The dyads of cardiac myocytes contain ryanodine receptors (RYRs) that generate calcium sparks upon activation. To test how geometric factors of RYR distribution contribute to the formation of calcium sparks, which cannot be addressed experimentally, we performed in silico simulations on a large set of models of calcium release sites (CRSs). A chemosensor for on-site sensing of ammonia precursor in concrete to avoid a problem of ammonia emission into the indoor space of concrete buildings was designed and implemented. It was found that aqueous extracts of concrete samples containing antifreeze additives and excreting ammonia were colored in the presence of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde. This phenomenon was used for the fast visual sensing of main ammonia precursor (urea) in concrete for the first time.

Calcium release sites (CRSs) play a key role in excitation-contraction coupling of cardiac myocytes. Recent studies based on electron tomography and super-resolution imaging revealed that CRSs are not completely filled with ryanodine receptors (RyRs) and that the spatial arrangement of RyRs is neither uniform nor static. Exposure to extreme hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) >5-6 atmospheres absolute (ATA) produces baroreflex impairment, sympathetic hyperactivation, hypertension, tachycardia, and cerebral hyperemia, known as phase II, culminating in seizures. We hypothesized that attenuation of the effects of high sympathetic outflow would preserve regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and protect against HBO-induced seizures. To explore this possibility, we tested four adrenoceptor antagonists in conscious and anesthetized rats exposed to HBO at 5 and 6 ATA, respectively: phentolamine (nonselective α and α), prazosin (selective α), propranolol (nonselective β and β), and atenolol (selective β).

We report new results of a Fe Mössbauer study of hyperfine magnetic interactions in the layered multiferroic 3R-AgFeO demonstrating two magnetic phase transitions at T and T . The asymptotic value β   ≈  0.34 for the critical exponent obtained from the temperature dependence of the hyperfine field H (T) at Fe the nuclei below T   ≈  14 K indicates that 3R-AgFeO shows quasi-3D critical behavior.

An integrative model of the calcium dynamics in cardiac pacemaker cells is developed taking into account a synergetic effect of the interaction between an outer membrane oscillator and an intracellular calcium oscillator ("membrane and Ca(2+)-clock"). The main feature of the model is a description of the stochastic dynamics of Ca2+ release units within the electron-conformational mechanism of the functioning of ryanodine-sensitive calcium channels. It is shown that interaction of two cellular oscillators provides a stable action potential generation in the cardiac pacemaker cells even in the case of the stochastic Ca2+ dynamics.

The simple and easy performed automated method for the IR determination of petroleum products (PP) in water using extraction-chromatographic cartridges has been developed. The method assumes two stages: on-site extraction of PP during a sampling by using extraction-chromatographic cartridges and subsequent determination of the extracted PP using sequential injection analysis (SIA) with IR detection. The appropriate experimental conditions for extraction of the dissolved in water PP and for automated SIA procedure were investigated.

We suggest a novel approach for classification of flow analysis methods according to the conditions under which the mass transfer processes and chemical reactions take place in the flow mode: dispersion-convection flow methods and forced-convection flow methods. The first group includes continuous flow analysis, flow injection analysis, all injection analysis, sequential injection analysis, sequential injection chromatography, cross injection analysis, multi-commutated flow analysis, multi-syringe flow injection analysis, multi-pumping flow systems, loop flow analysis, and simultaneous injection effective mixing flow analysis. A simple, rapid and reliable gas-diffusion flow injection (GD-FI) method for ammonium determination in building materials has been developed. It is based on leaching ammonium from a ground solid sample into an alkaline solution with subsequent ammonia gas generation. Ammonia is then transported in a nitrogen stream to the GD cell of the FI system where it is absorbed into its acceptor solution containing a mixture of the acid-base indicators cresol red and thymol blue.

Critical value of oxygen tension (Po2) and cerebral blood flow in the striatum for seizure appearance during hyperbaric oxygenation (5 ATA) were determined in awake Wistar rats. Seizure activity was observed at Po2=1030±102 mm Hg. A relationship between brain Po2 and blood flow was revealed at different regimens of hyperbaric oxygenation using a mathematical model.

Disproportionation in 3d compounds can give rise to an unconventional electron-hole Bose liquid with a very rich phase diagram, from a Bose metal, to a charge ordering insulator and an inhomogeneous Bose-superfluid. Optimal conditions for disproportionation driven high-T(c) superconductivity are shown to be realized only for several Jahn-Teller d(n) configurations that permit the formation of well defined local composite bosons. These are the high-spin d(4), low-spin d(7), and d(9) configurations given the octahedral crystal field, and the d(1), high-spin d(6) configurations given the tetrahedral crystal field.

Simple, rapid and fully automated methods for the manual and automated spectrophotometric determination of epinephrine have been developed by using schemes of stepwise injection (SWIA) and sequential injection analysis (SIA) implemented in the same manifold. The determination is based on the formation of reduced form of 18-molybdodiphosphate heteropoly anion by its reaction with epinephrine. Using of the reaction vessel in the general SWIA configuration instead of a holding and reaction coil in the SIA manifold provides several essential advantages, including higher sensitivity and lower reagent consumption.

In hyperbaric oxygen (HBO(2)) at or above 3 atmospheres absolute (ATA), autonomic pathways link central nervous system (CNS) oxygen toxicity to pulmonary damage, possibly through a paradoxical and poorly characterized relationship between central nitric oxide production and sympathetic outflow. To investigate this possibility, we assessed sympathetic discharges, catecholamine release, cardiopulmonary hemodynamics, and lung damage in rats exposed to oxygen at 5 or 6 ATA. Before HBO(2) exposure, either a selective inhibitor of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS) or a nonselective NOS inhibitor was injected directly into the cerebral ventricles to minimize effects on the lung, heart, and peripheral circulation.
