: Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are a leading cause of pediatric emergency department (PED) visits, especially in children under five. These infections are primarily viral, complicating diagnosis and management. This study assesses the impact of point-of-care (POC) rapid diagnostic tests for respiratory viruses on clinical and economic outcomes in a PED setting.

Congenital Tracheal Stenosis With Complete Cartilage Rings: Proposal of A Multidisciplinary and Tailored Surgical Approach.

Introduction: Congenital Tracheal Stenosis (CTS) with complete cartilaginous rings is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition in paediatric patients. Currently, the most common approach is slide tracheoplasty (ST) with sternotomy under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Intending to make the procedure less invasive and consider the variety of associated conditions, we have tailored the approach to our patients, who were treated by a multidisciplinary airway team.

Neonatal Presentation of Severe Hemophilia A: An Original Case Report and a Literature Review.

: We report the case of a neonate diagnosed with severe hemophilia A (HA) and conduct a literature review of cases of severe HA presenting at the neonatal age to help define the clinical diagnostic findings and existing differences between the sporadic and familial onset of this condition. : A 6-day-old newborn presented with worsening pallor, inappetence, and hyporeactivity for 48 h. The diagnosis was severe hemophilia A (HA), leading to an unfavorable outcome.

Introduction: The ability to objectively measure chronic stress has important implications for research, prevention, and treatment. Cortisol is currently the most used biological marker in the investigation of stress and can be measured via blood, saliva, and urine; however, these methods have disadvantages. The measurement of cortisol in hair is a more recently developed method that quantifies the cumulative production of cortisol over longer periods of time.

Humans are the most versatile tool users among animals. Accordingly, our manual skills evolved alongside the shape of the hand. In the future, further evolution may take place: humans may merge with their tools, and technology may integrate into our biology in a way that blurs the line between the two.

Cerebral autoregulation in pediatric and neonatal intensive care: A scoping review.

Deranged cerebral autoregulation (CA) is associated with worse outcome in adult brain injury. Strategies for monitoring CA and maintaining the brain at its 'best CA status' have been implemented, however, this approach has not yet developed for the paediatric population. This scoping review aims to find up-to-date evidence on CA assessment in children and neonates with a view to identify patient categories in which CA has been measured so far, CA monitoring methods and its relationship with clinical outcome if any.

We studied the role of touch in hand motor control by challenging a fundamental prior assumption-that self-motion of inanimate objects is unlikely upon contact. In a reaching task, participants slid their fingertips across a robotic interface, with their hand hidden from sight.

Inhaled nitric oxide (NO) has been used in pediatric and adult perioperative cardiac intensive care for over three decades. NO is a cellular signaling molecule that induces smooth muscle relaxation in the mammalian vasculature. Inhaled NO has the unique ability to exert its vasodilatory effects in the pulmonary vasculature without any hypotensive side-effects in the systemic circulation.

Purpose: To validate a semiautomated method for segmenting vein of Galen aneurysmal malformations (VGAM) and to assess the relationship between VGAM volume and other angioarchitectural features, cardiological findings, and outcomes.

Methods: In this retrospective study, we selected all subjects with VGAM admitted to the Gaslini Children's Hospital between 2009 and 2022. Clinical data were retrieved from electronic charts.

Parechovirus (HpEV) and Enterovirus (EV) infections in children mostly have a mild course but are particularly fearsome in newborns in whom they may cause aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, and myocarditis. Our study aimed to describe the clinical presentations and peculiarities of CNS infection by HpEV and EV in neonates. This is a single-center retrospective study at Istituto Gaslini, Genoa, Italy.

Clinical Course, Laboratory Findings, and Prognosis of SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Infants up to 90 Days of Age: A Single-Center Experience and a Proposal for a Management Pathway.

Backgrounds: Dehydration is among the most common causes of Pediatric Emergency Department admission; however, no clinical signs, symptoms, or biomarkers have demonstrated sufficient sensitivity, specificity, or reliability to predict dehydration.

Methods: We conducted a prospective, monocentric, observational study at Giannina Gaslini Hospital, a tertiary care pediatric hospital. Our study aimed to compare inferior vena cava ultrasound measurement with volume depletion biomarkers to understand if point-of-care ultrasound could help grade, evaluate, and better manage dehydration in children presenting to the pediatric emergency department.

The increase of bronchiolitis severity in the 2022-2023 season in an Italian tertiary children's hospital: An isolated phenomenon or a warning sign?

Aim: Recent literature has shown epidemiological changes in bronchiolitis with an increased incidence in the post-SARS-CoV-2 pandemic period but reports regarding disease severity are conflicting. We aimed to describe the epidemiology, disease severity, and microbiology of bronchiolitis during the 2022-2023 cold season compared to the previous 5 years.

Methods: This single-center retrospective observational study at IRCCS Gaslini, Italy, included all children aged 0-2 years hospitalized for bronchiolitis from 1 September 2017 to 31 August 2023.

Cerebral autoregulation monitoring using the cerebral oximetry index after neonatal cardiac surgery: A single-center retrospective cohort study.

Objective: To investigate whether cerebral autoregulation is impaired after neonatal cardiac surgery and whether changes in autoregulation metrics are associated with different congenital heart defects or the incidence of postoperative neurologic events.

Methods: This is a retrospective observational study of neonates undergoing monitoring during the first 72 hours after cardiac surgery. Archived data were processed to calculate the cerebral oximetry index (COx) and derived metrics.
