ERP correlates of attention allocation in mothers processing faces of their children.

This study employed visually evoked event-related potential (ERP) methodology to examine temporal patterns of structural and higher-level face processing in birth and foster/adoptive mothers viewing pictures of their children. Fourteen birth mothers and 14 foster/adoptive mothers engaged in a computerized task in which they viewed facial pictures of their own children, and of familiar and unfamiliar children and adults. All mothers, regardless of type, showed ERP patterns suggestive of increased attention allocation to their own children's faces compared to other child and adult faces beginning as early as 100-150 ms after stimulus onset and lasting for several hundred milliseconds.

Impact of arsenic on nucleotide excision repair: XPC function, protein level, and gene expression.

The ubiquitous occurrence of the human carcinogen arsenic results in multiple exposure possibilities to humans. The human diet, especially drinking water, is the primary source of inorganic arsenic intake in the general population. The ingested arsenic is metabolized to methylated derivatives; some of these metabolites are today considered to be more toxic than the inorganic species.

Optimization of immunoprecipitation-western blot analysis in detecting GW182-associated components of GW/P bodies.

Characterizing the components of GW/processing bodies is key to elucidating RNA interference and messenger RNA processing pathways. This protocol addresses challenges in isolating a low-abundance protein GW182 and GW body (GWB)-associated proteins by building on previous reports that used polyclonal sera containing autoantibodies to GW/P body components. This protocol uses commercially available monoclonal antibodies to GW182 that are covalently coupled to Protein A or G sepharose beads and then used to immunoprecipitate GW182 and associated proteins from cell extracts.

Chimeric nitrogenase-like enzymes of (bacterio)chlorophyll biosynthesis.

Nitrogenase-like light-independent protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (DPOR) is involved in chlorophyll biosynthesis. Bacteriochlorophyll formation additionally requires the structurally related chlorophyllide oxidoreductase (COR). During catalysis, homodimeric subunit BchL(2) or ChlL(2) of DPOR transfers electrons to the corresponding heterotetrameric catalytic subunit, (BchNB)(2) or (ChlNB)(2).

Subspecialization in radiology and radiation oncology.

Practicing radiologists, radiation oncologists, and trainees were surveyed regarding the current state of subspecialization in practice and in training curricula. The authors present the results of these surveys, establish trends compared with previous survey data, and compare the plans of trainees with current postgraduate practice. Subspecialization is increasing in both radiology and radiation oncology.

The neural consequences of flip-flopping: the feedback-related negativity and salience of reward prediction.

Research suggests that the feedback-related negativity (FRN) is only sensitive to expectancy when the prediction violation is salient. To further examine this issue, we asked participants to guess which of two virtual doors hid 5 cents. Prior to and after making their guess, participants were asked whether or not they expected to win.

Adaptation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to various conditions includes tRNA-dependent formation of alanyl-phosphatidylglycerol.

The opportunistic bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa synthesizes significant amounts of an additional phospholipid, identified as 2' alanyl-phosphatidylglycerol (A-PG), when exposed to acidic growth conditions. At pH 5.3 A-PG contributed up to 6% to the overall lipid content of the bacterium.

Identification of GW182 and its novel isoform TNGW1 as translational repressors in Ago2-mediated silencing.

RNA interference is triggered by small interfering RNA and microRNA, and is a potent mechanism in post-transcriptional regulation for gene expression. GW182 (also known as TNRC6A), an 182-kDa protein encoded by TNRC6A, is important for this process, although details of its function remain unclear. Here, we report a novel 210-kDa isoform of human GW182, provisionally named trinucleotide GW1 (TNGW1) because it contains trinucleotide repeats in its mRNA sequence.

Yellow fever vaccine induces integrated multilineage and polyfunctional immune responses.

Correlates of immune-mediated protection to most viral and cancer vaccines are still unknown. This impedes the development of novel vaccines to incurable diseases such as HIV and cancer. In this study, we have used functional genomics and polychromatic flow cytometry to define the signature of the immune response to the yellow fever (YF) vaccine 17D (YF17D) in a cohort of 40 volunteers followed for up to 1 yr after vaccination.

Protochlorophyllide: a new photosensitizer for the photodynamic inactivation of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

The growing resistance against antibiotics demands the search for alternative treatment strategies. Photodynamic therapy is a promising candidate. The natural intermediate of chlorophyll biosynthesis, protochlorophyllide, was produced, purified and tested as a novel photosensitizer for the inactivation of five model organisms including Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, all responsible for serious clinical infections.

Electrophysiological correlates of decreasing and increasing emotional responses to unpleasant pictures.

We examined event-related brain potential (ERP) modulations during the anticipation and processing of unpleasant pictures under instructions to cognitively decrease and increase negative emotion. Instructions to decrease and increase negative emotion modulated the ERP response to unpleasant pictures in the direction of emotional intensity beginning around 400 ms and lasting several seconds. Decrease, but not increase, instructions also elicited enhanced frontal negativity associated with orienting and preparation prior to unpleasant picture onset.

