Background: Radiotherapy is one of the main treatments for head and neck cancer; however, due to its non-selectivity the glandular tissue can be affected. This scoping review aimed to identify the evidence about mesenchymal stem cell therapies for irradiated salivary gland regeneration.

Material And Methods: Two independent reviewers performed a literature search in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is closely related to periodontal disease and dental lesions, disorders which through dental infection and metabolic imbalance become negatively potentiated and cause a vicious circle that is almost impossible to break. The aim of this research was to study if the severity of dental and periodontal lesions is related to the presence of microvascular complications and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Methods: In total, 112 subjects with T2DM that underwent a dental evaluation were enrolled in this case-control study.

Recent studies have revealed that dysbiosis, defined as alterations in gut microbiota, plays an important role in the development and the progression of many non-communicable diseases, including metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The high frequency of GDM makes this disorder an important public health issue, which needs to be addressed in order to reduce both the maternal and fetal complications that are frequently associated with this disease. The studies regarding the connections between gut dysbiosis and GDM are still in their early days, with new research continuously emerging.

In recent decades, it has become clear that the gut is more than just a digestive organ; it also functions as an immune organ with regulatory capabilities and acts as a "second brain" that influences brain function due to the presence and regulatory roles of the gut microbiota (GM). The GM is a crucial component of its host and significantly impacts human health. Dysbiosis, or microbial imbalance, has been closely linked to various diseases, including gastrointestinal, neurological, psychiatric, and metabolic disorders.

Introduction: Recent findings suggest that the four-variable Kidney Failure Risk Equation (KFRE) may be useful in predicting the likelihood of allograft failure in adult kidney transplant (KT) recipients. However, research on its application in pediatric patients is lacking. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of the four-variable KFRE for prediction of the two-year and five-year risk of allograft failure in a cohort of pediatric KT recipients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the presence of antimicrobial resistance in Uruguay, specifically focusing on 16S ribosomal RNA methylases that confer significant resistance to aminoglycosides.
  • Five bacterial isolates from patients across three hospitals were analyzed using advanced genomic techniques to identify antibiotic susceptibility and resistance mechanisms.
  • The findings reveal the first detection of specific plasmids containing resistance genes in Uruguay, highlighting the serious health risks posed by multidrug-resistant organisms due to limited effective treatment options.

Background: Dyslipidemia in pregnancy presents unique clinical challenges due to its effects on maternal and fetal health. This systematic review hypothesizes that molecular alterations in lipid metabolism during pregnancy contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes and seeks to identify the clinical implications of these changes. The rationale behind this review stems from the increased risk of complications such as preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction, and acute pancreatitis associated with dyslipidemia in pregnancy.

Lipases present biotechnological applications in various industrial sectors due to their ability to perform multiple biochemical reactions. However, the high cost sometimes discourages their potential uses, besides the extensive number of patents involving them. One of the most utilized and researched lipases is Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB), known for its versatility, encompassing enantioselectivity, thermostability, and a wide range of substrates.

  • Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a serious condition that can lead to severe bone loss, making diagnosis difficult, especially in patients receiving certain cancer treatments.* -
  • A case study of a 68-year-old man with liver cancer showed symptoms of jaw pain, yet initial dental exams revealed no obvious issues until deeper investigation indicated MRONJ Stage 2.* -
  • After surgical treatment for MRONJ, the patient experienced relief, highlighting the importance of considering MRONJ in patients with jaw pain who are undergoing specific therapies, as well as the need for careful monitoring of dental health in these individuals.*

Background: Real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) is one of the most widely used gene expression analyses for validating RNA-seq data. This technique requires reference genes that are stable and highly expressed, at least across the different biological conditions present in the transcriptome. Reference and variable candidate gene selection is often neglected, leading to misinterpretation of the results.

Malaria transmission begins when infected female mosquitos deposit parasites into the mammalian host's skin during a bloodmeal. The salivary gland-resident sporozoite parasites migrate to the bloodstream, subsequently invading and replicating within hepatocytes. As mosquitos are more active at night, with a 24-hour rhythm, we investigated whether their salivary glands are under circadian control, anticipating bloodmeals and modulating sporozoite biology for host encounters.

Vancomycin is the cornerstone in treating methicillin-resistant (MRSA) infections. However, therapeutic failures can occur when MRSA strains with decreased susceptibility to glycopeptides (DSG) are involved. The aim of this study was to detect and characterize DSG in MRSA recovered from children with invasive diseases at a reference pediatric hospital between 2009 and 2019.

  • Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a condition that can occur in the jaw after radiation therapy for head and neck cancer, and it can lead to exposure of necrotic bone.
  • A case study reported a 72-year-old man with ORN of the torus mandibularis, where traditional surgical options may be difficult.
  • The patient was treated successfully with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), resulting in the healing of the affected area without surgery over a period of 5 weeks, and no recurring issues were noted after 6 months.

The increasing global pressure to explore alternative protein sources derived from animal by-products has opened-up opportunities, but it has also created the need to assess their compliance with labelling statements, to ensure consumer's trust in the composition of both feed and food products. Assessing the authenticity of highly processed animal by-products, particularly within the rapidly expanding Halal food market, presents a significant challenge due to the lack of robust and standardized methodologies. However, the success of DNA based authenticity system is highly dependent on the extracted DNA quantity, quality, and purity ratios from heterogeneous matrices.
