In 2006, the Brazilian Ministry of Health established the Injury Surveillance System Network in Sentinel Services (Rede VIVA) to describe data on injuries victims treated at emergency departments (ED), especially minor injuries which do not cause deaths and hospitalization. This study describes the characteristics of unintentional injuries victims treated in these EDs by means of a transversal descriptive study with data coming from EDs located in 35 municipalities with the highest injury rates. The data were collected during 30 consecutive days in an alternated 12-hour shift.

This paper describes the synthesis, pharmacological and theoretical evaluations of new 1-arylsulfonylamino-5-methyl-1H-[1,2,3]-triazole-4-carboxylic acid ethyl esters (8a-f) tested against the hemolytic profile of the L. muta snake venom.

The potential for statin therapy in slowing the progression of valvular heart disease is still controversial. Retrospective studies have shown that medical therapy is beneficial for patients with calcific aortic stenosis and recently for rheumatic valve disease.

Methods: We evaluated retrospectively the reports of 9,617 renal biopsies, analyzed by the same pathologist, from January 1993 to December 2007.
Results: The 9,617 renal biopsies performed in subjects of all ages in native kidneys.
The present study investigated the role of swimming training on cerebral metabolism and hippocampus concentrations of insulin and IGF-1 in diabetic rats. Wistar rats were divided in sedentary control (SC), trained control (TC), sedentary diabetic (SD), and trained diabetic (TD). Diabetes was induced by Alloxan (35 mg kg(-1) b.

Samples of serum, feces, and tissues from feral cats from St Kitts, West Indies were examined for T. gondii infection.

In alopecia areata, dermoscopy of active disease shows yellow dots, dystrophic hairs, as well as cadaverized (black dots) and exclamation mark hairs. Alopecia areata has been reported to occur equally among races, however, until date, there are no published data regarding dermoscopic findings in African-American patient.

Methods: Eighteen patients that underwent aortic valve replacement in the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre over a 10-month period were studied. They were randomly allocated into two groups: group A--eight patients receiving cardioplegia without procaine; group B--ten patients receiving cardioplegia with procaine.

We conducted a prospective, observational, laboratory-based study on candidemia to investigate the incidence of candidemia, species distribution and clinical conditions between September 2003 and March 2004 in a private tertiary hospital in Recife, northeastern Brazil. Cases of candidemia were defined as occurrences of isolation of Candida spp from blood cultures. The incidence rate was calculated per 1,000 admissions.

The aim of this study was to analyze whether sFerritin is a reliable marker of the iron stores present in bone marrow of HD patients.
Design: Histomorphometric analysis of stored transiliac bone biopsies was used to assess iron stores by determining the number of iron-stained cells per square millimeter of bone marrow.

Cervical specimens from 144 women seen consecutively at the gynecology outpatient clinic of our institution from December 2003 to May 2005 were analyzed by cytopathology, histopathology, polymerase chain reaction for HPV-DNA, and p16INK4 immunostaining. Histologically normal biopsies, HPV-DNA negative by polymerase chain reaction, were used as control.

Objectives: Our group has concerned itself with the study of the effect of probiotics on the resistance to infections using experimental models. Here, we will focus on evidence that the UFV-H2b20 strain of Lactobacillus delbrueckii var. bulgaricus may be considered a probiotic and has protective effects on mice against a variety of bacterial infections.

Valvular heart disease (VHD) is characterized by an ongoing, inflammatory cellular response which results in a left ventricular hemodynamic stress change in response to valvulopathy. The current inflammatory hypothesis suggests that as the heart valve disease progresses the inflammatory cytokine response is activated causing continuation of deleterious effects on the heart and vasculature. This can lead to progression of heart failure and left ventricular dysfunction.

Objective: Adolescence is a period characterized by increased exploration and exposure to risk-taking behaviors, including unsafe sex. This study examines prior contraceptive method use by pregnant or recently pregnant adolescents in Teresina-Piauí, Brazil.
Design: Cross-sectional study.
Objective: To propose a methodology for characterizing proficiency in sputum smear microscopy for acid-fast bacilli (AFB) in the diagnosis of tuberculosis and to determine the number of microscopies necessary to establish this proficiency, as well as the quality of the transcription of results, the causes of the discrepancies in the readings (rater or microscope used), and the criterion for classification of microscopy results that poses the most difficulty in characterizing proficiency.
Methods: Four hundred sputum smear microscopies for the diagnosis of tuberculosis were analyzed through double-blind readings by six professionals who usually read/supervise microscopies performed in public health care facilities. The sample was stratified to obtain, at least, a reliability of 90% in the double-blind readings, an alpha error of 5%, and a precision of 3%.
