmatizing attitude towards people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) can be a major barrier to effective patient care. As future physicians, medical students represent a core group that should be targeted with focused knowledge and adequate training to provide patient care without prejudice. The aim of the current study was to examine HIV/AIDS knowledge, and the stigmatizing attitude towards PLWHA, among medical students in Jordan.

Cervical cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in women worldwide. The availability of prophylactic vaccines for high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection represents an important advancement in the prevention of cervical cancer. In Jordan, the availability of the HPV vaccination is restricted to individuals who are willing to pay.

Objectives: The 2015 American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines called for significantly more selective I therapy in patients with low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). We hypothesized that application of these guidelines would significantly reduce the I activity utilized by an academic tertiary hospital in Jordan.

Methods: All DTC patients managed at Jordan University Hospital (JUH) between 1/2009 and 6/2019 were classified according to the 2015 ATA risk category and I activity was assigned accordingly.

Introduction: Intravesical chemotherapy instillation immediately after tumor resection is a well-known practice in the management of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. Despite being largely well tolerated in most cases, it is not devoid of severe and life-threatening complications.

Case Presentation: We present an unusual case of bladder perforation that happened 2 weeks after bladder tumor resection.

Background: The evaluation of lymph nodes (LN) by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is routinely used in many institutions but it is not uniformly accepted mainly because of the lack of guidelines and a cytopathological diagnostic classification. A committee of cytopathologists has developed a system of performance, classification, and reporting for LN-FNAC.

Methods: The committee members prepared a document that has circulated among them five times; the final text has been approved by all the participants.

Objective: Noninvasive follicular neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) is the term to describe what was previously known as encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma. This new paradigm shift was agreed upon by experts in the field. The objective of this study is to evaluate cases previously diagnosed as follicular adenomas, follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma and hyperplastic nodules to be reclassified as NIFTP according to the new criteria.

  • The Ni-free Ti-16Nb-3Mo-1Sn superelastic alloy was tested for biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo, comparing its performance to commercial purity titanium (cp-Ti).
  • Both materials showed stable corrosion behavior, but the alloy exhibited better hydrophilic properties that enhance cell attachment, as confirmed by cytocompatibility tests.
  • In vivo studies with BALB/c rats indicated similar tissue reactions for both materials after 12 weeks, suggesting the alloy could be a safer alternative to nickel-containing biomedical materials.

Astroblastoma (AB) is a rare CNS tumor demonstrating abundant astroblastomatous pseudorosettes. Its molecular features have not been comprehensively studied and its status as a tumor entity is controversial. We analyzed a cohort of 27 histologically-defined ABs using DNA methylation profiling, copy number analysis, FISH and site-directed sequencing.

BACKGROUND Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a common cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults, which can be primary, or secondary to various causes. Unlike membranous nephropathy, FSGS is less likely to be associated with malignancy. Few cases have been reported of the occurrence of FSGS with hematological malignancies like multiple myeloma (MM).

We are reporting an unusual case of lymphoepithelial-like carcinoma (LELC) in an 8-year-old female patient where the tumor cells showed unusual CD4 expression. The lesion was found in the left submandibular neck region, in the vicinity of the submandibular gland. The salivary gland was not infiltrated by the tumor, and the tumor exhibited a classic LELC with single and clusters of tumor cells surrounded by many hematolymphoid cells.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed thyroid aspirate cases labeled as atypia of undetermined significance (AUS/FLUS) and follicular neoplasm (FN/SFN) using the Bethesda system across three institutions in the Arabian Gulf Region.
  • A total of 2592 fine-needle aspirates were evaluated, revealing AUS/FLUS in 4.4% and FN/SFN in 1.5%, with follow-up procedures performed on 27% and 7% of patients in each category.
  • The malignancy risk was determined to be 29% for AUS/FLUS and 45% for FN/SFN, indicating a higher risk compared to existing literature.
