Insulin degludec 100 U/mL for treatment of spontaneous diabetes mellitus in dogs.

Background: The advantages of insulin degludec 100 U/mL (IDeg100) in the treatment of diabetes mellitus (DM) include consistent release, predictable glucose-lowering effect, and minimal day-to-day variability.

Hypothesis/objectives: To describe the use of IDeg100 in dogs with DM, level of diabetic control and adverse effects.

Animals: Thirty-three client-owned dogs with DM.

Transmucosal glucagon rapidly increases blood glucose concentration in healthy cats.

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of transmucosal glucagon powder (Baqsimi; Amphastar Pharmaceuticals) on blood glucose (BG) concentrations in healthy cats and describe adverse reactions to its administration.

Methods: A randomized, controlled, crossover study was conducted on six healthy cats with a 7-day washout period between treatments. Transmucosal glucagon powder was administered intranasally and rectally and compared with intranasal placebo.

The added value of serologic testing: A comparison of influenza incidence among pregnant persons based on molecular-based surveillance versus serologic testing.

Background: We examined the added value of serologic testing for estimating influenza virus infection incidence based on illness surveillance with molecular testing versus periodic serologic testing.

Methods: Pregnant persons unvaccinated against influenza at <28 weeks gestation were enrolled before the 2017 and 2018 influenza seasons in Peru and Thailand. Blood specimens were collected at enrollment and ≤14 days postpartum for testing by hemagglutination inhibition assay for antibodies against influenza reference viruses.

Advancing influenza vaccines: A review of next-generation candidates and their potential for global health impact.

Background: Influenza vaccines are an essential tool for influenza prevention, control and preparedness. However, demand for them and their programmatic suitability globally is significantly influenced by their variable effectiveness against influenza illness annually, limited duration of protection and need for yearly updating and vaccination. As such, the World Health Organization and major funders, such as the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, have strongly encouraged developing influenza vaccines with increased efficacy, breadth and duration of protection.

Phosphorus lability across diverse agricultural contexts with legacy sources.

The buffering of phosphorus (P) in the landscape delays management outcomes for water quality. If stored in labile form (readily exchangeable and bioavailable), P may readily pollute waters. We studied labile P and its intensity for >600 soils and sediments across seven study locations in the United States.

Seasonal influenza vaccination: A global review of national policies in 194 WHO member states in 2022.

Introduction: Seasonal influenza vaccination prevents severe influenza disease and death. The World Health Organization (WHO) encourages all countries to consider annual seasonal influenza vaccination for health workers, people with chronic conditions, older adults, pregnant women and other high-risk populations as relevant for their national context. This paper provides a global update on the status of countries' influenza vaccination policies and programmes as of December 2022.

Improving the Efficiency of Single-Isocenter Multiple Metastases Stereotactic Radiosurgery Treatment.

Purpose: Multiple brain metastases can be treated efficiently with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) using a single-isocenter dynamic conformal arc (SIDCA) technique. Currently, plans are manually optimized, which may lead to unnecessary table angles and arcs being used. This study aimed to evaluate an automatic 4π optimization SIDCA algorithm for treatment efficiency and plan quality.

The glucagon-receptor antagonist MK-3577 reduces glucagon-stimulated plasma glucose and insulin concentrations in metabolically healthy overweight cats.

The role of glucagon disturbances in diabetes mellitus is increasingly recognized and, hence, glucagon antagonism might aid in treatment of hyperglycemia and other metabolic disturbances. The aim of this study was to assess the pharmacokinetics of the glucagon receptor antagonist MK-3577 and its effect on plasma glucose, insulin, and glucagon concentrations in healthy cats. In a cross-over placebo-controlled study, 5 purpose-bred cats were treated with either Placebo, MK-3577 (1 mg/kg), or MK-3577 (3 mg/kg).

The Exon Junction Complex Factor RBM8A in Glial Fibrillary Acid Protein-Expressing Astrocytes Modulates Locomotion Behaviors.

The role of RNA Binding Motif Protein 8a (RBM8A), an exon junction complex (EJC) component, in neurodevelopmental disorders has been increasingly studied for its crucial role in regulating multiple levels of gene expression. It regulates mRNA splicing, translation, and mRNA degradation and influences embryonic development. RBM8A protein is expressed in both neurons and astrocytes, but little is known about RBM8A's specific role in glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP)-positive astrocytes.

Isolation of feline islets of Langerhans by selective osmotic shock produces glucose responsive islets.

Introduction: Pancreatic islet isolation is essential for studying islet physiology, pathology, and transplantation, and feline islets could be an important model for human type II diabetes mellitus (T2D). Traditional isolation methods utilizing collagenases inflict damage and, in cats, may contribute to the difficulty in generating functional islets, as demonstrated by glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS). GLUT2 expression in β cells may allow for adaptation to hyperosmolar glucose solutions while exocrine tissue is selectively disrupted.

Using an Adaptive Listening Tour and Survey to Promote Faculty Reflection on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the Pre-clinical Undergraduate Medical Curriculum.

