Background: Patients with heart failure (HF) and their family caregivers usually consume similar diets, but there is a lack of evidence about diet quality of patients with HF and their family caregivers.

Objective: The specific aim of this study was to compare diet quality of patients with HF with that of their family caregivers.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 40 patients with HF and their 40 family caregivers completed a VioScreen Food Frequency Questionnaire from which Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI) diet quality scores (consisting of the total HEI score and 12 component scores) were calculated.

Here, we analyzed samples of 137 healthy participants and 142 individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) focusing on the 5-HTTLPR genotype (S/L-carrier) and A/G SNP (rs25531), in relation to childhood maltreatment and empathy traits.

Effects of a Digital Self-care Intervention in Adults with COPD: A Pilot Study.

Self-care improves quality of life, and reduces exacerbations and mortality risk in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The purpose of this report is to describe the development and testing of the feasibility and acceptability of a digital, educational self-care intervention designed to improve self-care ability, adherence, knowledge, somatic symptoms, anxiety, and depressive symptoms.This pilot study was a quasi-experimental, repeated measures design.

Predictors of Adherence to Self-Care in Rural Patients With Heart Failure.

Background: The common reality of not following a recommended course of treatment is a major cause of poor health outcomes in patients with heart failure (HF). The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of adherence to HF self-care recommendations in rural HF patients who received an intervention to promote symptom management and self-care.

Methods: Data from 349 rural HF patients (42% female, 90% Caucasian) randomized to the intervention arms of the study were used.

Central artery aging, including elevated aortic stiffness, central blood pressure (BP), and pulse pressure (PP), is a novel risk factor for the development of age-associated cognitive dysfunction. Individuals with higher educational attainment may develop greater brain pathology prior to the onset of cognitive decline. However, whether education moderates relations between central artery aging and cognitive performance is unknown.

High Dietary Sodium Intake is Associated with Shorter Event-Free Survival in Patients with Heart Failure and Comorbid Diabetes.

The aim was to determine whether 24-hour urine sodium excretion predicted event-free survival of patients with heart failure (HF) and diabetes mellitus (DM). Twenty-four hour urine sodium, as an indicator of dietary sodium, was collected from 107 patients with HF and comorbid DM. Patients were followed for a median period of 337 days to determine time to the first event of either all-cause hospitalization or cardiac-related mortality.

Reduced Attention in Former Smokers with and without COPD.

Background: Attention difficulties are often reported by patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); however, limited research exists using objective tests designed specifically to measure attention in this population. This study aimed to (1) identify specific attention deficits in COPD and (2) determine which demographic/clinical characteristics are associated with reduced attention.

Methods: Eighty-four former smokers (53 COPD, 31 no COPD) completed questionnaires, pulmonary function testing, and the Conner's Continuous Performance Test II (CPT-II).

Schizophrenia patients have a higher probability of altered structural and functional differences between the left and right hemisphere. Schizotypy as its nonclinical manifestation has been related to a higher incidence of non-right-handedness and atypical right-hemispheric language dominance. It has been suggested that genes involved in cilia function might link brain asymmetry and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Objective: To compare ultrasonographic patterns of 2-dimensional perineal ultrasonography in men in the preoperative and postoperative periods after transobturator sling deployment for the treatment of urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy. Radiotherapy and radical prostatectomy are the primary treatments for localized prostate cancer. Studies comparing anatomic changes in men before and after radical prostatectomy based on perineal ultrasonography are scarce in the literature.

Background: Authors of expert guidelines and consensus statements recommend that decisions at the end-of-life (EOL) be discussed before and after implantation of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and include promotion of shared decision-making. The purpose of this study was to describe experiences, attitudes, and knowledge about the ICD at EOL in ICD recipients and to compare experiences, attitudes, and knowledge in ICD recipients with and without heart failure (HF). We further sought to determine factors associated with having discussions about EOL.

This study tested the impact on cognitive function of balanced anesthetic using electroencephalographic (EEG) guidance vs usual anesthesia.

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) have been shown to produce and release a plethora of pro-angiogenetic factors in response to γ-irradiation, partially accounting for their tissue-regenerative capacity. Here, we investigated whether a certain cell subtype of PBMCs is responsible for this effect, and whether the type of cell death affects the pro-angiogenic potential of bioactive molecules released by γ-irradiated PBMCs. PBMCs and PBMC subpopulations, including CD4 and CD8 T cells, B cells, monocytes, and natural killer cells, were isolated and subjected to high-dose γ-irradiation.

Extinction debts and colonization credits of non-forest plants in the European Alps.

Mountain plant species shift their elevational ranges in response to climate change. However, to what degree these shifts lag behind current climate change, and to what extent delayed extinctions and colonizations contribute to these shifts, are under debate. Here, we calculate extinction debt and colonization credit of 135 species from the European Alps by comparing species distribution models with 1576 re-surveyed plots.

The aeroponic rhizosphere microbiome: community dynamics in early succession suggest strong selectional forces.

In the last decade there has been increased interest in the manipulation of rhizosphere microbial communities in soilless systems (hydroponics) through the addition of plant growth promoting microbes (PGPMs) to increase plant nutrition, lower plant stress response, and control pathogens. This method of crop management requires documenting patterns in communities living in plant roots throughout the growing season to inform decisions on timing of application and composition of the supplemental PGPM consortium. As a contribution to this effort, we measured changes in the bacterial community through early succession (first 26 days) in plant root biofilms growing in an indoor commercial aeroponic system where roots were sprayed with a mist of nutrient-amended water.

Procedural memory consolidation is associated with heart rate variability and sleep spindles.

Sleep and memory studies often focus on overnight rather than long-term memory changes, traditionally associating overnight memory change (OMC) with sleep architecture and sleep patterns such as spindles. In addition, (para-)sympathetic innervation has been associated with OMC after a daytime nap using heart rate variability (HRV). In this study we investigated overnight and long-term performance changes for procedural memory and evaluated associations with sleep architecture, spindle activity (SpA) and HRV measures (R-R interval [RRI], standard deviation of R-R intervals [SDNN], as well as spectral power for low [LF] and high frequencies [HF]).
