High levels and epitope spread by Rheumatoid factors (RhF) and autoantibodies to citrullinated proteins signify progression towards disease expression. The Brazilian endemic scleractinian corals, genus Mussismilia, are among the main reef builders of the South Atlantic and are threatened by accelerating rates of disease. To better understand how holobiont microbial populations interact with corals during health and disease and to evaluate whether selective pressures in the holobiont or neutral assembly shape microbial composition, we have examined the microbiota structure of Mussismilia corals according to coral lineage, environment, and disease/health status. Mevalonate kinase deficiency (MKD) is a rare autosomal disease caused by mutations in the mevalonate kinase gene (MVK). The genotype-phenotype correlation is sometimes problematic due to the great genetic and clinical heterogeneity; so we hypothesize that genes other than MVK are able to modulate MKD clinical phenotypes. This hypothesis was tested by analyzing the exome of 22 patients with MKD all carrying MVK gene mutations, and 20 patients with recurrent fevers (RF) not carrying MVK mutations.

The presence of anti-BSA antibodies may interfere in serological tests, as ELISA or immunochromatographic assays. BSA is frequently used as a blocking agent or as "inert" carrier of antigens, such as the NT-P-BSA, the semi-synthetic trisaccharide analogue of the PGL-I (phenolic glycolipid-I) antigen from the cell wall of the Mycobacterium leprae. PGL-I was prepared and linked to human serum albumin based in the hypothesis that replacing BSA by a human protein carrier would enhance the performance of leprosy serological tests.

Seven new compounds have been synthetized in satisfactory yields (51-78 %) through the treatment of mesoionic 1,3-thiazolium-5-thiolate (4a-d) and 1,3,4-thiadiazolium- 5-thiolate (10a,b) with chloroacetic acid or methyl iodide: 1,3,4-thiadiazolium-5-methylthio- (11) and 5-thioacetate (12). The structure of the title compounds was elucidated by elemental analysis, IR, (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. The newly synthesized compounds 5a, 6a, 11 and 12 were evaluated for their ex vivo spasmolytic potential on four isolated smooth muscles (rat aorta and uterus, guinea pig ileum and trachea) and compared with scopolamine.

In both human and experimental obesity, inflammatory damage to the hypothalamus plays an important role in the loss of the coordinated control of food intake and energy expenditure. Upon prolonged maintenance of increased body mass, the brain changes the defended set point of adiposity, and returning to normal weight becomes extremely difficult. Here we show that in prolonged but not in short-term obesity, the ubiquitin/proteasome system in the hypothalamus fails to maintain an adequate rate of protein recycling, leading to the accumulation of ubiquitinated proteins.

Selective cannulation of the common bile duct can be difficult, so multiple strategies have been developed to overcome the situation. In this review we analize the different strategies that can be used like different papillotome instead of the standard catheter, precut papillotomy using precut needle knives or precut papillotome, transpancreatic papillary septotomy, and stenting of the pancreatic duct. Bile duct cannulation remains an important benchmark of successful ERCP.

In line with global targets agreed under the Convention on Biological Diversity, the number of marine protected areas (MPAs) is increasing rapidly, yet socio-economic benefits generated by MPAs remain difficult to predict and under debate. MPAs often fail to reach their full potential as a consequence of factors such as illegal harvesting, regulations that legally allow detrimental harvesting, or emigration of animals outside boundaries because of continuous habitat or inadequate size of reserve. Here we show that the conservation benefits of 87 MPAs investigated worldwide increase exponentially with the accumulation of five key features: no take, well enforced, old (>10 years), large (>100 km(2)), and isolated by deep water or sand.

Diabetes compromises the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment and reduces the number of circulating CD34(+) cells. Diabetic autonomic neuropathy (DAN) may impact the BM, because the sympathetic nervous system is prominently involved in BM stem cell trafficking. We hypothesize that neuropathy of the BM affects stem cell mobilization and vascular recovery after ischemia in patients with diabetes.
