Segmentation of four-chamber view images in fetal ultrasound exams using a novel deep learning model ensemble method.

Fetal echocardiography, a specialized ultrasound application commonly utilized for fetal heart assessment, can greatly benefit from automated segmentation of anatomical structures, aiding operators in their evaluations. We introduce a novel approach that combines various deep learning models for segmenting key anatomical structures in 2D ultrasound images of the fetal heart. Our ensemble method combines the raw predictions from the selected models, obtaining the optimal set of segmentation components that closely approximate the distribution of the fetal heart, resulting in improved segmentation outcomes.

Treatment of dabigatran intoxication in critically ill patients with Acute Kidney Injury: The role of Sustained Low-Efficiency Dialysis.

The use of dabigatran in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) has widely increased in the last decades, due to its positive effects in terms of safety/efficacy. However, because of the risk of major bleeding, a great degree of attention has been suggested in elderly patients with multiple comorbidities. Notably, dabigatran mainly undergoes renal elimination and dose adjustment is recommended in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

Pediatric vulvar lichen sclerosus: Does it resolve or does it persist after menarche?

Background And Objectives: Although data regarding the rates of remission and progression of the disease are still scarce, it is generally now acknowledged that pediatric vulvar lichen sclerosus (pVLS) can persist beyond puberty. Recent studies reveal that this condition may persist in as many as 75% of cases. The present study aims to answer the following query: how does pVLS evolve after menarche?

Methods: This observational retrospective study conducted on premenarchal girls diagnosed with pVLS in our institution between 1990 and 2011 describes 31 patients who returned for multidisciplinary clinical evaluation following menarche.

Malocclusion characteristics amongst individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: To estimate the prevalence of malocclusion in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and to assess the relationship between ASD and malocclusion.

Methods: We searched electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, Embase, SciELO LILACS, Proquest, OpenGrey and Google Scholar. There were no language or publication dates restrictions.

Quadriceps muscle thickness assessed by ultrasound is independently associated with mortality in hemodialysis patients.

Background/objectives: Estimation of muscle mass is an integral part of nutritional assessment in End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) patients on chronic hemodialysis (HD). In this respect, muscle ultrasound (US) is a valid and reliable tool but has not been previously related to outcomes in this population. Aims of this study were to assess the relationship between quadriceps muscle thickness as assessed by US and outcomes in ESKD patients on HD; we also compared US with anthropometry and malnutrition inflammation score (MIS).

The use of immunotherapy in cancer treatment over the past decade has resulted in significant advances and improvements in cancer patients survival with the use of checkpoint inhibitors. Nevertheless, only a fraction of solid tumors responds to this immunotherapy modality. Another modality of immunotherapy consists of employing cell-based therapy as an adoptive therapeutic modality.

Nucleon Structure and Strong Interactions in Dark Matter Capture in Neutron Stars.

We outline two important effects that are missing from most evaluations of the dark matter capture rate in neutron stars. As dark matter scattering with nucleons in the star involves large momentum transfer, nucleon structure must be taken into account via a momentum dependence of the hadronic form factors. In addition, due to the high density of neutron star matter, we should account for nucleon interactions rather than modeling the nucleons as an ideal Fermi gas.

[Reorganization of haemodialysis during COVID-19 emergency: a report from Dialysis Centers of Parma province].

The epidemic wave that hit Italy from February 21st, 2020, when the Italian National Institute of Health confirmed the first case of SARS‑CoV‑2 infection, led to a rapid and efficient reorganization of Dialysis Centers' activities, in order to contain large-scale spread of disease in this clinical setting. We herein report the experience of the Hemodialysis Unit of Parma University Hospital (Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria, Parma, Italy) and the Dialysis Centers of Parma territory, in the period from March 1st, 2020 to June 15, 2020. Among patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis, 37/283 (13%) had positive swabs for SARS‑CoV‑2, 9/37 (24%) died because of COVID-19.

Clinical, Cardiological and Serologic Follow-Up of Chagas Disease in Children and Adolescents from the Amazon Region, Brazil: Longitudinal Study.

