Most Atlantic salmon mariculture operations use open sea cages for the grow out phase. The ultimate fate and effects of the effluents and the possibilities of disease transfer between fish farms are major concerns for farmers, governance and the general public alike. Numerical model systems applied to studying and managing effluents and disease transfer in mariculture must realistically resolve the hydrodynamics in the vicinity of the fish farms.

Article Synopsis
  • A mathematical model was developed to predict the growth performance of Atlantic salmon in aquaculture, considering factors like fish behavior, feed distribution, and water conditions.
  • The model was validated through a field experiment with 360,000 salmon over six months, but growth predictions were impacted by an outbreak of Pancreas Disease, leading to overestimation during the disease period.
  • The study highlights the model's potential for improving commercial salmon production predictions and suggests it could aid in early disease outbreak detection, as indicated by discrepancies between predicted and actual growth rates during the PD outbreak.
