OBJECT The purpose of this study was to describe complications associated with the endonasal, transsphenoidal approach for the treatment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-positive staining tumors (Cushing's disease [CD] and silent corticotroph adenomas [SCAs]) performed by 1 surgeon at a high-volume academic medical center. METHODS Medical records from Brigham and Women's Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Selected for study were 82 patients with CD who during April 2008-April 2014 had consecutively undergone transsphenoidal resection or who had subsequent pathological confirmation of ACTH-positive tumor staining.

(Myrtaceae) is an antioxidant compounds-rich Brazilian fruit popularly known as . In view of this, it was evaluated the hepatoprotective effects of pulp (GPE) or peel/seed (GPSE) hydroalcoholic extracts of on injured liver-derived HepG2 cells by CCl (4 mM). The results showed the presence of total phenolic in GPSE was (60%) higher when compared to GPE, associated with interesting antioxidant activity using DPPH• assay.

Background: Obesity is a factor for degenerative lumbar spine disease (DLSD), with increasing prevalence worldwide. Consequently, patients who are overweight or obese have benefited from surgical treatment for DLSD, despite their anatomical and clinical differences.

Objectives: To analyse the effect of body mass index (BMI) in spinal surgery for degenerative lumbar spine disease (DLSD).

Acute inflammation and angiogenesis are persistent features of several pathological conditions induced by biological agents leading to the resolution of local and systemic events. Glycoproteins derived from the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi are suggested to mediate angiogenesis induced by inflammatory cells with still undescribed mechanisms. In this study, we investigated the effects of total antigen from trypomastigote forms of T.

Background: In Angola, malaria is an endemic disease having a major impact on the economy. The WHO recommends testing for all suspected malaria cases, to avoid the presumptive treatment of this disease. In malaria endemic regions laboratory technicians must be very comfortable with microscopy, the golden standard for malaria diagnosis, to avoid the incorrect diagnosis.

The clinical and molecular findings of 77 cases of neonatal leukemia (NL) and 380 of infant leukemia (IL) were selected to distinguish features between NL and IL. Somatic gene mutations associated with acute leukemia including FLT3, RAS and PTPN11 were revisited. There were 42 cases of congenital leukemia associated with Down syndrome (DS) and 39 of these cases presented features of acute myeloid leukemia (AML)-M7.

Objective: This study evaluated the effect of air temperature (warm or cold) for solvent evaporation on bonding and nanoleakage of self-etching adhesives to dentin.

Materials And Methods: The adhesives Clearfil 3S Bond [S3], OptiBond All-In-One [OB], Adper SE Plus [AD], and Silorane adhesive [SI] were applied on dentin surfaces, and a warm (60 ± 2°C) or cold air (20 ± 1°C) was applied and light-cured. After water storage (24 h), the teeth were sectioned into sticks (0.

Background: Chronic inflammatory processes in the peritoneal cavity develop as a result of ischemia, foreign body reaction, and trauma. Brazilian green propolis, a beeswax product, has been shown to exhibit multiple actions on inflammation and tissue repair. Our aim was to investigate the effects of this natural product on the inflammatory, angiogenic, and fibrogenic components of the peritoneal fibroproliferative tissue induced by a synthetic matrix.

Background: Despite the involvement of cytokine production in neurotrauma, there is still controversy regarding cytokines levels and clinical outcome following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Objective: The present study was designed to investigate whether cytokine levels (of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70 and TNF-α) are associated with primary outcome (death or survival) after severe TBI.

Methods: This prospective study enrolled 24 male patients, victims of severe TBI.

Objectives: This study evaluated the influence of different exposure times to saliva in situ in comparison with an antioxidant treatment on composite resin bond strength to human enamel restored after tooth bleaching.

Material And Methods: Forty human teeth specimens measuring 5x5 mm were prepared and randomly allocated into 5 groups with 8 specimens each: Gct (control group, restored on unbleached enamel); Gbl (restored immediately after bleaching); Gsa (bleached, treated with 10% sodium ascorbate gel for 60 min and restored); G7d (bleached, exposed to saliva in situ for 7 days and restored); and G14d (bleached, exposed to saliva in situ for 14 days and restored). Restored samples were cut into 0.

Malignant bowel obstruction (MBO) is a well-recognised complication of advanced abdominal and pelvic cancers. Often surgical intervention is not feasible, resulting in complex symptoms and an unpredictable course. Although symptom management is a crucial part of nursing care, psychosocial and emotional issues frequently emerge for patients and families.

This work investigated the use of water extract of green propolis (WEP) and its association with free or liposomal meglumine antimoniate (MA) for the treatment of murine visceral leishmaniasis. Mice infected with Leishmania infantum were treated with oral doses of WEP associated or not with a single dose of liposomal MA by intraperitoneal route. Parasite burden was assessed in the liver and spleen by limiting dilution assay, and alterations in the spleen cellular phenotype were evaluated by flow cytometry.

Chagasic megaoesophagus and megacolon are characterised by motor abnormalities related to enteric nervous system lesions and their development seems to be related to geographic distribution of distinct Trypanosoma cruzi subpopulations. Beagle dogs were infected with Y or Berenice-78 (Be-78) T. cruzi strains and necropsied during the acute or chronic phase of experimental disease for post mortem histopathological evaluation of the oesophagus and colon.

Here we investigated alterations in the protein profile of Hep-2 treated with red propolis using two-dimensional electrophoresis associated to mass spectrometry and apoptotic rates of cells treated with and without red propolis extracts through TUNEL and Annexin-V assays. A total of 325 spots were manually excised from the two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and 177 proteins were identified using LC-MS-MS. Among all proteins identified that presented differential expression, most were down-regulated in presence of red propolis extract at a concentration of 120 μg/mL (IC50): GRP78, PRDX2, LDHB, VIM and TUBA1A.