Interpretation bias in social anxiety as detected by event-related brain potentials.

Little is known about psychophysiological correlates of interpretation bias in social anxiety. To address this issue, the authors measured event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in high and low socially anxious individuals during a task wherein ambiguous scenarios were resolved with either a positive or negative ending. Specifically, the authors examined modulations of the P600, an ERP that peaks approximately 600 ms following stimulus onset and indexes violations of expectancy.

Multipartite symbioses among fungi, mites, nematodes, and the spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis.

The spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis, is an eruptive forest pest of significant economic and ecological importance. D. rufipennis has symbiotic associations with a number of microorganisms, especially the ophiostomatoid fungus Leptographium abietinum.

Comparison of two patient-based outcome measures for shoulder instability after nonoperative treatment.

This study compared the responsiveness and minimal clinically important differences of the Oxford Instability Shoulder Score (OISS) and Shoulder Rating Questionnaire (SRQ). Ninety-three patients referred to physiotherapy with shoulder instability (100 shoulders) completed the questionnaires at the initial appointment and at 1 and 9 months later. A subjective rating of change was also obtained.

Functionally competent eosinophils differentiated ex vivo in high purity from normal mouse bone marrow.

We have devised an ex vivo culture system which generates large numbers of eosinophils at high purity (>90%) from unselected mouse bone marrow progenitors. In response to 4 days of culture with recombinant mouse FLT3-L and recombinant mouse stem cell factor followed by recombinant mouse IL-5 alone thereafter, the resulting bone marrow-derived eosinophils (bmEos) express immunoreactive major basic protein, Siglec F, IL-5R alpha-chain, and transcripts encoding mouse eosinophil peroxidase, CCR3, the IL-3/IL-5/GM-CSF receptor common beta-chain, and the transcription factor GATA-1. BmEos are functionally competent: they undergo chemotaxis toward mouse eotaxin-1 and produce characteristic cytokines, including IFN-gamma, IL-4, MIP-1alpha, and IL-6.

2007 survey of radiologists: practice characteristics, ownership, and affiliation with imaging centers.

The ACR conducts periodic surveys to assess the status of radiologists and their practices. The most recent survey was in 2007. One purpose of the survey was to obtain up-to-date data on top-line parameters on radiologists and their practices.

Chlorophyll and bacteriochlorophyll biosynthesis requires the two-electron reduction of protochlorophyllide a ringDbya protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase to form chlorophyllide a. A light-dependent (light-dependent Pchlide oxidoreductase (LPOR)) and an unrelated dark operative enzyme (dark operative Pchlide oxidoreductase (DPOR)) are known. DPOR plays an important role in chlorophyll biosynthesis of gymnosperms, mosses, ferns, algae, and photosynthetic bacteria in the absence of light.

Core academic competencies for master of public health students: one health department practitioner's perspective.

The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) has developed a comprehensive set of core academic competencies for master of public health (MPH) graduates. The ASPH core MPH competencies delineate fundamental knowledge, attitudes, and skills that every MPH student, regardless of their major field, should possess upon graduation. From a public health agency perspective, this is a promising development.

Serum IgE autoantibodies target keratinocytes in patients with atopic dermatitis.

Previous studies have shown that sera of patients with severe atopic dermatitis (AD) contain IgE specific for self-proteins, supporting the hypothesis of autoreactivity as a pathogenic factor in AD. In this study, we screened a large panel of AD patients (n=192) by western blotting (WB) for IgE reactivity not only against the human epithelial cell line A431 but also against primary keratinocytes (KCs). To investigate autoantigenic cell structures in detail, normal human skin and primary KCs were incubated with sera from both WB-reactive patients and, for control purposes, healthy individuals, and analyzed by immunohistology, confocal laser microscopy, and flow cytometry.

Subnanometer motion of cargoes driven by thermal gradients along carbon nanotubes.

An important issue in nanoelectromechanical systems is developing small electrically driven motors. We report on an artificial nanofabricated motor in which one short carbon nanotube moves relative to another coaxial nanotube. A cargo is attached to an ablated outer wall of a multiwalled carbon nanotube that can rotate and/or translate along the inner nanotube.

Face processing biases in social anxiety: an electrophysiological study.

Studies of information processing biases in social anxiety suggest abnormal processing of negative and positive social stimuli. To further investigate these biases, behavioral performance and event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were measured, while high- and low-socially anxious individuals performed a modified version of the Erikson flanker task comprised of negative and positive facial expressions. While no group differences emerged on behavioral measures, ERP results revealed the presence of a negative face bias in socially anxious subjects as indexed by the parietally maximal attention- and memory-related P3/late positive potential.