Outbreaks of Chagas disease (CD) by foodborne transmission is a problem related to deforestation, exposing people to triatomines infected by , in the Amazon region. Once involving long-time follow-up, the treatment efficacy of the CD during its acute phase is still unknown. The authors aim to describe the clinical and epidemiologic profile of children and adolescents with CD, as well as treatment and cardiac involvement during the follow-up.

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), with a class size of 162, is one of the largest in the nation. In an effort to streamline examination procedures, create a consistent assessment format among courses, replace paper exams, track test questions linked to learning objectives, and reduce exam grading time, our DVM program adopted the use of ExamSoft for core courses beginning in the autumn semester 2014. ExamSoft is an electronic assessment application, which provides a secure testing environment and robust reporting features.

A case of endometrial glassy cell carcinoma: a rare entity which necessitates of better understanding.

Endometrial glassy cell carcinoma (EGCC) is a rare neoplasm, accounting for 0.5% of the carcinomas in the endometrium, composed of cells with granular eosinophilic or amphophilic cytoplasm, giving it a ground glass appearance. Till date, only 14 cases of this carcinoma have been reported.

Background & Aims: Protein-Energy Wasting (PEW) is a pathological condition of renal patients with advanced Chronic Kidney Disease characterized by a progressive reduction of energy and protein assets. Nutritional status assessment, especially for what concerns muscle mass, is essential for both the identification of patients at risk for the development of PEW, as well as monitoring the effects of nutritional interventions. Ultrasound methods are easily applicable at the bedside for quantitative assessment of skeletal muscle.

A secondary abdominal pregnancy with unusual placental implantation in the fallopian tube: a diagnostic challenge.

We reported a case of secondary abdominal pregnancy with placental implantation into the fallopian tube, diagnosed at 16 weeks, in a woman admitted to the emergency room complaining of syncopal attacks. The best approach would be termination of the pregnancy, taking into consideration the high risk to the mother and the low possibility of alive and healthy birth. We had to perform an urgent surgical intervention due to the fact that the patient was in a clinically unstable condition, which was related to hemoperitoneum.

Epstein-Barr virus in tumor-infiltrating B cells of myasthenia gravis thymoma: an innocent bystander or an autoimmunity mediator?

The thymus plays a key role in myasthenia gravis (MG), a B cell-mediated autoimmune disorder affecting neuromuscular junction. Most MG patients have thymic abnormalities, including hyperplasia and thymoma, a neoplasm of thymic epithelial cells. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with autoimmune diseases and tumors.

[Differential diagnosis and management of abnormal uterine bleeding in adolescence].

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is defined as any atypical genital bleeding originating from the uterine cavity, without the characteristics of normal menstrual period. AUB is an important symptom both for adolescents and their parents, and it usually leads to a state of anxiety. Although about 95% of AUB could be considered as a dysfunctional disorder, AUB requires well-defined diagnostic procedures in order to detect a physical cause, ruling out complex or systemic diseases, including oncological ones.

Controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle by Bacillus species.

In this study, we tested the in vitro and in vivo larvicidal activity of Bacillus species against gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle, and their viability in the presence of anthelmintics. For in vitro tests, cattle feces naturally infected with trichostrongylides were incubated with spore suspensions of Bacillus circulans (Bcir), B. thuringiensis var.

Garré's sclerosing osteomyelitis: case report.

The aim of this study was to report on a rare case of Garré's sclerosing osteomyelitis. The patient was a 54-year-old woman with a history of treatment for lupus using corticoids for 20 years, and for osteoporosis using alendronate for five years. She presented edema and developed a limitation of left knee movement one year earlier, with mild effusion and pain on metaphyseal palpation, but without fever.

Association between anterior open bite and impact on quality of life of preschool children.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between different types of malocclusion and the impact on quality of life among preschoolers and their families. A cross-sectional study was carried out involving 451 children 3-5 years of age. A clinical exam was performed to evaluate the malocclusions according to criteria proposed by Foster and Hamilton.
