Selected dog's teeth, in vivo, were exposed to carbon dioxide (CO2) laser power densities ranging from 13 to 102 J per cm2. The teeth were extracted 48 h postlasing, fixed with 10% neutral buffered formalin, decalcified with Kristensen's solution, processed, sectioned, stained, and evaluated for pulpal damage. No pulpal damage was observed when compared with nonlased control teeth.

Young women aged 13-18 who were surveyed in a 1986 study of child welfare clients were over 50 percent more likely to have had sexual intercourse than those in a comparison group drawn from a national sample of young women; they were also more than twice as likely to ever have been pregnant. The child welfare teenagers also scored significantly lower than their counterparts on a test of sexuality and birth control knowledge. Among the child welfare clients (half of whom were at home and half of whom were in foster care), the young women living in foster homes were less likely than those living with their own families to have ever had sex voluntarily (33 percent vs.

At least 40 young women have died at the hands of a serial killer in what has been called the Green River Murders. Because most of the victims' remains were severely decomposed with partial or complete skeletonization and little or no personal effects were recovered, forensic odontologic methods played a key role in their identifications. Although numerous methods were used to accumulate leads to the identities of the badly decomposed skeletonized remains, leads generated through traditional investigative methods established the identities in most cases.

To assess the relationship between oral lesions and antibodies to the human immunodeficiency virus, oral examinations of 803 homosexual males were conducted at the time of serologic testing. Nineteen percent were HIV seropositive. Thirty percent of antibody-positive subjects had one or more oral lesion(s), as compared with 7% of antibody-negative subjects (p less than 0.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVS) is a rare occurrence in the hip joint. A 33-year-old female with PVS of the right hip was successfully treated by synovectomy and total hip arthroplasty. The literature includes 64 cases of PVS involving the hip, with an average patient age of 34.

Molecular orbital calculations and 13C and 15N NMR experiments have been performed on the O-methyl oximes of two types of 2-acyl cyclic 1,3-diones. One (III; X = CH2) was based on cyclohexane, and the other (X = O) on pyran. The data indicate that both the cyclohexane and pyran compounds prefer to exist as the oxime, rather than the enamine isomer.

Cucumber seeds were germinated under various combinations of solution volume and seed number with a range of ferulic acid concentrations. At each concentration, radicle growth decreased as the relative amount of ferulic acid available per seed increased from χ (25 seeds/5 ml) to 5χ (5 seeds/5 ml) to 19χ (25 seeds/95 ml). With 2.

Merkel cells are a rare cell type located at or near the basal lamina of oral epithelia and epidermis. They are associated with nerves, and may function as touch receptors. Merkel cells are difficult to identify by routine light microscopy, but have been identified by electron microscopy and specific antibodies.

Representatives of public child-welfare agencies in 48 states were surveyed to determine their states' policies for meeting the sexual development and family planning needs of teenagers served by the agencies. Only nine states have a formal written policy dealing with this area of child welfare, and just two of the states have a comprehensive policy. A handful of states have deliberately avoided addressing the issue.

Characteristics of a mandibular infected cyst are unique, including: the young age of the patient; involvement of a caries-free, vital mandibular molar; buccal periostitis; and radiographic preservation of the continuity of the apical lamina dura. Histologic findings in this case confirmed the diagnosis.

We report observations made on a family in which the children manifested premature exfoliation of the deciduous incisors and canines beginning as early as 1.5 years of age. We observed gingival recession, alveolar bone resorption, tooth loosening and exfoliation without apical root resorption in the absence of clinical signs of inflammation.

A chemically selective procedure for covalent modification of Schiff base-forming binding sites in proteins is demonstrated in vitro. In vivo studies show that the same procedure produces a selective anosmia ("odor blindness") when applied to the olfactory epithelia of experimental animals. Surgical experiments confirm that the sense of smell is specifically affected.

Radiographic, gross, and histologic evidence is provided to demonstrate the development of caries and periodontal disease over a 5-year period in an unerupted tooth. The authors speculate on the pathogenesis of these disease processes.

Changes in rat parotid salivary gland weight and functional parameters were evaluated at 8 to 10 days post irradiation in WR-2721 protected and non-protected animals following exposure to a single 15.3 Gy dose of Cs-137 radiation to the head. Glandular fluid secretory capacity was assessed by maximum flow rate, total volume of saliva and duration of secretion following pilocarpine stimulation.

Sixty patients were studied 180 to 500 days after allogeneic marrow transplantation to determine if late oral abnormalities were associated with the presence of chronic graft-v-host disease (GVHD). Lip and intraoral mucosal surfaces were evaluated for color, keratinization, atrophy, and erythema. Subjective complaints of oral pain and xerostomia were also recorded.
