Using shrimp shells and concrete to mitigate leaching for metals from waste rock.

The capability of shrimp shells or construction demolition concrete as amendments to immobilize elements, primarily Pb and Zn, generated from mine waste weathering, was investigated via standard batch leaching test (L/S 10 cm/g, 24 h). The effect of the amendment was tested at waste rock-to-residue ratios 9:1, 9.5:0.

Exploring association between pseudoexfoliation syndrome and ocular aging.

Purpose: Within a population-based follow-up study, to examine the 10-year incidence of pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX), possible risk factors for PEX and its association with ocular aging of the cornea, lens and retina.

Methods: The baseline examination was conducted in 2006 on a random sample of 1,033 adult participants from Kaunas city (Lithuania) population of whom 631 had ophthalmic examination data at attendance of the 10-year follow-up in 2016. Detailed examination of the anterior and posterior segment of the eye was carried out.

Imaging diabetic retinal disease: clinical imaging requirements.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a sight-threatening complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) and it contributes substantially to the burden of disease globally. During the last decades, the development of multiple imaging modalities to evaluate DR, combined with emerging treatment possibilities, has led to the implementation of large-scale screening programmes resulting in improved prevention of vision loss. However, not all patients are able to participate in such programmes and not all are at equal risk of DR development and progression.

Coastline in-situ burning of oil spills in the Arctic. Studies of the environmental impacts on the littoral zone community.

In-situ burning (ISB) has been an oil combat technique studied since the 1950s. However, burning of the oil on the sea surface along the coastline, coastline ISB (cISB), is novel and was tested for the first time in the Arctic along a rocky coast in the summer 2017. A light crude oil was burned and effects of the cISB operation on the littoral zone communities investigated.

 Scaphoid fractures are associated with high rates of late- or nonunion after conservative treatment. Nonunion is reported to occur in approximately 10% of all scaphoid fractures. It is known that the union of scaphoid fractures is affected by factors such as location at proximal pole, tobacco smoking, and the time from injury to treatment.

[Retinal injury after playing with a laser pointer].

In this case report, two boys were admitted to an eye department at a hospital in Denmark. They had been playing with a laser pointer, which had been bought abroad during a holiday. The laser was pointed directly into the eyes of both boys eyes, resulting in small retinal marks afterwards.

Necrotizing fasciitis and meningitis due to Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 9 N: a case report.

Background: Necrotizing fasciitis is a deep infection of the fascia and subcutaneous tissue with a high mortality rate. Meningitis is an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain with a likewise high mortality rate. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most frequent cause of bacterial meningitis and it is an extremely rare cause of necrotizing fasciitis.

[Treatment of mechanically induced nerve injuries].

Peripheral nerve injury can result in significant morbidity. The gold-standard treatment is currently end-to-end suture and is possible by mobilisation of nerve ends in cases with segmental nerve loss up to 1 cm. In cases of defects above 1 cm nerve autograft is the gold-standard treatment.

Is one-stop surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome safe? A retrospective long-term follow-up study in a neurosurgical unit in Copenhagen.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate one-stop surgery (OSS) for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) regarding symptom relief and patient satisfaction. OSS in our setting means only one visit to the hospital for surgery and no hospital appointments for preassessment or follow-up. We hypothesised that relief of symptoms with OSS is comparable with that in non-OSS patients reported in the literature.

Prevalence and risk factors for diabetic retinopathy in 17 152 patients from the island of Funen, Denmark.

Purpose: This study aims to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients enrolled in a large Danish quality-assuring database for diabetes: the Funen Diabetes Database (FDDB).

Methods: All patients with type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 DM (T2DM) diabetes mellitus (DM) were included in a cross-sectional study. The level of DR per patient was determined based on the eye with highest level of DR.

Acceptable results after venous reconstructive surgery following iatrogenic injuries to the iliofemoral vein segment.

Introduction: Venous reconstructions after iatrogenic injuries are rarely performed and are associated with a relatively high risk of complications. We present our experiences with venous reconstructive surgery to the iliofemoral vein segment.

Material And Methods: We reviewed ten patients with venous injuries evaluating clinical characteristics, operative and postoperative data including location and type of venous injury, operative repair and outcome.

The potential of willow for remediation of heavy metal polluted calcareous urban soils.

Growth performance and heavy metal uptake by willow (Salix viminalis) from strongly and moderately polluted calcareous soils were investigated in field and growth chamber trials to assess the suitability of willow for phytoremediation. Field uptakes were 2-10 times higher than growth chamber uptakes. Despite high concentrations of cadmium (>/=80 mg/kg) and zinc (>/=3000 mg/kg) in leaves of willow grown on strongly polluted soil with up to 18 mgCd/kg, 1400 mgCu/kg, 500 mgPb/kg and 3300 mgZn/kg, it is unsuited on strongly polluted soils because of poor growth.
