Somatostatin-expressing (SST) neurons are a major class of electrophysiologically and morphologically distinct inhibitory cells in the mammalian neocortex. Transcriptomic data suggest that this class can be divided into multiple subtypes that are correlated with morpho-electric properties. At the same time, availability of transgenic tools to identify and record from SST neurons in awake, behaving mice has stimulated insights about their response properties and computational function.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFSomatostatin (SST)-expressing inhibitory neurons are a major class of neocortical γ-amino butyric acid (GABA) neurons, where morphological, electrophysiological, and transcriptomic analyses indicate more than a dozen different subtypes. However, whether this diversity is related to specific roles in cortical computations and plasticity remains unclear. Here we identify learning-dependent, subtype-specific plasticity in layer 2/3 SST neurons of the mouse somatosensory cortex.

Purpose: Chest pain in a common symptom in patients attending Emergency Department worldwide and can be related to an extensive variety of disorders, so it represents a diagnostic and logistic challenge for Emergency physicians. The aim of this study is to identify a subgroup of patients with a low pre-test probability of major adverse cardiac events, for which there is no need of troponin testing, to avoid potential harm from false-positive testing and long length stay in ED.
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data of patients that attended ED of Siena complaining chest pain from January 2019 to August 2021.
High-throughput anatomic data can stimulate and constrain new hypotheses about how neural circuits change in response to experience. Here, we use fluorescence-based reagents for presynaptic and postsynaptic labeling to monitor changes in thalamocortical synapses onto different compartments of layer 5 (L5) pyramidal (Pyr) neurons in somatosensory (barrel) cortex from mixed-sex mice during whisker-dependent learning (Audette et al., 2019).

Policy makers urgently need evidence of the effectiveness of additional vaccine doses and its clinical spectrum for individuals with complete primary immunisation schedules, particularly in countries where the primary schedule used inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.
Methods: Using individual-level data, we evaluated a prospective, observational, national-level cohort of individuals (aged ≥16 years) affiliated with the Fondo Nacional de Salud insurance programme in Chile, to assess the effectiveness of CoronaVac (Sinovac Biotech), AZD1222 (Oxford-AstraZeneca), or BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) vaccine boosters in individuals who had completed a primary immunisation schedule with CoronaVac, compared with unvaccinated individuals.
Simon tasks reveal implicit processing conflicts that arise when the abstract coding of stimulus position is incongruent with coding for location of the output response. Participants were tested with two versions of a Simon task in a counterbalanced order to examine a potential female bias for attending to object characteristics versus object location. Both tasks used a triangle pointing to the left or right.

Consensus guidelines to stage childhood malignancies in population cancer registries ("Toronto Childhood Cancer Stage Guidelines") have been recently proposed with the goal of data comparability. Indeed, stage is not systematically recorded in all registries and, when it is, different classification systems are used.

We calculated the observed/expected (O/E) ratio of adolescent patients (15-19 years old) admitted to AIEOP centers during the years 2013-2017. Observed cases were obtained from the AIEOP database (model 1.

Methods: The specialized Childhood Cancer Registry of the Piedmont region in Italy provided data on all the cases (aged 0-14) diagnosed with cancer in the period 1976-2011 who resided in the city of Turin (capital of the Piedmont region) at least once since 1971.
Processing of visual features related to objects and space relations occurs within separate cortical streams that interact with selective attention. Such separation has implications for cognitive development because the perception of 'what' and 'where' provide a neural foundation for the development of aspects of higher cognition. Thus, a small attentional bias in early development for attending to one aspect over the other might influence subsequent higher cognitive processing in tasks involving object recognition and space relations.

The preferred tool to investigate family expenditure is the retrospective questionnaire, which is subject to recall errors and selection bias. Therefore, in the present study the economic burden of caregiving on families of children and adolescents (0-19 years of age) with cancer was analysed using administrative data as an alternative to retrospective questionnaires.

We describe the experience of marriage and reproduction as indicators of quality of life, in a population-based cohort of adult long-term survivors after early cancer reported to the Childhood Cancer Registry of Piedmont. The study included 1237 survivors with a malignant neoplasm diagnosed during 1967-2000 when aged 0-14 years, who attained age 18 years.

Method: Thirty-three patients aged 42 +/- 12 years with 40 VADS confirmed via digital subtraction angiography (DSA) (n = 37) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) (n = 3) were included in the study. All patients were investigated with extracranial CDUS and transcranial CDUS (TCCDUS) over a mean +/- SD follow-up period of 42 +/- 24 months and occurrence of new ischemic symptoms was assessed.
The influence of whole-body positions on the cerebral blood flow in normal subjects is unclear. Blood flow in cerebral veins and sinuses is continuous, pulsatile and proportional to cerebral blood flow. We examined young healthy volunteers to evaluate peak mean flow velocity (vm) in the straight sinus (SS) assessed by transcranial Doppler sonography in predefined variations of the whole-body pitch position relative to gravity in the presence of a normal (normocarbia) and an impaired (hypercarbia) cerebral autoregulation.

A postal questionnaire was sent both to childhood cancer survivors and to their general practitioners.

For each time period of diagnosis, the number of avoided deaths within 5 years after diagnosis was estimated as the difference between the observed number of deaths and the number of deaths that would have been observed if the patients had experienced the same mortality as in the reference period of 1970-1974. The national estimate of the number of avoided deaths was calculated by applying Piedmont cumulative mortality to the expected number of incident cases in Italy.

Patients And Methods: During 2003, a 15-item Health Utilities Index questionnaire was mailed to 1005 5-year survivors, identified from the population-based Childhood Cancer Registry of Piedmont, to derive scores for overall HRQL and for eight single attributes of health. Score differences were estimated as adjusted prevalence odds ratios.
