Background: Women living with HIV (WLWH) are at increased risk of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers. Throughout Europe, there is great heterogeneity among guidelines for screening programmes, access to HPV testing and HPV vaccination. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize available data on screening and prevention measures for HPV-related anogenital cancers in WLWH across the WHO European Region (WER).

Grating Spectrometry and Spatial Heterodyne Fourier Transform Spectrometry: Comparative Noise Analysis for Raman Measurements.

The desire for portable Raman spectrometers is continuously driving the development of novel spectrometer architectures where miniaturisation can be achieved without the penalty of a poorer detection performance. Spatial heterodyne spectrometers are emerging as potential candidates for challenging the dominance of traditional grating spectrometers, thanks to their larger etendue and greater potential for miniaturisation. This paper provides a generic analytical model for estimating and comparing the detection performance of Raman spectrometers based on grating spectrometer and spatial heterodyne spectrometer designs by deriving the analytical expressions for the performance estimator (signal-to-noise ratio, SNR) for both types of spectrometers.

Delusional infestation describes the unshakeable belief that one's skin is infected or infested with an external organism or inanimate material, in the absence of supportive medical evidence. It is one of the most challenging psychodermatological conditions to manage, given the rigidity of patients' physically focused health beliefs, and the competing need to introduce antipsychotic therapy to bring about resolution. This is rendered exponentially more complex when partners or family members are similarly afflicted.

A retrospective review of 12 patients with trichotillomania treated in a psychodermatology service.

Trichotillomania is a condition characterized by the pulling of hair from anywhere on the body and is classified as an obsessive-compulsive and related disorder. Patients with hair disorders are commonly referred to psychodermatology services, and can represent a management challenge. Few publications exist that report outcomes for patients with trichotillomania in real clinical practice.

Assessing the Effectiveness of Engaging Patients and Their Families in the Three-Step Fall Prevention Process Across Modalities of an Evidence-Based Fall Prevention Toolkit: An Implementation Science Study.

Background: Patient falls are a major problem in hospitals. The development of a Patient-Centered Fall Prevention Toolkit, Fall TIPS (Tailoring Interventions for Patient Safety), reduced falls by 25% in acute care hospitals by leveraging health information technology to complete the 3-step fall prevention process-(1) conduct fall risk assessments; (2) develop tailored fall prevention plans with the evidence-based interventions; and (3) consistently implement the plan. We learned that Fall TIPS was most effective when patients and family were engaged in all 3 steps of the fall prevention process.

p38 MAP kinase: essential role in hypoxia-mediated human pulmonary artery fibroblast proliferation.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a disease that results in thickening of the vascular wall. Some of the most prominent changes are seen in the adventitia as a result of fibroblast proliferation and increased extracellular matrix deposition. Previous work from this laboratory using animal models has shown that pulmonary but not systemic artery fibroblasts proliferate to hypoxic exposure and that this response is dependent on activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK).

The genetic basis of high-altitude pulmonary oedema.

High-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) is a potentially fatal condition affecting fit and previously well individuals at altitudes in excess of 3000 m. This article discusses the mechanisms of HAPE, considers the contribution of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction and alterations in sodium transport to the pathological process. It discusses the various biochemical mediators such as nitric oxide (NO), endothelin-1 (ET-1), and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAS) that may be involved and considers possible oxygen-sensing mechanisms involved in hypoxic adaptation such as hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1).

Tissue viability. Post-operative wounds: a nurse-led change in wound dressings.

In an attempt to ascertain whether the type of dressing used in hip replacement surgery can affect the risk of patients haemorrhaging post-operatively, a survey was carried out on a 25-bedded orthopaedic ward. It was found that thinly dressed wounds were more likely to lead to haemorrhage. As a result of this nursing-led initiative, the consultants agreed to use thickly padded dressings and there has since been a reduction in the number of patients haemorrhaging.
