A tailored-pulse-imploded core with a diameter of 70  μm is flashed by counterirradiating 110 fs, 7 TW laser pulses. Photon emission (>40  eV) from the core exceeds the emission from the imploded core by 6 times, even though the heating pulse energies are only one seventh of the implosion energy. The coupling efficiency from the heating laser to the core using counterirradiation is 14% from the enhancement of photon emission.

A novel direct core heating fusion process is introduced, in which a preimploded core is predominantly heated by energetic ions driven by LFEX, an extremely energetic ultrashort pulse laser. Consequently, we have observed the D(d,n)^{3}He-reacted neutrons (DD beam-fusion neutrons) with the yield of 5×10^{8} n/4π sr. Examination of the beam-fusion neutrons verified that the ions directly collide with the core plasma.

Using a newly developed rapid test, an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection in a long-term care facility was detected within only 2 days after the onset of symptoms in a putative index case. The outbreak was almost under control within 8 days mainly by zoning patients, with the exception of two cases of HMPV that were diagnosed 16 and 17 days after the onset of the outbreak. According to an immunological diagnosis as well as the rapid test, it was eventually proven that 18 patients had HMPV infections.

Ultrasound (US) serves as a stimulus to change shear viscosity of aqueous polysaccharides of ι-carrageenan, κ-carrageenan and, agar. The US effect was compared in their aqueous solutions at 60 °C for the US frequency of 23, 45, and 83 kHz. Under the US condition with 50 W at 45 kHz, the shear viscosity of each aqueous solution was decreased significantly.

Hybrid photocatalysts consisting of a ruthenium complex and p-type photoactive N-doped Ta(2)O(5) anchored with an organic group were successfully synthesized by a direct assembly method. The photocatalyst anchored by phosphonate exhibited excellent photoconversion activity of CO(2) to formic acid under visible-light irradiation with respect to the reaction rate and stability.

Photoelectrochemical reduction of CO(2) to HCOO(-) was successfully achieved by a p-type InP photocathode modified with an electropolymerized ruthenium complex in water. This technique decreased the required applied potential for CO(2) reduction by utilizing solar energy. The carbon and proton sources of HCOO(-) were identified by a tracer experiment to be CO(2) and H(2)O, respectively.

A post-marketing clinical study was previously conducted in pediatric patients with respiratory infection to evaluate the pharmacokinetics, efficacy and safety of cefcapene pivoxil (CFPN-PI) fine granules for children. Based on the results from this study, we evaluated PK/PD breakpoints and clinical/bacteriological effects of CFPN-PI at free drug concentrations in pediatric patients with respiratory infection to determine an effective and safe dosage regimen of CFPN-PI. An anomalous photovoltaic film formed by simultaneous oblique sputter deposition of CdTe and CdS from different directions was integrated onto LiNbO(3) and combined with a Mach-Zehnder-type interferometric waveguide modulator. Irradiation by 830-nm laser light with low intensity near 1 mW of the photovoltaic film induced anomalous photovoltages of ~5 V, which is as high as the half-wave voltage. This photovoltage was used to control the signal light in the waveguide.

A procedure for the quantitative analysis of transient surface catalytic reactions in millisecond time resolution has been studied constructing a specially designed apparatus employing (1) pulsed-gas valves for the injection of reactant molecules onto catalysts and (2) a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) to detect every reaction product simultaneously. For a better understanding of the catalytic activity and selectivity for products quantitatively, a procedure for measuring an amount of reactant molecules injected onto catalyst surface and calibrating the intensity of mass signal were proposed and implemented. We tested the applicability of this procedure for the quantitative analysis of products of NO+H(2) reaction on Pt-Al(2)O(3) catalysts (a planar catalyst: Pt-Al(2)O(3)Si substrates inserted into a micro-tube-reactor with SiC balls).

Pharmacokinetics, clinical efficacy and safety of teicoplanin (TEIC) were evaluated in pediatric and neonate patients with MRSA sepsis in the dosages approved in overseas. The administrated dose for pediatrics patients was 10 mg/kg once at hour 0, 12 and 24, followed by every 24 hours intervals. To examine the involvement of transforming growth factor-beta(1 )(TGF-beta(1)) in intestinal anastomotic repair, we administered a TGF-beta(1)-neutralizing antibody to rats after operation, and then examined its influence on the healing process and interaction with other peptide growth factors. Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to primary anastomosis after transection of the small intestine (n = 30) and treated by intraperitoneal administration of IgG (n = 15) or the TGF-beta(1) neutralizing antibody (n = 15). Treatment with the antibody against TGF-beta(1) resulted in more definite mucosal growth and increased vascularity on day 5 after surgery.
