Purpose: To identify the skills and personality profiles that are most expected by ophthalmology patients and to help ophthalmologists and ophthalmology residents improve their communication with patients and thus their quality of care.

Methods: This prospective, single-center study was carried out from November 2nd, 2020, to April 30th, 2021 in the ophthalmology department of Strasbourg University Hospital (Strasbourg, France). One thousand one hundred and eighty-three volunteer ophthalmology outpatients participated in the study.

Article Synopsis
  • - Orbital cellulitis is a rare but serious eye condition, often linked to sinus infections, particularly in the ethmoidal region.
  • - Effective management requires a tailored approach based on clinical evaluation and diagnostic tests, prioritizing proactive treatment to protect important functions and health.
  • - A thorough clinical examination and urgent CT scan are crucial for diagnosing the severity of orbital cellulitis and deciding if surgery is needed alongside antibiotics.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores how Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is managed across 26 medical centers in France, focusing on the structure and availability of treatment services.
  • Researchers contacted 28 centers to gather data through a questionnaire about multidisciplinary meetings, dedicated services, and treatment methods.
  • The findings revealed that while a majority have dedicated services and utilize first-line treatments like intravenous corticosteroids, there’s significant variability in practices, highlighting the need for standardization and improving accessibility to new treatments like tocilizumab and teprotumumab.

Introduction: Training novice ophthalmology residents on the EyeSi simulator increases cataract surgery safety. However, there is no consensus regarding how much training residents should perform before their first time on patients. We evaluated the French national training program through the analysis of the learning curves of novice residents.

Purpose: To better characterise the effects of corticosteroids on the course of pure idiopathic orbital inflammation syndrome (pIOIS).

Methods: This was a national, multicentre, prospective, non-interventional cohort study (). Among the 35 patients with histologically proven orbital inflammation who had previously been studied for their IgG4 immunostaining status, we selected those with a negative IgG4 status (ie, pIOIS) who received corticosteroids as single first-line treatment.

The retraction of publications is a crucial aspect of scientific integrity; it aims to correct the literature and alert scholars and the general public by identifying and labelling articles that contain erroneous data, unreliable findings, or flawed conclusions. Identifying and characterizing retracted articles within the scientific literature is thus very important. The aims of this article were to characterize retracted articles in the ophthalmological literature.

Purpose: High doses of venous corticosteroids are currently the only validated treatment for the management of optic neuritis (ON). The objective is to assess the changes in visual function parameters after oral high-dose methylprednisolone in patients with ON.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of patients with acute ON was performed.

Purpose: Uveal melanoma (UM) is a deadly cancer with limited therapeutic options. At advanced stages, UM cells metastasize almost exclusively into the liver, where targeting metastatic UM cells remain a clinical challenge. Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) exhibits a functional duality in cancer, with one arm limiting tumor growth at an early stage and the second arm promoting metastasis at an advanced stage, notably by inducing an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition.

Background: Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) represent 90% of malignant tumors of the eyelids, which can be locally invasive and destructive. The observation of histological safety margins (MHS) allows for the prevention of recurrence while maintaining a fair compromise between aesthetics and functionality. However, to date, there is no consensus or national recommendations concerning the MHS to be observed according to the various histological subtypes of BCCs.

Introduction: Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed in France. While the incidence of intraoperative complications affecting visual prognosis is extremely low, given the large number of patients operated on, the absolute number of patients affected by complications is quite high. Complication rates are significantly higher when ophthalmology residents (ORs) perform the surgery.

Ganglioside-monosialic acid (GM1) gangliosidosis, a rare autosomal recessive disorder, is frequently caused by deleterious single nucleotide variants (SNVs) in gene. These variants result in reduced β-galactosidase (β-gal) activity, leading to neurodegeneration associated with premature death. Currently, no effective therapy for GM1 gangliosidosis is available.

Article Synopsis
  • * Recent research highlights the role of miR-16 in regulating cancer behavior, showing it interacts with certain RNAs in ways that can unexpectedly increase oncogene expression, which contributes to worse patient outcomes.
  • * The study establishes a new RNA signature based on miR-16 that can effectively predict patient survival, differentiating it from existing methods and suggesting that UM could be specifically classified as a miR-16-related disease.

Purpose: To compare the reliability of office versus remote assessments in the decision to use intravitreal injection for patients with diabetic macular edema (DME).

Method: We retrospectively evaluated office and remote assessments for decision agreement regarding treatment by intravitreal injection or non-treatment for DME. Remote assessment consisted in remote evaluation of patient medical data by three reviewers with different skills.

Aims / Background: Rubella virus-associated uveitis (RVAU) classically presents with the clinical features of Fuchs uveitis syndrome (FUS). We report a series RVAU, and discuss the relevance of available diagnostic strategies, and how vaccination could potentially prevent disease.

Methods: We retrospectively included patients with RV-positive aqueous humor (AH) with RT-PCR and/or intraocular RV-IgG production, between January 2014 and December 2019.
