Objectives: Programmed death-1 (PD-1) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitors have been approved as a standard therapy for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Although PD-L1 expression serves as a predictive biomarker for the efficacy of immunotherapy, there are no established biomarkers to predict the expression of PD-L1. The inflammatory markers C-reactive protein (CRP) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were recently shown to predict the efficacy of nivolumab for NSCLC patients.

Background: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), a devastating neoplasm, is traditionally considered to be resistant to antitumor therapy. Identification of clinical prognostic indicators is therefore needed. Although the C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) has been used to predict the prognosis of many types of malignancy, its utility in patients with MPM is unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • Advanced or recurrent gastric cancer in elderly patients is often treated with fluoropyrimidine (S-1) alone for better tolerability, while the standard treatment is a combination with platinum (cisplatin).
  • A multicenter study analyzed data from 444 patients aged 70 and older, comparing outcomes between those treated with S-1 only and those receiving the SP combination therapy, utilizing propensity score matching to balance patient characteristics.
  • The results showed no significant survival differences between the two groups, but the SP group experienced more severe adverse events, prompting further research to optimize treatment strategies for elderly patients.

There is no established standard second-line chemotherapy after the failure of the first-line cisplatin-based chemotherapy for patients with advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma. With regards to second-line chemotherapy, methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin and cisplatin (MVAC) was used from July 2009 onwards, and paclitaxel and carboplatin (TC) was introduced in April 2014 at the National Kyushu Cancer Center. The present study aimed to assess the prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) in second-line treatment that included best supportive care (BSC), and the tolerability and efficacy of TC chemotherapy.

Background: The preoperative immune-nutritional status has been shown to predict the postoperative prognosis in various types of cancer; however, the prognostic significance of the controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score in resected lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) has yet to be elucidated.

Methods: A total of 108 patients with resected lung SCC were analyzed for their clinicopathological factors, including the CONUT score, which can be calculated from the serum albumin, total cholesterol, and total peripheral lymphocyte count. The patients were divided into two groups: CONUT low (0 or 1) or high (≥2).

Immunotherapy is reportedly effective in colorectal cancers (CRCs) with high microsatellite instability (MSI-H); however, the specific cell types that respond to immune checkpoint therapy are unclear. Herein, we aimed to examine the expression of programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) and related proteins in MSI-H and microsatellite-stable (MSS) CRCs to investigate the immune microenvironment at the tumor's invasive front. The MSI status was retrospectively assessed in 499 patients undergoing surgical resection of primary CRC; of these, 48 were classified as MSI-H.

Background: As the toxicity associated with the α-GalCer-pulsed dendritic cell (DC) therapy could be considered to be negligible, its addition to postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy would be expected to greatly improve the therapeutic effect, and could result in prolonged survival. The aim of the present study is to compare the therapeutic efficacy of alpha-galactosylceramide-pulsed DC therapy in patients who have undergone a complete resection of stage II-IIIA non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) followed by postoperative adjuvant therapy with cisplatin plus vinorelbine, to that in patients who did not receive additional treatment (surgical resection plus postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy only).

Methods: Subsequent to the complete resection of NSCLC, followed by the administration of cisplatin plus vinorelbine dual-agent combination adjuvant chemotherapy, patients who satisfy the inclusion criteria will be randomly allocated to either the α-GalCer-pulsed DC immune therapy group, or the standard treatment group.
