Purpose: To determine the safety and effectiveness of an expandable intravertebral implant (Spinejack; Stryker, Kalamazoo, Michigan) as a treatment option for patients with thoracolumbar spine burst fractures without fracture-related neurologic deficit.

Materials And Methods: Imaging studies before and after expandable intravertebral implantation and medical records of 33 patients, 11 (33.3%) men and 22 (66.

Purpose: To describe a previously unreported anatomical variant of the hepatic arterial supply: a conjoined right hepatic artery, formed by branches of the common hepatic artery and gastroduodenal artery.

Method: A 54-year-old female with oligometastatic colorectal cancer with metastases to the liver presented for planning stage arteriography in preparation for Y90 radioembolization.

Results: Arteriography of the common hepatic artery demonstrated bifurcation into a right hepatic artery and gastroduodenal artery.

Background: Uterine artery pseudoaneurysms (UAPs) are a rare life-threatening complication presenting as vaginal bleeding. Transvaginal ultrasound doppler scans can diagnose UAPs in the immediate and later postpartum period. This case report highlights UAP management using minimally invasive interventions for fertility preservation.

The association between continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (CF-LVADs) and gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding from angiodysplasia is well recognized. However, the association between continuous-flow biventricular assist devices (CF-BIVADs) and bleeding angiodysplasia is less understood. We report a case of GI bleeding from a patient with a CF-BIVAD.

Malnutrition is common among hemodialysis patients and is associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Early recognition and treatment of malnutrition is essential to improve the outcome of these patients. Nutritional status may be assessed by several clinical markers including dietary records, anthropometric measurements and subjective global assessment.

Background: Attributed to congenital malformation of lymphatic ducts, diffuse retroperitoneal cystic abdominal lymphangiomatosis has a distribution that often corresponds to the location of primitive fetal lymphatic sacs. Three recognized types are capillary, cavernous and cystic. Multisystem involvement may occur involving spleen, liver, bone, pancreas, soft tissue, limbs and brain.

Using the Hypertension Health Status Inventory and multivariate analysis, predictors of quality of life were determined for a random selection of 316 hypertensive patients. Controlling for the effects of demographic and socioeconomic factors and existing co-morbidity, a better quality of life was independently predicted by achieving a controlled blood pressure and absence of target organ complications. Neither the number of antihypertensive drugs received nor the dose frequency affected patients' quality of life.

Logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors of pharmacological and lifestyle compliance among hypertensive patients. Patients attending health insurance clinics for prescription refills were randomly selected and interviewed (n = 316). Blood pressure was controlled for 53.

The role that the pattern of vessel wall growth plays in determining pressure-lumen area (P-A) and pressure-compliance curves was examined. A P-A vessel model was developed that encompasses the complete range of pressure, including negative values, and accounts for size given the fixed length, nonlinear elastic wall properties, constant wall area, and collapse. Data were obtained from excised canine carotid and femoral arteries, jugular veins, and elastic tubing.

Objective: The objectives were (a) to evaluate the effects of WAY-123,398, a new class III antiarrhythmic agent, on the action potential of canine Purkinje fibres in comparison with dofetilide, E-4031, and dl-sotalol, and (b) to characterise the mechanism of the class III action by studying its effects on several ionic currents in isolated cat myocytes.

Methods: Transmembrane potentials in Purkinje fibres were studied with standard microelectrodes filled with 3M KCl. Myocytes were isolated by enzymatic disaggregation with collagenase and current recordings were obtained by voltage clamp with either the nystatin perforated patch technique or the usual whole cell configuration.

The synthesis and Class III antiarrhythmic activity of a series of 4-[(methylsulfonyl)amino]benzamides and sulfonamides are described. Selected compounds show a potent Class III activity and are devoid of effects on conduction both in vitro (dog Purkinje fibers) and in vivo (anesthetized dogs). Compounds having a 2-aminobenzimidazole group were found to be the most potent, and one compound having this heterocycle (5, WAY-123,398) was selected for further characterization.

The synthesis and biological evaluation of a series of novel 1-(aryloxy)-2-propanolamines and several related deshydroxy analogues are described. Compounds 4-29 were prepared and investigated for their class III electrophysiological activity in isolated canine Purkinje fibers and in anesthetized open-chest dogs. None of these compounds showed any class I activity.