Unlabelled: Descriptive studies regarding how to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into medical education are lacking. We utilized the AAMC's Key Steps for Assessing Institutional Culture and Climate framework to evaluate our current curriculum via listening tours ( = 34 participants) and a survey of the 10 pre-clinical block directors, to better understand the opportunities and challenges of improving DEI in the pre-clinical curriculum. Opportunities included diversifying cases and standardized patients, enhancing information on systemic racism and social determinants of health, and increasing racial humility and population genetics/epigenetics training.

Evaluation of cesarean delivery rates and factors associated with cesarean delivery among women enrolled in a pregnancy cohort study at two tertiary hospitals in Thailand.

Background: Cesarean delivery rates have increased globally resulting in a public health concern. We estimate rates of cesarean deliveries among Thai women using the World Health Organization (WHO) Robson Classification system and compare rates by Robson group to the Robson guideline for acceptable rates to identify groups that might benefit most from interventions for rate reduction.

Methods: In 2017 and 2018, we established cohorts of pregnant women aged ≥ 18 years seeking prenatal care at two tertiary Thai hospitals and followed them until 6-8 weeks postpartum.

WHO's Investigations and Studies, Unity Studies: A global initiative creating equitable opportunities for enhanced surveillance, operational research, capacity building, and global knowledge sharing.

The World Health Organization's Unity Studies global initiative provides a generic preparedness and readiness framework for conducting detailed investigations and epidemiological studies critical for the early and ongoing assessment of emerging respiratory pathogens of pandemic potential. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the initiative produced standardized investigation protocols and supported Member States to generate robust and comparable data to inform public health decision making. The subsequent iteration of the initiative is being implemented to develop revised and new investigation protocols, implementation toolkits and work to build a sustainable global network of sites, enabling the global community to be better prepared for the next emerging respiratory pathogen with epidemic or pandemic potential.

University Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Policies in Sub-Saharan Africa: Exploring Best Practices.

Aims: Addressing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in educational settings across the globe, particularly in institutions of higher education, requires strong institutional framework and policy guidelines. Most research about university SGBV policies has focused on high-income countries with little or no recourse to universities in low- and middle-income countries. This policy analysis aims to analyze existing policies related to SGBV from select sub-Saharan African universities to provide guidance on best practices toward addressing SGBV at universities in Africa.

Safety and immunogenicity of locally produced trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (Tri Fluvac) in healthy Thai adults aged 18-64 years in Nakhon Phanom: A Phase III double blinded, three-arm, randomized, controlled trial.

Background: Domestic influenza vaccine production facilitates a sustainable supply for mitigating seasonal influenza and improves national health security by providing infrastructure and experience for pandemic vaccine production, if needed.

Methods: A Phase III, double blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted from Sep 2019-Oct 2020 in healthy adults 18-64 years in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. Randomization (3:3:1) compared study vaccine (Tri Fluvac), saline placebo, and an active comparator (licensed vaccine).

Board Leaders' Perspectives of the Impact of Nurses on Boards.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to explore the impact of nurses on boards (NOBs) from the perspectives of board leaders who are not nurses.

Background: Research about the impact of NOBs derives from nurses' recall of board experiences. No studies explore the impact of NOBs from perspectives other than nurses.

Measurement of the Positive Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment to 0.20 ppm.

We present a new measurement of the positive muon magnetic anomaly, a_{μ}≡(g_{μ}-2)/2, from the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment using data collected in 2019 and 2020. We have analyzed more than 4 times the number of positrons from muon decay than in our previous result from 2018 data. The systematic error is reduced by more than a factor of 2 due to better running conditions, a more stable beam, and improved knowledge of the magnetic field weighted by the muon distribution, ω[over ˜]_{p}^{'}, and of the anomalous precession frequency corrected for beam dynamics effects, ω_{a}.

Men in Female-Dominated Nursing Specialties.

While numbers of men in the nursing profession have slowly increased, men in female-dominated specialty areas have not changed. Male nurses and nursing students encounter gender bias and discrimination in certain specialty nursing environments. This has implications for the quality of care provided, parental engagement, and job satisfaction.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study compared self-reported marginalization in male and female baccalaureate nursing students.

A Critical Minority: The Marginalization of Male Faculty in Nursing Academia.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between gender and marginalization in nursing academia.

Background: Men continue to be significantly underrepresented in nursing academia because they experience numerous barriers to their integration and success in the profession.

Method: A descriptive cross-sectional design was implemented in this pilot study to investigate differences in perceived marginalization between male versus female faculty teaching in Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited colleges.

Assessment of the FreeStyle Libre 2 interstitial glucose monitor in hypo- and euglycemic cats.

Background: Continuous glucose monitoring systems have been validated for eu- and hyperglycemic cats. The FreeStyle Libre 2 (FSL2) is sufficiently accurate in people during hypoglycemia to guide critical treatment decisions without confirmation of blood glucose concentration (BG).

Objectives: Assess FSL2 accuracy in cats with hypoglycemia.

Establishment of a feline glycated hemoglobin reference interval for a novel dried-blood-spot assay and the effects of anemia on assay results.

Background: Glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) reflects long-term (months) glycemic control and has been previously investigated as a monitoring and diagnostic tool in diabetic cats. However, a standardized, reliable, and globally available test and reference intervals (RIs) have not been established. A novel dried-blood-spot card system (A1Care, Baycom Diagnostics) allows for easy collection and evaluation of HbA1c levels in feline patients.
